Supreme Heir Son-in-law

Chapter 817: Shirking Responsibility

Chapter 817: Shirking Responsibility

The person on the other end of the phone heard the busy tone coming from the call, and their expression changed, first with disbelief, followed by anger and coldness in their eyes.

"Who does he think he is? Sooner or later, his time will come." The person holding the phone abruptly threw it aside, stewing in their own anger.

In the Wei Family, Wei Lai hadn’t expected that he was just asking for a small favor, and yet the other party actually refused him, causing him to lose face in front of his wife and children. This made Wei Lai hold even more of a grudge against Xu Ke, along with the colleague he had reached out to earlier.

Wei Mother, seeing her husband being refused, felt that the other party was ungrateful, completely unaware that her approach when asking for favors was problematic. Perhaps the notion that others should naturally help them had been completely ingrained in their minds.

The master, who had been staying by the side long enough, had seen enough of the situation. The following events were probably beyond his ability to witness, so he decided to take his leave.

Honestly, before the master spoke up, no one in the room noticed that there was even such a person there. Even Wei Mother, who had brought him back, had forgotten about him until the master suddenly spoke out, reminding them of the situation.

"I’m sorry, Master, something unexpected happened at home, letting you make a wasted trip. Consider this money my apology, and please don’t mind it." Wei Mother said as she took out a card from her purse and stuffed it into the master’s hand. The master didn’t refuse, said a few words, and then left, returning to his place under the escort of a driver arranged by Wei Mother.

"Why bring a master home? What’s going on at home? What needs to be looked at?" Wei Lai asked after the master left.

"It’s not for the house; it’s for our son. I think our son has been cursed by that little vixen from the Xu Family, so I invited the master to take a look. But today, the house was messed up by that Xu, and nothing could be done." Wei Mother complained discontentedly.

Upon hearing Wei Mother’s words, Wei Lai frowned, realizing the seriousness of the problem. His sharp eyes fixed intently on his son, wanting to discern something from Wei Ji’s face. However, with his face already beaten to a pulp by Xu Ke, it was difficult enough to recognize features, let alone see anything more.

"Take him to see tomorrow, make sure to have a thorough look. If the Xu Family really did something to my son, I definitely won’t let them get away with it." Wei Lai said with a harsh tone.

The next day, Wei Mother indeed took Wei Ji to the master’s place, but regrettably, with his face beaten into a pulp, even the master could not see anything. He could only suggest they first go back and come again after the facial injuries had healed somewhat; otherwise, it would be a wasted trip, and he couldn’t provide any help.

Wei Mother was somewhat regretful after hearing the master’s words, but for now, had no other choice.

"I’ll come another day then, and by then, our son will be entirely relying on the master." Wei Mother said.

"It’s only a small matter, not worth mentioning." Perhaps it was due to witnessing the Wei family’s intense demeanor, but the master’s gaze towards Wei Mother and son became much more gentle compared to before. After sending the two of them off, the master finally breathed a sigh of relief and even considered whether he should move; he really didn’t want to interact with the Wei family any further, as their changeable nature was simply too rapid.

On the other hand, with his colleagues unwilling to help deal with Xu Ke, Wei Lai decided to take matters into his own hands. He was determined to give him a good lesson, to the point of bringing him to ruin and breaking the limbs of his entire family, as a way to make amends to his wife and children, Wei Lai thought expressionlessly.

But while the idea was easy enough, execution proved difficult. He assumed that handling Xu Ke, a mere businessman, would be simple, and once he called for help, countless people would be eager to assist. Yet, he had not anticipated that although many were willing to aid him, as soon as they heard he intended to target the Xu Family, they immediately backed off, one after another.

"You claimed to want to be on good terms with me, yet you refuse to help with such a trivial matter. Is this how you show sincerity in wanting to become friends?" Wei Lai said, his face darkened, as he looked at the person before him.

The man sitting across from Wei Lai awkwardly lit a cigarette and began to explain, "It’s not that I don’t want to help you, but the person you’ve chosen is beyond my reach." The man said with a bitter smile as he took a puff.

"My abilities are insignificant when compared with the Xu Family, at most causing them a minor, ant-sized inconvenience. But even this minor inconvenience could spell doom for me. The new Family Head of the Xu Family is notorious for his bad temper. If he finds out I’ve been targeting him from behind, he would metaphorically skin me alive." The man said with a look of fear.

Regardless of what the man said, Wei Lai simply didn’t believe him, convinced that the man simply did not want to help and was just finding excuses. Xu Ke was merely a young man just a few years older than his son. No matter how mighty he seemed, how could he possibly swallow them whole?

"If you don’t want to do it, don’t do it. There’s no need to lie. Even without you, there are plenty others willing to do it for me. By offering you this chance, I’m doing you a favor, so stop disrespecting me." Wei Lai said with a cold smile, seeing the man repeatedly evade his requests.

The man, who initially intended to persuade Wei Lai, saw this attitude and swallowed his words. Before coming into contact with Wei Lai, he thought this person had a promising career and appeared commendable from afar. Yet, upon close contact, the illusion was shattered entirely. The man even couldn’t help but wonder whether it was truly wise to align himself with someone like Wei Lai.

The man had already crossed Wei Lai off his list of potential allies, but he didn’t immediately leave. No matter what, the two had become partners and not enemies. So, in the face of Wei Lai’s aggressive demeanor, the man remained silent until Wei Lai finally vented all his grievances and left. Only then did the man place down the chopsticks he had been holding.

Putting the chopsticks on the table, he realized that the place he had pinched them had completely splintered.

"And here I thought he was a dragon, but it turns out he doesn’t even qualify as a flood dragon; he’s nothing more than a lizard. Getting to where he is must have been the result of sheer luck, and attempting to go further seems impossible." The man said as he wiped his hand with a handkerchief, looking towards the door with a gaze full of mockery.
