Chapter 985 954: The Small Bar
Chapter 985 954: The Small Bar
"I'm tired, you go back first." Nicholas didn't mind Augusto's scrutiny, yawned in sync with his comment, and truly fell asleep on the sofa, completely unguarded.
Tuesday! A mundane workday ushered in beautiful sunshine and mood; it was serene and slow here, warm sunlight spilled over the blue rooftops, a calming shade like the calm sea that delights the spirit.
Xiao Lin ran barefoot on the water, fine sand slipping through his toes, frolicking on the beach just like any other tourist.
"Is that the Oriental?" A tall man in the distance held binoculars, observing Xiao Lin's every move, his face twitching involuntarily with each one. He asked in a deep voice to the person next to him.
"BOSS, the Miss has been with the Oriental ever since she entered the country. If it weren't for the prior news, during the youth hostel explosion, Miss would've..." Before the young man could finish his report, he was hit by a punch from the tall man, his face swelling up at once.
"I want more information on this person." Tossing the binoculars to the person beside him, Edmund got into the car.
Returning from the sea to the beach, Xiao Lin used his fingers to comb through his hair, gazing deeply at the spot where Edmund stood. He picked up a towel and went beneath the sunshade. Several tall girls passed by him, greeting him enthusiastically, but soon left again. He always refused the advances of pretty women, yet flirted with them warmly. This entire scene was captured under the camera's flash. Xiao Lin's smile grew deeper, his mirth more pronounced.
A cute little girl from afar approached Xiao Lin with a newly blossomed sunflower. "Big brother, this is for you!" Her childish voice bore shyness, her chubby little hands stills carrying grains of white sand, her golden hair tied into adorable little onion buns.
"Thank you!" Xiao Lin lifted the girl up, kissed her forehead, as she wiggled her little hips and ran back to her mom.
Twisting the sunflower in his hand, he smelled it! The fragrance endemic to tropical plants was as vibrant as their warmth. One hand in his pant pocket, with a sunflower in the right, Xiao Lin walked in his intended direction. Clean streets adorned with small blooms all around; the locals' love for flora and light was visible everywhere. The Mediterranean vibe alleviates even the gloomiest psyche here.
The leisurely walker ahead more relaxed than those closely trailing behind. Xiao Lin walked into a cafe, bought a cup of black coffee, his gaze behind sunglasses scanning the newcomers, lips curved into a smile, bumping shoulders with a newspaper-wielding person.
"Sorry!" Xiao Lin greeted the person he bumped into.
"Watch where you're going!" The other party glared at him hostilely. Xiao Lin shrugged, already on the street.
Sipping coffee, strolling the streets, as the last liquid entered his stomach, Xiao Lin suddenly vanished from view. "Where did he go?" The two exchanged a look and split towards alleyways on either side.
Xiao Lin calmly walked out from a home, heading towards another man ahead. His left hand suddenly and deftly latched onto the man's neck, pulling him to the side. "Stop following me!"
"What are you saying, sir, I don't understand you!" The man clearly startled, hands pressed against the white wall, his head tilted, babbling.
"Is that so?" Xiao Lin tightened his grip, silencing the shouts. "Go back and tell your BOSS, if I see you again, it won't be this simple. Scram!" Xiao Lin forcefully tossed the man onto the street; beneath the sunglasses, his cold stare pained the fallen man into silence. As his two pursuers were about to strike, the man on the ground waved them off, exchanging glances before vanishing from Xiao Lin's sight. Alas, not wanting to attract attention, but trouble always trailed like a shadow.
Crossing three streets, Xiao Lin entered an open chapel, seemingly witnessing a family's baptism ceremony for a newborn. After a loop, Xiao Lin walked out to the backyard, arriving at a sunflower-filled plot where a little boy squatted, cradling a stick in his left hand, playing with mud.
Xiao Lin crouched beside him, "You're a little late!" The boy poked an uncovered worm with a twig.
"Ran into some rats on the way, had to clear them out." An adult and a child squatting before the flowerbed caught benevolent glances from the mass attendants.
"Car's in the back!" Xiao Lin picked up the boy, "Time to head home for dinner!" His right hand playfully swatted the child's behind twice, prompting a cutely irate expression from the face-down boy.
