Chapter 104: Early morning

Chapter 104: Early morning

"Yeah, I will meet you soon." Saying that, Kyle disconnected the call.

Tossing the phone onto the other side of the bed, he remained seated, eyes wide open, not a trace of sleepiness left.

What he had just heard was enough to wipe it all away.

From what he gathered, the woman coming to hunt him down was known for her anomalous methods of investigation, ones that often leaned toward underhanded ways of uncovering the truth. And once she formed a conviction, she never allowed her prey to roam free.

At the moment, even Veronica did not know what the central authority wanted from Kyle. Whether they intended to recruit him or simply lock him away remained a matter of concern. But regardless of their motive, Kyle had no intention of getting caught.

Not by Ava. Not by anyone.

During their conversation, Kyle had also informed Veronica that there was someone else who knew about his secret.

Veronica had been slightly surprised, as she had her suspicions about their relationship. She had assumed that, like the other two members of the house, Blake did not get along with Kyle and had forced him into confessing.

Kyle assured her that everything was fine and that this was for the better.

"Though I can’t share this information about Ava with Blake..." Kyle knew he couldn’t tell anyone, no matter how much he trusted them when it came to Veronica. Not just because she had asked him to keep it a secret, but also because of how absurd it would sound.

A commanding officer suddenly getting acquainted with a complete nobody, uncovering his secret, and then growing close enough to risk her job to help him.

Yes, this had to remain a secret.

"Haah... this is troublesome." It wasn’t just Ava that troubled him, but the sudden attention he had drawn. Things were bound to turn chaotic.

...

"Amanda, that was reckless of you."

Amanda sighed as she heard her father’s voice from the doorway.

She had just come out of the bath and was about to go to sleep when he arrived.

"Dad... I just don’t like sleeping anywhere unfamiliar."

The man of the house let out a quiet sigh. "But you could have at least informed them. Your seniors worry about you."

Amanda gave a sheepish smile. "I’ll apologize to them tomorrow."

Hades smiled faintly as he approached his daughter.

He tucked her under the covers and rested his hand on her head before speaking, "Rest well. Tomorrow, you have a few people to meet."

Amanda was already too drowsy to catch his words properly and simply hummed in response.

Hades blinked in surprise. "So you... agree, right?"

There was no answer. Amanda had already drifted off into Kyle-land.

Hades slowly withdrew his hand and stepped back.

As he walked out of the room, he turned to his left, where his anxious-looking wife stood waiting.

With a smirk, he raised his thumb.

The woman silently squealed in delight.

Finally, their daughter was ready to move on.

.....

[4:36 AM]

Kyle woke in a daze, the alarm still buzzing beside his pillow.

He scratched his head, then his side, before finally turning toward the clock. Why was he even awake this early when there were no classes?

[Your brother asked you to meet him at 5, host.]

The system screen flickered to life in front of his face.

He narrowed his eyes to read the text, irritation rising in his chest. "Like hell I’ll listen to his orders." Saying that, he dropped back onto the bed and pulled the duvet over himself.

For the next twenty seconds, there was no movement. But just as the second hand crossed the mark, the cocoon began to shift, wriggling slightly.

Thud

The bed was small, so the fall came immediately.

Kyle’s eyes snapped wide open as he stared at the ceiling.

"Guh... why can’t I go back to being a shut-in?" he groaned, slowly pushing himself to his feet before dragging himself to the bathroom.

After splashing water on his face, he took a deep breath.

The last traces of sleep vanished as he looked at himself in the mirror.

Then a thought surfaced. "Do my eyes turn golden when I use God’s Eye?"

[Indeed, host.]

Huh. He hadn’t known that.

Not dwelling on it, he brushed his teeth, took a quick shower, and changed into clothes suited for movement.

Of course, that disciplined idiot would probably make him do some kind of workout, which was almost pointless now that Kyle himself was becoming quite the fitness enthusiast.

[Host, you have missed your streak—]

"Zip it."

He then went ahead and prepared himself a quick energizing drink. A banana, some nuts, and even a slice of bread blended with milk before he downed it in one go.

Yup, it tasted good.

Bzz

Right on time, at exactly five, his phone buzzed.

Kyle picked it up instantly and heard the voice on the other end.

{Come out. I’m waiting.}

Shaking his head, he finished the drink and stepped out of the house.

A familiar black car was parked outside, Blake sitting inside.

Were they supposed to jog in that?

Kyle shook his head, locked the house, and walked up to the car.

"Where are we going?" he asked as he got in, noticing Blake was dressed similarly to him, though his outfit was from a well-known brand.

"Buckle the seat belt first."

Once Kyle did, Blake started the car and drove off.

Kyle didn’t get an answer, nor did he ask again. He was too used to this behavior to bother.

Instead, he pulled out his phone and opened Amanda’s chat.

She had texted him late at night, but he had already fallen asleep by then.

When he opened the image she had sent, he subtly shifted his screen away, making sure Blake didn’t catch a glimpse.

A pink nightdress, paired with that princess hairband, was outright unfair. He wanted to see her like that in person.

But no, she would rather starve him of that sight.

Not long after, the car slowed to a stop in front of a large warehouse.

It stood on the outskirts of Montclair, with railway tracks stretching behind it and no houses in sight.

Kyle had come to this side a few times before, mostly to be alone and sort out his thoughts.

"Come," Blake said, unbuckling his seatbelt and stepping out.

Kyle followed, stepping out of the car as well.

The abandoned warehouse seemed to be their destination, and as Blake walked toward it, Kyle silently trailed behind, his suspicion confirmed.

But instead of pulling out some oversized key for the equally oversized lock, Blake flipped it in his hand with ease and pressed his thumb against a small slot at the back.

A mechanical whir responded instantly, as if a system had recognized him. The lock’s upper half lit up with a small screen.

Blake entered a few numbers, and with a click, the lock came undone.

"3048. Remember the password. I’ve already registered your thumbprint, so you can come here anytime you want." With that, Blake pushed the warehouse door open.

Kyle’s eyes lit up as he looked inside.

This... wasn’t an abandoned warehouse.

This was...

"...a lame ass training center."
