Chapter 1429 - 28 : The Climax

*Saoirse*

I smiled as I sat down on my bed, my body reappearing at the same instant. I tossed the staff from one hand to the other feeling more confident than I had since Axureon brought me to the Dragon Valley.

I was able to make myself invisible. With every successful time I managed it, my confidence grew. As I tested my skill, I journeyed farther past any of the trails I had been on.

Knowing the trails would come in handy when I escaped.

All the while I roamed, I looked for Rhys, but I had yet to find him. The anxiety of not knowing where he was gnawed at me. Finding him was going to be the hardest part of the escape, but I wouldn’t leave without him.

Somebody banged on my door suddenly. I jumped up from the bed. I already had my practice with Axureon for the day, so nobody should have been bothering me. My body disappeared again as if in a defensive manner.

Luckily, it had. Not even a second later, the door was kicked in.

I stepped back, pressing myself against the wall as the annoying girl from the trail and another girl stepped into my small little hut.

"It doesn’t look like she’s here, Claire," the smaller girl with the mousy brown hair said as she looked around.

"I saw her walk in here," Claire growled out. "She could be hiding. Search the place. I’ll get this invader out if it’s the last thing I do."

I walked quietly along the wall, making no noise as they began their search to find me. It was surprisingly easy to sneak out of the front door that they had left wide open. As soon as I had cleared the room, I took off at a faster pace, trying to put some distance between me and the dragon girls.

If they wanted me gone, then I would grant their wish.

I glanced back at my place to make sure that they weren’t following me. At that moment, I ran right into something hard. Just because I was invisible didn’t mean that my body was any less solid. I stumbled backward slightly.

"What was that?" the figure asked in front of me. "Who’s there?"

I recognized that voice.

"Rhys!" I breathed out in relief, looking up at the man in front of me. Just seeing him made everything feel right again.

"Saoirse?" Rhys asked, his dark eyes looking around in confusion.

I was still invisible. Just as quickly as I had turned invisible, my body reappeared. Rhys only had a second to stare at my apparated form in surprise before I jumped into his arms, wrapping them around him as tightly as they would go.

There was no hesitation as Rhys wrapped his arms around me and pulled me tighter. I buried my face into his neck, soaking in his scent that I had missed so much. It had only been a little over a week, but it felt so much longer than that.

"Saoirse..." I heard him whisper my name as he pressed his cheek against the side of my head. My heart fluttered, but his voice brought me back to reality.

"What are you doing over here?" I asked as I forced myself to loosen my grip and slide down his body.

Rhys wasn’t so willing to let me go. His arms slid down with me, keeping me pulled tight against him. I had to crane my neck to look into his eyes, but I didn’t care. My breathing was becoming short and shallow as my heart skipped again at the crimson I saw burning there.

"I’ve been looking for you for days," Rhys said. "Axureon refused to let me see you, but I couldn’t stay away. I had to find you and make sure you were okay."

One of his hands released its grip so that it could come up to cup my face. My cheeks warmed under his touch, but I had never felt more in control of my powers than at that moment.

"I’ve been looking for you too," I whispered, unable to look away from him. "I wanted to find you so we could leave this place."

Rhys almost seemed relieved by my words. "Whatever you want, I am here for you."

I stared up at him, the warmth spreading from my cheek throughout my entire body. He wasn’t looking away from me either. It was as if he was afraid that if he looked away from me again, I might disappear forever.

His eyes glanced down at my lips, and I felt my mouth water in response. When his eyes flashed back to mine, they were bright red again. I glanced at his lips, watching as he licked them, and felt myself leaning closer to him. Memories of our kiss flashed through my mind as the anticipation built.

Shouts echoed in the distance, snapping both of us out of our trance.

"What’s your plan of escape?" Rhys asked, smiling down at me. "I know you have one."

I nodded. "As you saw, I have found the skill to turn myself invisible. I am hoping that I can extend it and turn you invisible too. Then the fastest thing would probably be for you to shift and have me ride on your back down the steep mountain pass."

I hesitated, realizing what I was asking.

"I mean, if that’s alright with you, of course," I stammered. "I know that it’s probably against etiquette or something for someone to ride on the prince."

Rhys’ thumb moved over to gently cover my lips, stopping my rambling.

"You can ride me anytime, Saoirse," he said.

