Chapter 898: You’re Quite Interesting
Chapter 898: You’re Quite Interesting
The man with the dreadlocks just glanced at Brother Qian. Seeing that Xu Ke did not object, he could only bite his teeth, lie back on the ground, and then roll out circle by circle, while the man standing in the corner quickly took the opportunity when no one noticed him to lead his friend out of the room.
He thought his actions were discreet and that no one noticed, but dragging one big man with another, with such volume and noise, it’s impossible for others, who are neither blind nor deaf, to be unaware of his petty act. They simply chose not to act against him upon seeing that he was tactful and willing to show submission.
Once the three of them were completely out of the room and the door was closed again, the atmosphere inside the booth warmed up again. But this time, the ladies did not dare to sneak peeks at Xu Ke’s face, nor even dared to glance in his direction. They hadn’t forgotten what had just happened.
Xu Ke, undeniably handsome, was equally known for his ruthlessness.
No one present was a fool. They keenly observed the change in the ladies’ attitude towards Xu Ke. Brother Qian even unabashedly stared into Xu Ke’s face, trying to gauge his reaction, only to find that Xu Ke’s face showed no unnecessary changes, as if he hadn’t noticed the fear and avoidance from the ladies.
"The people around you are quite interesting," Brother Qian said to Brother Zhao, looking at Xu Ke.
"Really? Not bad, I suppose." Brother Zhao noticed Brother Qian’s gaze at Xu Ke, full of interest, greed, and desire, and was instantly reminded of earlier rumors. However, Brother Qian had always behaved no differently from ordinary people while trading with him, so he hadn’t paid those rumors much attention. But now, seeing Brother Qian’s gaze on Xu Ke, perhaps those rumors weren’t entirely baseless.
Although Brother Zhao’s heart skipped a beat, his facial expression remained unchanged from before, though under scrutiny, one could see how stiff his expression really was.
Indeed, he had previously wanted to kill Xu Ke, feeling that Xu Ke was an eyesore obstructing his position. In the past, upon realizing Brother Qian’s intentions, he might have given Xu Ke a push from behind. But Xu Ke had saved his life on the mountain earlier, and just for that, he couldn’t do something so unscrupulous as giving a push.
People in the underworld value the code of honor, and if he forsakes that, could he continue mingling in the underworld? If others found out, would he still have any prestige left? Most importantly, he couldn’t get past the hurdle in his own heart.
While he was contemplating how to dissuade Brother Qian from his interest in Xu Ke, Brother Qian had already given up on trying to talk to him, directly sitting beside Xu Ke, placing a hand on the back of Xu Ke’s sofa, as if to draw Xu Ke into his embrace, a posture full of aggression.
"You seem quite interesting to me, but your heart is too soft. In my opinion, you shouldn’t have let those three go. Even if you don’t kill them, you should at least cripple their hands and feet to ensure they don’t talk outside. But you’re new to this line of business, so being soft-hearted is normal. Just don’t do it again next time." Brother Qian’s eyes lingered on Xu Ke’s face as he spoke.
Xu Ke, hearing these words, already knew that the three he had just let go wouldn’t have a good end. However, he felt no regrets. Xu Ke always acted without betraying his conscience.
He had just shown mercy; it was their bad luck to intrude today and to be provocative here. It could only be said that today they dug their own graves. They were like a breeze that swept through Xu Ke’s heart, leaving no trace.
Seeing Xu Ke merely nod without pleading, Brother Qian became even more interested in Xu Ke. It had been a long time since he found someone this intriguing.
"Why aren’t you pleading for them?"
"Didn’t you just tell me not to be soft-hearted?" Xu Ke retorted, raising an eyebrow.
Brother Qian hadn’t expected that response from Xu Ke, momentarily taken aback, his scholarly face displaying a rare moment of dumbfoundedness, almost like a bookworm.
After challenging his words, Xu Ke watched Brother Qian’s expression, then casually sipped his drink while listening to the exchange between Brother Zhao and Brother Qian’s men, feeling not the least bit bored.
"You are indeed an interesting person. It’s been ages since I’ve met someone as interesting as you." Brother Qian’s moment of stupefaction lasted only seconds before he regained composure.
"This is the third time you’ve said I’m interesting. Does it have any special meaning?" Xu Ke said, looking at the wine glass refilled by Brother Qian.
"Not really. If I had to say, I’m quite interested in having you by my side. Want to join me?" Brother Qian’s hand traced from Xu Ke’s wrist up to his shoulder, circling twice before withdrawing. Out of Xu Ke’s sight, Brother Qian’s fingers absentmindedly rubbed together, his eyes narrowing as if savoring something, though his expression was unsated.
"I can’t betray one person while having an eye on someone else’s bowl." Xu Ke smiled, gently declining Brother Qian.
"Why not? What you get with him is limited, but with me, it’s different. I can offer you everything he can, and more. I also admire you, so you won’t lose out by following me." Brother Qian continued his persuasion.
"Maybe I’m just stubborn. Though tempting, I value relationships more. You might offer better conditions, but it was Brother Zhao who brought me into this line of work, and we’ve shared life-and-death moments together. He’s my mentor, and I can’t be ungrateful like that." Xu Ke refused once more.
Surprisingly, Brother Qian didn’t get angry at Xu Ke’s rejection. Instead, his smile deepened. "Conscience, huh," he remarked, then cheerfully looked at Xu Ke. "I usually dislike being refused; if someone else had refused me here today, they’d be long gone. But strangely, you didn’t make me angry at all. Isn’t that odd?"
"I appreciate your kindness." Xu Ke raised his glass to Brother Qian, interrupting the rest of what he might have said.
