Chapter 282: Busy Dungeon
Chapter 282: Busy Dungeon
The light jog that professor Wright had them do turned out to be a three hour run. None of them could say they weren't tired after it. Even Clark felt that his limits had been tested while Professor Wright just looked at them wondering how they were so tired.
"In the future, you will all need to increase the amount of time you take to train your endurance. This was a short jog that got us to where we need to be. What will happen if you are running from a dungeon break? Hundreds of beasts chasing you?" Professor Wright spoke as if this was a common occurrence.
The sounds of talking had reached the group's ears before they had managed to calm their heartbeats. The next thing they saw through the tees were multiple clearings with many camps. There were even small shacks and merchant stalls. The thing that stood out the most though were the organized and uniformed tamers standing together.
"This should be your first time seeing military tamers. They are often stationed at the most common, busiest, or largest dungeons for safety. Not only do they monitor the laws here, but they also keep close records of what is going on in the dungeon. This one in particular has a rotating staff over sixty military tamers. It's a potential future position for some of you or those you know."
Hearing that professor Wright expected some people in their first year and even the third year class to go to the military was not unexpected. Many students would join for merit and to become stronger. It was common for people to take a five year period in the city military. Especially during the beast breeding seasons when there were many more deaths from beast migrations.
The tamer military was not an overall strict force. They were set up as a defensive and offensive group that protected the city and reported directly to the city lord. Their main functions had been established to protect the city from the beasts in the wilderness.
However, as time went on, the militaries went on to occupy dungeons so that the city could have a more suitable income. Later merchants became partnered with the city establishing a solid economy for the city they were related with. It was a well balanced fall back that kept the city from sinking too deep in to poverty compared to other cities.
'Iron hide bulldog- uncommon
The iron hide bulldog is a strange beast that is named for its incredibly tough fur. They are not actually a metal type beast but are instead an earth type beast with the ability to harden their fur using earth energies.
They can take a large amount of damage and are fairly resistant to many other attacks of different energies. They work well in groups and often are raised by organized taming teams. They do not have much growth potential but they often fight above their level due to their impressive defense and battle instincts….'
Clark saw that every single uniformed military tamer had the same iron hide bulldog as a beast. This wise decision was why the military was able to work well together. The iron hide bulldog was easy to breed and even though it lacked growth potential, it did well in protecting the people of the city.
The guards in the city often used different beasts since they did not need to be as organized unless under certain circumstances. But any military effort was highly trained to be organized and move as a group. Therefore, the iron hide bulldogs were ideal since they naturally worked together.
"They are watching and having their beasts sniff some of the things leaving the dungeon. Why?" Grace was not as experienced when it came to the dangers of some things leaving the dungeons.
"The items taken from the deeper floors may hold more risk. Some of the older poisons carry scents on them. These poisons are dangerous and can kill entire streams or even a river of beasts. Let alone poison a person." This was an eye opening thing for them. They had not considered that they might come across such dangerous things.
"There are also certain beasts banned in the city and even multiple cities. They have dangerous skills or are considered invasive. That is why they will have beasts trained to sniff out the eggs or even some of the harder to find beasts that might attach to a tamer on their way out of a dungeon."
"Oh, so it's like the tick beasts that are all over the grasslands in the south?" Ralph knew of this well. He had to watch out for them attaching to his boar before it became a molten boar.
"That is exactly correct. The gluttonous tick in the grasslands would attach to a beast and then feed on them. They would grow eggs within themselves and hatch in the hundreds if not found and burned off soon enough. Very dangerous and hard to control without the right measures." it was easy to see that Professor Wright was surprised that Ralph knew of beasts like this.
But she chalked it up to him caring for his beast as any good tamer would.
"Hey, come over here for your field trip. We have freshly hunted-"
"Ignore that old guy. Come by the ores here!"
"Try out a lucky box! These items are random and might contain a rare treasure from the dungeon!"
"Scams. Perfect ways to trick people in to paying too much. Those boxes are always assembled by the merchant then they lie about finding them in an ancient dungeon. The real boxes have a gold pattern along the ridge. They also have a locking mechanism that requires energy to open.
Those lack the proper shape of the mechanism along with the proper gold pattern in the proper locations." Isa showed off her knowledge and shut down every single merchant that tried to scam them.
"If anyone finds a real ancient storage box in a dungeon, especially an ancient dungeon, then they keep it. Even if it contains dirt, that dirt has unique earth energies. Still valuable." this surprised Clark. He had not imagined he could find a valuable treasure like a mystery box in a dungeon. It felt like this was similar to the system.
'The system has a unique feature created by the lord of creation. This is to give you the potential to grow with proper incentives. Items made by races can not possibly compete.'
The system replied to Calrk's internal thought. Clark could only think that the system was naturally better. The black lightning spear was already proof. Not to mention the many other things he had gotten.
To be fair, Clark could say he had gotten many amazing items. But what stood out most were the whaling waters he had gotten. They were common and he had a decent stash. But they kept himself and his closest teammates healing faster than anyone else. This was evident in their training which helped them stay ahead and even get further ahead of everyone else.
"We would like a campsite please. Just enough for four people since we will go in to the dungeon in two groups at different times." Professor Wright moved toward a man standing in the open.
The man immediately nodded his head and began to lead them toward an open space. He removed a simple sign and handed them a slip of paper. This was their proof that they were renting the space he kept clear. This was a common profession near dungeons. Many people would fight over good spots so some people found the best way to profit.
"Reese, Brad, Maria. You three will go with Clark. I want Reese to attack, Brad to defend, and Maria to heal. Clark will be covering weaknesses and learning to lead the group. I expect teamwork and improvements. I will have my eye on you, just say when you are ready." Professor Wright pulled Grace, Ella, Ralph, and Isa aside to speak with them.
It appeared she had different goals for each group while exploring the dungeon.
"The third floor. That is as far as we go." Clark made this clear. The floors lower than that were for more professional tamers. They were too young and the dangers were not worth it. Especially since this was training and a chance to hunt materials for Reeses' partner.
"That is fine. I will be able to train better in safer places." Reese agreed whole heartedly. Maria nodded along. She trusted Clark and showed it with a smile. Brad didn't appear to have anything to say. He had already decided to follow Clark without question.
"Oh, and Brad, remember that you can't use your possessed helm since it is acclimating to the taming space. You are on your own when it comes to defenses. So, we are going to look for a new shield around here first." The sudden shopping was not expected but made a lot of sense. Clark also wanted to get a feel for what they might find in the dungeon.
