Supreme Heir Son-in-law

Chapter 816: Wei Lai

Chapter 816: Wei Lai

Wei Ji’s steps, which intended to leave, stopped right there.

Even though Wei Lai was displeased by the mess all around, he still found a relatively clean corner and sat down.

"You two are really strange. I’ve been back for so long, yet neither of you turns to look at me. You both just turn your heads away, showing me your backs. Do you not want to see me in this house anymore?" Wei Lai’s gaze wandered between his wife and son.

"It’s not like I deliberately didn’t accompany you. You both know the nature of our work. It was pure luck that I could come back early today, but you don’t cherish the time we spend together. You just turn your heads away, giving me a view of the back of your heads as a protest, even turning the house into this mess. Are you trying to get my attention?"

Wei Lai slowly voiced his innermost suspicion, and even the usually stern corners of his mouth curled up inadvertently, his eyes gleaming with a sly satisfaction like that of a yellow weasel that had stolen a chicken.

However, Wei Lai’s good mood didn’t last long. When Wei’s mother and Wei Ji turned their heads one after another, the smile on his face froze, replaced by an endless fury.

"What happened to your faces? Who did this to you?" Seeing his wife and son inexplicably beaten and injured, how could Wei Lai not be furious? Especially when his career was going smoothly, such an incident was like a bucket of cold water poured over his head.

Originally strong and assertive, Wei’s mother’s expression softened instantly, the speed of which was truly astonishing. Even the master sitting on the side, trying to lower his presence, couldn’t help but click his tongue, marveling that the wealthy were indeed different, and he still had much to learn about changing faces.

"It was that Xu Family who did it. They bullied us mother and son by banding together with their wealth, and they even came to our door to beat us. Look at the mess they made of our home." Wei’s mother said tearfully, covering her face.

Initially, her marriage to Wei Lai was based on interests, but over time, they genuinely fell in love, their relationship harmonious and unchanged for decades. Seeing his wife treated this way, how could Wei Lai not be angry?

"Which Xu Family?" Wei Lai asked with a dark face.

"How many Xu Families could there be in Shangjing? Of course, it’s that one." Wei’s mother sat next to Wei Lai, resting her head gently on his shoulder and spoke with grievance, knowing this always broke him.

Although Wei Lai was in politics, he had heard a bit about the Xu Family, so his brows furrowed. "Why would they come over without reason to bully you two?"

"What do you mean by that? Are you saying I’m lying to you?" Hearing Wei Lai’s question, Wei’s mother immediately withdrew herself from him and gave his shoulder a hard push.

"I don’t mean that. I just want to know why they came to hit you. It’s unlikely they’d go mad and destroy our home for no reason, right?" Wei Lai looked helplessly at his wife, who was starting her tantrum again.

"How do you know they didn’t come without reason? Do you not know ’the kind are bullied’? Because of your good nature, we mother and son have been bullied to our door. Why did I marry you back then? Now, after suffering such a grievance, I can only swallow it down." Wei’s mother started crying as she spoke.

"Alright, alright, don’t cry. I’m just asking. I’ll definitely stand up for you, okay? I’ll make them come apologize to you, okay?" Wei Lai couldn’t bear his wife’s tears. Seeing her resort to her crying tactic once again, he immediately surrendered, agreeing to the request and signing a few unequal treaties to pacify her.

In fact, Wei Lai wasn’t necessarily trying to figure out the exact reason for the incident. He just had a habit of doing so, hence the subconscious questioning. Even if it turned out that his wife and son were at fault, he would still choose to confront Xu Ke about it because of their current plight, to vent for them.

Essentially, he was no different from Wei’s mother and Wei Ji, having little regard for merchants. Although Xu Ke was wealthy, in his eyes, he was still a lower-class person adorned in gold and silver, insignificant compared to his wife and son. If striking at the Xu Family could please his wife and son, why not do it?

Wei Lai never considered that he might not be able to handle the Xu Family. He’s used to smooth sailing and saw it as merely dealing with a lowly businessman, just a matter of a word. Therefore, in front of his wife and son, he called a colleague, exchanged some pleasantries, and stated his request.

"What?" The person on the other end thought they had misheard and asked.

"I said I want to make a move against the Xu Family. I find them getting too arrogant lately, even attacking my family. If I don’t vent this anger, where will my face go? Can’t you help me with this little favor?" Wei Lai said, holding his wife’s hand.

"They attacked your family? That’s strange. Xu Ke doesn’t seem like someone who’d do such a thing for no reason. Is there some misunderstanding between you?" The person on the other end suggested.

"What’s there to misunderstand? Our living room is still a wreck, and my wife and son are still injured. Are you going to help me with this or not?" Hearing his colleague questioning his words instead of immediately offering help reduced Wei Lai’s impression of them by more than a notch. If it weren’t for needing their help, Wei Lai would have hung up the phone without hesitation.

"It’s not that I don’t want to help, but the Xu Family, having grown to its current size, is no longer just any small businessman. They have their own influence above. Even if I wanted to help you, Xu Ke isn’t someone I can just mess with, and it might even end up in a lose-lose situation. If possible, I still suggest you resolve this privately." The person on the phone was clearly reluctant to get involved, making Wei Lai’s expression unpleasant.

"Spare me the speech; you just don’t want to help, do you? I thought we had a good relationship, but didn’t expect you wouldn’t even help with this small matter. I misjudged you before. Let’s just pretend I didn’t call today. Goodbye." Before his words were finished, Wei Lai hung up the phone, giving the person on the other end no chance to react.
