Chapter 99: Eyes on you

Chapter 99: Eyes on you

The whole trip was cancelled and the students were taken back to the main city...and some to the hospital.

Kyle heard from Amanda that those who had somehow witnessed the chaos and gotten a glimpse of the other side had their memories erased of the night. Once they woke up, they would feel that the night never existed.

That’s the way PSC and the government keep a tight lid on the supernatural side of reality hidden from the masses.

"It feels weird," he muttered, looking around the bus. There were only a few people inside the bus now, unlike how crowded the vehicle was when they came here.

Reason? The drug or whatever Clara used on those people needed them to rest for at least two days to recover.

They weren’t injured but put into a comma-like state. Their body would function normally but normally, it takes two days for a person to regain their senses.

"Hannah is currently recovering but once she does she will go through a severe trial," Amanda muttered, thinking the same thing as Kyle.

The microchip Hannah carried was banned by PSC a few years back due to the possible nerve damage it could cause on the target. The production has been axed after the trial on the matter continued for several weeks.

However, Hannah somehow had a whole batch of it.

"But she used them to save people." Kyle reasoned.

There were more than five hundred people inside the resort and with so much noise and chaos outside, they would have tried to escape. Especially, after discerning that they couldn’t contact anyone.

Amanda sighed, "Kyle...you know when it comes to rules the government and the PSC don’t see what had actually happened but what could have happened. It’s the same in many places."

Kyle nodded in understanding. Right.

Following instincts over rules might save lives but authorities always force their workers to stick with what has been decided to be safe and efficient.

Not something he could fully agree with but who was he to question those rules and the people that make them?

Amanda suddenly leaned her head on his shoulder, her arm wrapped around his, and a smile of contentment curving her lips.

"Regardless of what happened, I am happy that I could sit here with you. No one is around to disturb us." Since that bitch Layena wasn’t around, she doesn’t need to worry about having her throne stolen.

"But, my dear Amanda, we haven’t made up officially until now, have we?" Kyle asked, pretending to be confused while barely suppressing a smile.

Amanda looked up at him, her dark raven hair falling over her left eye as she asked, "Are you...still mad at me? I can apologize for what happened and you can ask me whatever you want now."

Kyle sighed and shook his head, "I don’t want your apology nor do I want to dig into our past. Rather, I want utmost honesty if we are moving forward together."

He held her hand, feeling a little bad that his words made her feel this way.

His fingers interwined with hers, sending a jolt running down her spine.

Kissing the back of her delicate hand he added, "Whatever the situation, however messy it might be, please tell me about it honestly, Amanda. I was hurt in the past not because you didn’t appear on our dates or because you started ignoring me. I was most hurt because you started hiding things."

Amanda didn’t say anything. She didn’t explain herself and Kyle didn’t need an explanation either. He understood her situation and whatever she did was for their betterment.

However, from here on, "Let’s be honest and transparent like we once were." Amanda said and Kyle finally smiled with a nod.

He leaned his head and rested it against hers.

Then, in a soft voice, Amanda asked, "By the way, Kyle...what conversation were you having with Layena this morning?"

Kyle froze.

This morning...just before she departed for the hospital, Layena approached Kyle and...

....

"I will have my eyes on you." She said in a stern voice, her eyes unwavering, "I have not spared you."

Kyle sighed, "First of all, thank you for not giving away my identity. And secondly, you know I am not a bad person so you don’t have to bother-"

"Oh, I would be the judge of that." Layena interrupted, stepping closer. Her fingers grabbed his collar and despite their height difference she appeared to be staring straight at him when she said,

"I have risked everything I have earned to this date for you. Don’t even think you can escape me now." And with that, she walked away.

Leaving a stunned Kyle behind.

....

"Nngh ...I hate it. Now, someone else knows about your secret." Amanda complained, thankfully, her voice was low or the few other people in the bus including Ethan surely would have reacted.

Kyle shook his head...if only she knew that the first person to find out about him was not her but Veronica...nope, can’t have that. Sorry, Amanda, but a promise is a promise.

"Well, I hope I don’t come across any other incident any time soon," Kyle muttered, as he felt Amanda playing with his fingers.

She was loving it!

"Yes, yes. You must remain under the radar for some time now." She casually muttered but this matter was anything but casual.

Veronica had made it utterly clear to him how much attention he was going to receive after what he did.

The central government would surely now take notice of him and his case would no longer remain in the hands of officers in the same rank as Amanda and Layena.

Senior officers would get involved, maybe someone working directly under the central authority. And if that happens, Veronica would have the least control over things.

’I need to change my working pattern, and also change locations randomly.’ The more he stays away from his house and more in Fortis, the more difficult it would become to trace him back

Why was he not playing it safe and staying away from the aether world for the time being?

[Host, you have gotten the attention of the Knull.]

[There is a high chance of more rifts to appear around you.]

[It’s better for the host to keep leveling up and earn more points.]

[The host is close to a breakthrough. There is a high chance for the host to unlock his first skill.]

[Please keep challenging rifts and streaming it so that the host can be prepared for the worst.]

Haah...he has gotten the attention from both sides. Should he compliment himself or bash his head?

The system’s suggestion was right but he wasn’t going to hunt the rifts down for at least a few days.

He would take it slow and first try to contact WarHorse. He needed Aleda’s assistance to know more about himself.

He doesn’t want to go berserk with Genesis every single time and cause such a massive show for everyone to witness.

That’s why, his priority was—

"Kyle...hug me."

—Amanda for now.

His big baby needed some pampering. On it.
