Chapter 71: Distracting Market
Chapter 71: Distracting Market
"I am sorry miss, but you don't have permission to leave the academy grounds as a first tear. I do not see a professor's token on your person either." The very same guard that Clark had met before was at the gate watching for students to make their way through. It was already the tenth time stopping someone since the first years had all had exams and received time from their classes.
"I'm sure that your partner over there would be unhappy if you didn't procure him a tasty snack like this. I can share them with you if you can help me go buy materials with my sparring partner." Clark put on his best business voice. He copied the tactics he had seen merchants use.
The earth crystals flashed in his hands while he flicked it up like a coin with his thumb. The earth type beats pretending to be a rock nearly jumped up before the guard gave it a glare. "Bribery is a very rotten habit. But, if someone happened to drop something on the ground and I wasn't able to see…"
This was exactly why Clark had made a point to be polite to the guards he saw. They had started to know him over the last week because he would always go out of his way to say hello and chat with them for a moment. Small talk could get someone miles and miles from where they started.
The ''fallen'' earth crystal was picked up by the guard while Clark walked through the gate pulling Maria away, she wasn't sure how Clark had pulled it off and was about to bombard him with questions before a familiar cat was walking beside them. "You're the doppelganger. How is your tamer doing? Well, I hope he's doing good." Clark resisted petting the doppelganger like he would a cat.
Since Clark recognized this was the gate keeper's tamed beast, he wanted to be sure he said a proper hello as well. The gatekeeper had seemed to be a strong yet kind man. If Clark respected him and his tamed beast he thought that he would get respect back.
The small meow from the doppelganger in cat form made Maria turn slightly red. She thought it was incredibly adorable which just went to show that ignorance was truly bliss. Clark knew that it could transform in to just about anything if given the chance. A truly dangerous opponent to face.
The doppelganger followed them all the way out of the front gate before turning around. Clark had a feeling that when the gatekeeper was resting, that his beast took over the duty of patrolling. Since it let them be, Clark didn't see any issues with keeping on their way and not returning to the academy.
"The place we are heading is called the dragon antique shop. It's apparently a place with dragon based antiques. The man chased me down after I ran around a little bit. I want to see if he has something with death and dragon essence. That way it will be a perfect core for my taming space." This was the plan that Calrk had come up with.
If that failed, he would wander stores that just looked strange in general, there was no telling what weird things showed up in the city.
"As long as we avoid the places owned by the Cain family we will be fine." Maria had the idea that the Cain family would antagonize her. It was even more a possibility since they were up in arms about the young master dying in a wild area under the academy's supervision. Not that this wasn't something they knew to be possible. The academy did not hide this stuff.
"I heard that they tried to send a powerful beast to fight the head master and the head master had to kill it. I can't believe anyone would think they can take on Nova academy." Maria felt she had heard gossip about the world's stupidest family.
"I would definitely not mess with him or any of the professors. They are within their own leagues." Clark remembered professor Brune's lizardman beating goblins with single soft punches. It was a beast to fear. Not to mention that professor Brune was massively strong as well.
The pair moved through the streets finding that it was exceptionally crowded. There were too many merchants around selling things to crowds of people. "I don't know what is going on but it is good for us. There are so many merchants around selling items from other cities. That should give us a better chance to buy something good."
"As long as we don't spend all the money we make. From what you added up my crystals will be worth three gold. Yours will be worth eight! We can buy so many good things with that." Since Maria had been kicked out of her family, she didn't think that she would ever see so much money at once. She barely had a few coppers to her name.
Even the money she had stolen when she left the family was still minimal.
"Come here, come here, try your luck and break open a soap stone. You may crack open a beast egg, or a high grade material. You might even find a fossil!" There was a merchant that had attracted a decent crowd compared to the others. His entire gimmick seemed to just be breaking open the soap stones.
"That sounds like it could be robbery." Maria was right. Clark had never heard of such a business and it sounded like the merchants was trying to rob them of their money.
"Only one silver a try. If you succeed you can announce your glorious luck to the world!" The merchant called out again making Clark want to rush away. However, he decided to let the system take a look first. It was pure curiosity.

"I took a look and noticed a few things about those soap stone rocks. I think we can make some money. Let me head over to the alley over there. I want to change clothes." Maria wasn't sure what Clark was going on about. However, he left Crim with her and told her not to speak to him when he came back. He was going to clear this sneaky merchant out and make them some money.
But he was also going to get the unknown rank item. It was too tempting.
