Chapter 201: Elaborate Plans
Chapter 201: Elaborate Plans
Everything about the book looked ordinary and nothing should have caught my attention; however, something about the cursive golden letters on the cover of the book looked strangely familiar.
It can’t be...
I opened the book to its first page as I felt my hands shaking slightly. Although I wasn’t sure what I was expecting to see, I knew from the way that my heart hammered loudly in my chest that I was expecting something either meaningful or unusual. My throat felt constricted as I stared at the neat yet elaborate cursive handwritten message on the dedication page of the book.
‘In remembrance of the games we used to play together all night long...’
I gasped in shock as I dropped the book from my hands as if it had suddenly caught on fire. That was just how shocked I was at what I had just read. Bella let out a small cry as she bent down to retrieve the book that I had dropped.
No one must see this...
“No, don’t! I mean...I’ll get it myself...thank you...” I quickly called out to stop her.
Bella gave me a confused look as she watched me swiftly bend down to pick up the book that I had just dropped. If she found my behavior suspicious, she did not voice it. All she did was give me a look of concern to which I answered silently with a smile. I pressed the hardcover book tightly against my chest as if it would somehow help calm the rapid beating of my heart.
“Shall I get you tea and some refreshments?” Bella offered before showing me a bright smile.
“Sure. Please set it up inside...” I murmured almost absentmindedly.
I must have stood there for a while even after Bella had left to make preparations for tea. Holding the book against my chest filled me with a mix of calmness and insecurity. It was a strange mix of feeling that I didn’t know what to make of it. I was glad to be left alone to gather my thoughts as well as figure out what I should do with the book.
Flipping through the other pages of the book confirmed my suspicion that the book was nothing out of the ordinary. It was a decently famous romance novel that was popular a few years ago. I wasn’t particularly into these kinds of books and neither was I a fan of the author or any of her works. In summary, there was no good reason why this book should have been sent to me. My eyes narrowed before I let out a low laugh when I realized that this was nothing more than an elaborate and roundabout way of delivering a message.
‘In remembrance of the games we used to play together all night long...’
Seriously, what do you want from me now after all this time?
There’s only one person who would send me a note saying something like this...
“Ah...this really saves me the trouble...” I muttered to myself before letting out a scoff.
Finally, it felt like the wheels of fate had resumed turning.
...
“Master Bradon is back and wants to have dinner with you in the garden today,” Bella informed me with a slightly worried look on her face.
“It’s still light out...” I murmured as I glanced out of the window.
Why is he back so early?
It wasn’t like I didn’t have a clue as to why he had come home early from work. Having dinner earlier in the garden meant that we could enjoy the view of the garden and the flowers while there was still daylight.
If only that was all that he had in mind...
“Do you want to get changed?” Bella suggested with a small smile.
“Sure. A very short dress would be great...” I instructed passively.
“Diana...” Bella murmured with clear worry in her tone.
I turned and showed her a defiant smile. She knew what was about to happen just as well as I did. Bella looked anxious and I started to pity her and the fact that she had to be caught up in these abnormal occurrences.
“What about a short pink dress that is the same color as the blooming roses in the garden?” I suggested cheerfully.
“Are you really fine with this?” she asked timidly.
I knew that she wasn’t referring to my choice of outfit for my dinner date with Bradon. Bella probably thought that my relationship with Bradon had hit some kind of rotten bottom; however, I beg to differ in my opinion.
“Of course. He’s my husband and I’m supposed to be his good wife,” I replied confidently.
Bella’s wide-eyed expression clearly displayed her shock.
“We’re probably very close in age so I might not be in a position to lecture you like this but...I want you to remember that everything happens for a reason and there are always some kind of motive or explanation behind people’s actions,” I said before smiling her way.
“What do you mean?” she asked while looking even more confused than before.
“Well, if I had to put it simply then...I’m not sleeping with him for free,” I said with a shrug of my shoulders.
“Diana...” she exclaimed before she began blushing wildly.
Well, she was the one that asked...
“It’s going to be fine. Don’t worry about me,” I said confidently.
I wasn’t in such a despicable and helpless situation that I would need pity from her or anyone else. It was also true that I had been willingly doing everything that Bradon wanted me to without resistance because there was something that I wanted. As time passed, I began to understand him a little more and I was sure that I was close to figuring out why he was so against the plan that I had formulated.
...
Bradon was already seated at the dining table that had been set up for us in the middle of a decently large white gazebo structure. The pink roses that bloomed on vines surrounding the gazebo were almost the exact color as the dress that Bella had chosen for me.
