Chapter 75: Take A Gamble
Chapter 75: Take A Gamble
"Now, the last item. What should it be? A scale from a dragon that would make your little slime stronger? Hmmm, no. a done that would enhance the shape and add some deadly spikes? Noooo.
I'm very torn on this. I should just go and look here." Spencer had already forgotten that Clark had been told he could choose.
Following their host, Maria and Clark watched Spencer fiddle with box after box. Many small bones or pieces of scales were pulled out. "I could get you the poisonous tipped tail of a rattle dragon. But those are worthless without the poison. Or the horn of a bull dragon. But you don't need to be slowed down by the heavy bones." The constant mumbling from Spencer was filled with too much knowledge.
"He's like a walking textbook for dragons." Maria was impressed that Clark was able to follow all of this without being as stunned as she was.
"He's an expert collector. I wonder what he did that caused him to get this way." Their conversation was unheard by Spencer who was too absorbed sifting through materials.
"How about this, it's a rare item. I don't even know what kind of dragon it came from. I know it holds the spatial attribute so that should help your slime adjust to any taming space. Absorbing the dragon essence of a space dragon hybrid will be valuable. But it is an unknown." An item that stumped Spencer was something that Calrk felt he should look in to no matter what.
"Spatial dragon vertebrae- Legendary
This piece of bone once resided within the spine of a young spatial dragon. The spatial dragon had the unique ability to alter its body size by storing its body in a subspace. While the spatial dragon was fairly weak, it was able to use the energy of space to hide away from enemies. It was also thought to be able to teleport short distances.
This dragon is rarely seen in the world due to its cowardice.'
Clark felt that the potential addition of spatial energy to Crim was tempting. Almost too tempting. However, he nearly said no because of the fact that it would make it harder for Crim to grow.
'The system greatly encourages the hist to take this material. The slime dragon can benefit from this when used as a growth material.'
The system rarely used the intelligence it had to push Clark in a certain direction. This meant that the material being offered was very good. It also showed Clark that the system was unable to give the entirety of the information.
Part of Clark wasn't sure if this was due to the fact that the system wasn't intelligent enough yet or if the creator of the system was still holding things back for some reason.
"I don't often gamble, but I will try it this time. I have a feeling in my gut that this is the right choice." Clark reached out and stored the small glass case away holding the spatial dragon bone.
"I look forward to being told about your results." Spencer smiled with his bright white teeth. He was getting everything he wanted with this trade. The area that he had wanted to explore was finally going to be open again. He just needed to wait for his letter to be brought to Alexander. "Now, don't let me hold you back.
Take that heart on your way out and feel free to come again another time after my next journey. We may be able to work something else out."
With their business done, Spencer walked them out of the large storage room. Devi had hidden himself again while Spencer's granddaughter was looking at them with curiosity. She hadn't known what they were doing for so long in the back room. However, she was seeing that her grandfather was just as happy, if not happier, than when he received a new item in his collection.
"I will have this to my mentor as soon as I can."
"Thank you for your proposition." Maria and Clark both thanked Spencer while he closed the door to his antique shop.
"I did not expect that to be what he wanted. I think he is being more mysterious because it's fun. It feels like he enjoys that." Clark easily picked up on the trait that Spencer had.
"It was a very worthwhile trip. Thank you for letting me get something." Maria wanted to thank Clark more but couldn't think of anything at the moment.
"Just let me know how it goes when Lit absorbs it. I don't know when the next full moon is but it should be soon. Maybe we should do some nighttime training?" The idea that Clark had was simple. Train in the dark to improve their night time survival. That way they could also gauge when the next full moon would be. They did have the time to do so.
"I would like that. We should go to the academy graveyard. I know it sounds spooky, but it has a lot of spiritual energy that Lit can absorb in the air. Maybe you will find something there too." The suggestion was so simple that Clark had overlooked it.
"I forgot that the academy grounds had a graveyard for the students and staff without a place to go back to when they died. It should have a lot of mixed energies. Even the beasts of many tamers get buried there." This sounded better and better the more that Clark spoke. Maria had already come through with a great idea for them.
"Then we will head back to the academy and sleep early." Clark and Maria did just that. They slowly made their way through the crowds only stopping for a few moments to grab something to snack on.
Once they were crossing the front gate and finding that the same guard was waiting, Clark decided to stop again. "Try to break this soap stone open. I think you will like what the merchant we bought it from hid inside." Clark knew very well that a large earth crystal was inside. The system had seen right through it.
The guard on the other hand found himself very confused. The students seemed to get weirder and weirder every day. Yet, he trusted Clark who had given him an earth crystal already. It was just another way that he was letting a student buy him, but that was what it was. He couldn't turn it down.
"Is that the one you said had the large earth crystal in it?" Maria couldn't help but guess. Clark had explained what was in most of the soap stones by this point.
"Yes, I want to make sure that he will let us out of the academy when we need to. Who knows what might get brought in from the wilds. I hear that the horned rabbit season is picking up. That means plenty of good food." The horned rabbit season was popular around the city because many horned rabbit dens were found in the forest nearby.
Therefore, many of the tamers would go out to hunt them for beast food and large feasts. It was a city wide event.
