"Really disappointing." As he thought about his hard work here while his prey had already fallen asleep, Claude didn’t look too pleased.
Xu Ke glanced at Claude and said, "It’s more convenient for us when they’re unconscious. Otherwise, if they struggle, they might damage the integrity of this skin." As Xu Ke spoke, he picked up the tools again, carefully handling the edges.
Hearing Xu Ke’s words, Claude’s dissatisfaction eased significantly. He began mimicking Xu Ke, carefully handling the piece of skin in front of him. Perhaps it was some innate talent, but surprisingly, Claude did a decent job for his first time skinning. A complete piece of skin was cut out, though it was a bit thicker compared to Xu Ke’s paper-thin cut, which caused Claude to click his tongue in slight discontent.
"It’s already great for your first attempt. With more practice, making cuts like mine is just a matter of time." Although Claude said nothing, Xu Ke seemed to know what he was thinking.
Hearing Xu Ke’s reassurance, Claude’s expression improved considerably. However, his eyes glinted ominously as he looked at Carmen. Nonetheless, for some reason, Claude managed to suppress his urge to test his skills on Carmen and didn’t raise his knife against her.
Claude licked his sharp teeth, his gaze towards Carmen tinged with regret and a sense of loss.
"What a pity, I was quite keen to peel off their skins to see what differences there might be," Claude said with a heavy sense of regret in his voice.
"What’s there to regret? You can always experiment with other interesting procedures on her," Xu Ke said, raising an eyebrow at Claude.
Claude wasn’t angry at having his thoughts laid bare by Xu Ke. Instead, he felt a surge of happiness in his heart, deeply appreciating Xu Ke’s understanding without showing any negative emotions. He even couldn’t help but want to pat himself on the back for making this choice.
While Claude and Xu Ke were having a pleasant lesson, on the other side, tensions at the Calvin family were reaching their peak.
Originally, it was just three children encountering accidents one after the other. Now, even the mother was missing, and none of the neighbors noticed that these three people were in any sort of trouble. Naturally, no one knew when they disappeared, and there were no clues on where to find them.
"How’s the investigation I asked you to do?" Bart asked his longtime butler and partner in a tone as if laced with explosives, ready to ignite.
Understanding Bart’s current mood, the butler didn’t take offense at his attitude. "Young master Claude has been staying at the manor and hasn’t been seen coming out, nor have any unusual people been seen entering or leaving. We might have misunderstood him," the butler replied.
"If not Claude, then who else? Who else would have such immense hatred toward all three of them?" Bart trusted his butler not to betray him. Since the butler suggested it might not be Claude, after repeated verification, Bart was left wondering who else could have committed such acts.
While Bart racked his brain, trying to identify the mastermind, the butler decided to show Bart what he had found, after some deliberation.
As the butler handed over a manila envelope, a look of confusion appeared on Bart’s face. "What’s this?" Although puzzled, Bart still accepted the envelope, asking the question as he opened it.
"I didn’t uncover who’s behind the attacks, but I found some other things. I suspect they are related to the incident and believe it might have been a group effort. After all, it’s not typically easy for one person to do something like this unnoticed," the butler explained calmly.
As Bart listened to the butler’s analysis and sifted through the documents inside the envelope, he became wide-eyed with shock at the horrifying crimes the three had committed. The expression he always maintained was now completely unrestrained, and the thin pages felt as heavy and dangerous as a hot potato in his hands.
"Them! Them." Bart, hands trembling, couldn’t even bring himself to pick up the papers that had slipped to the floor. The thin sheets felt like an atomic bomb had just been dropped in his home.
Seeing Bart’s disbelief, the butler nodded. "Just like you see there, given time constraints, I found only this much. If there were more time, I could find out more," the butler said with a furrowed brow.
"No need for more, this is enough. I now understand why none of my other children suffered any mishaps. It was just these three," Bart, who once thought they were good, honest children, now felt humiliated beyond repair. "With the heinous things these three committed, they deserve what happened. This settles the matter; no need to pursue it further."
"And their mother?" the butler hesitated before asking.
"It’s a miracle I’m not holding them accountable after they raised my children to be like this, let alone going after her. It’s a dream for them. With such disgraceful acts by her children, perhaps they fled fearing exposure, ruining these ’good’ children they’ve raised," Bart mused, filling in the blanks with his assumptions, convinced they were right.
"This matter ends here. From now on, these three and their mothers have nothing to do with the Calvin family. Understood?" Bart looked at his butler for confirmation.
The butler nodded, fully understanding Bart’s instructions that, regardless of previous ties, these individuals no longer had any connection to the Calvin family.
The butler lingered in the room for a bit longer, seeing that Bart had no further orders and was brooding over the three pages. Quietly, he left to sever any ties the Calvin family had with the three individuals.
Claude always paid close attention to all matters related to the Calvin family. If he weren’t worried about the butler uncovering too much too soon and raising suspicion, Claude would have handed over the full extent of their crimes.