"Hey, Xiao, do you have to be like this?" Tossed into the passenger seat, Charles leapt up, hands on his hips, flushed red all over.
"Those ladies are watching you; play along lest you're discovered. We're leaving now!" Completely disregarding the assassin, Xiao Lin shifted gears and hit the gas, whooshing away. Frightened, Charles hastily buckled up.
"Is everything ready?"
"It's in the trunk, but don't get your hopes up, there's not much." Charles grabbed his hair, one hand firmly holding onto the handle.
Xiao Lin dropped Charles off near 'Wagangai'. "I..."
"Haha... don't worry, I understand!" Xiao Lin smiled at Charles, started the car again, and sped forward.
Close to eight o'clock, the sky gradually began to darken, layered clouds hung in the sky, and a cobalt blue Chevrolet quietly drove to the edge of a trash can. The wide alley wasn't deep, and from the entrance, you could see the lights of the exit ahead and the flow of people coming and going.
The car engine stopped, and a lean man in black stepped out. His black hair blew in the wind as he lifted a bag from the trunk and hurriedly climbed the fire escape. The iron staircase made no sound under his swift movements.
When night truly fell, the darkness belonging to this city was just beginning. Nocturnal creatures extended their claws to explore the all-encompassing land. Darkness could conceal ugliness, blind eyes, and accommodate any unspeakable dealings.
A batch of cargo freshly unloaded from the ferry was placed in a container truck, slowly departing the dock. The headlights flashed as it sped down the highway.
The time for the ban had passed, and the police at the checkpoint only noted the license plate number, allowing the truck to proceed. Underneath the painted designs was a family emblem; who would dare to intercept it?
The night sea breeze raised goosebumps on the person crouched on the rooftop, stirring after a long blast of a horn. The container, though bulky, skillfully squeezed its massive body through the passageway between two buildings, just barely fitting.
From his high vantage point, Xiao Lin watched the container truck. It remained silent after stopping. The prolonged wait lulled the land into sleep until the taillights lit up, the doors opened, and several people jumped out, guns in hand, spreading out and disappearing into the darkness, leaving the street hushed in the night.
A few Middle Eastern men in white robes emerged from a building on the left, pushing flat carts. Two of them climbed into the container, unloading rectangular boxes, while a few square ones were stacked onto the carts, pushed to the other end of the street.
Xiao Lin followed, weaving across rooftops. He finally halted when he saw them enter a small bar. The container truck didn't stay but drove straight out of the street. The dispersed men posed a threat, as from his high position, he couldn't accurately judge their locations, and if he entered the bar, he would inevitably be watched. Just as he was caught in this dilemma, a group of revelers, fresh from a celebration, entered from the street's end, both men and women alike.
"It's still early, why don't we have a little more before heading back?" Someone suggested, pointing at a small bar with a sign offering specials. "This place looks nice!"
The girl's invitation acted like a catalyst, the boys shrugged with a carefree attitude, thinking that maybe they could end the night with a beautiful partner.
Since the bar was open, it meant business. As the group poured into the bar, they found it already packed. The girl looked disappointedly at the crowd behind her. "It's nice here, but unfortunately, there's no space. Let's try somewhere else!"
Eight people went in, but only seven came out.
"Keep an eye on that group, I'm going to check the back!"
A shadow was already closely following the man as he turned, stepping on his shadow like a giant bird, swooping up and down. The man froze, wary, glancing back. He always felt someone was behind him, yet every time he turned, he faced only the pitch-black night.
"JOY, why are you here instead of watching the front?" Suddenly, from the darkness, a person emerged, grabbing JOY by the shoulder to stop him from entering the room behind him.
"A group of guests arrived outside, seemed off, so I came to check if something's up."
"The exterior is your area of responsibility, don't come back here casually, or the boss might skin you alive."
"Yeah, Jack's dead, and now everyone's talking about who's going to take his place. You better be careful too." With that, JOY retreated, while the man who stopped him spat at his back, expressing disdain with a cold snort.
"Damn, clearly wants the position for himself, still acting innocent. Who doesn't know he's the boss's kept man!"