My face burned as my mind thought of the double meaning of his words. For the first time since finding him, I looked away from his face. His hand moved under my chin and tilted my head to look at him again.

Shouts echoed again, sounding a little closer.

"Shit, we’ve gotta get going," I said.

I pulled myself away from Rhys, which felt like dropping into icy water, but I had to step back and pick up the staff I dropped when I bumped into him.

Rhys followed closely the couple of steps and was close enough that as soon as I grabbed the staff, I could simply reach out and grab his arm. My brow furrowed in focus. I watched as myself and Rhys disappeared.

A sigh of relief left my lips. The invisibility would help a lot in my plan. In fact, if it hadn’t worked, it would have been nearly impossible to escape without being caught. That was the flaw in being in a village of people able to shift and fly.

Rhys and I appeared again.

"Hurry and shift," I whispered, unsure of how close the dragons were to us or how good their hearing was. "Once you’ve shifted, I will climb up and turn us invisible again."

Rhys unbuttoned his shirt and slung it off in what seemed like one swift movement, leaving me staring at his bare, chiseled chest. I was right. He was much more muscular than his clothing betrayed. I found my mouth watering involuntarily again.

"What are you doing?" I asked quickly as he started on the button for his pants.

"Well, I’ll need clothes again," Rhys said. "I’d rather not destroy them when I shift. Can you fit them in the little pack on your back?"

"Um, ye-yeah, I can do that," I said, pulling the pack from my back as he handed me his shirt.

The heat coursing through me was almost unbearable, but I tried to force it back down. He started to take off his pants and undergarments. I tried to keep my eyes focused on the bag and not look. But when he handed me the rest of his clothes, I felt my breath catch in my throat as I caught a glimpse of his fully naked form.

I whipped around before I could do something dumb and focused on the breathing exercises I had been working on over the past week. Everything was stronger now, which seemed to include my attraction to Rhys.

A wet nose nudged my hand. I turned to see the large black wolf that had saved me once standing in front of me. I tried not to feel too disappointed about Rhys’ missing form. He would be much easier to resist now, and I needed to stay focused.

I climbed on his back with skill, thanks to a life living in a wolf pack, and settled myself into place. A thought came to mind on whether or not I would ever get my wolf at this point. I was already over eighteen and without a wolf, which was rare, but maybe the magic powers prevented it.

That wasn’t something I could dwell on at the moment. I focused on the two of us again and was proud when we disappeared. As soon as our forms were invisible, Rhys began to move.

It was disorienting to be riding an invisible wolf, and I felt unstable as he moved and turned. Finally, after attempting to stay upright to monitor the surroundings and guide Rhys, I had to lean forward and wrap one of my arms around his neck, laying against the fur.

Rhys hummed in pleasure and kept moving.

Relief passed through me as we cleared the valley with no run-ins or issues at all. Even with my invisibility, I had worried. I expected a magic barrier or something almost to keep me from leaving, to prove it was a prison.

Yet there was nothing.

The smooth valley floor turned into a rocky mountain pass, but Rhys kept up his speed and agility. If I couldn’t see the uneven ground passing below us, I wouldn’t have ever guessed that we had changed terrain because Rhys was so gentle.

He kept it up for hours. Even as the sky started to darken and the ground became hard to see, Rhys pushed on. It was me that ended up not being able to cut it.

Our shapes flickered into existence once and then twice and then stayed solid. The exertion of keeping both of us invisible for so long was taking its toll on me. I could feel myself swaying and sliding off of Rhys’ smooth fur.

In one seamless move, Rhys shifted to his human form and twisted around to catch me before I could slip off his back and onto the ground. He hooked my knees under his arm and hitched me up more securely against his chest.

"Saoirse, why didn’t you tell me to stop?" Rhys asked in a worried tone.

"I’m fine," I said, nuzzling my head against his warm chest.

"We can take a rest," he said. "We should be far enough away by now to not have to worry. I’ll still find a little coverage so they won’t be able to see us if they fly overhead."

He began to walk again, this time in his human form, as he carried me over to some of the thick evergreens. The more he walked, the more I came back to it. Without the force of the invisibility spell, my energy was coming back quickly.

The moon was bright enough that I could still see Rhys’ face as he walked. There was a wrinkle along his entire forehead, and his mouth was turned down at the corners. He was still worried.

I reached my hand up and stroked it gently against his face, causing him to stop in surprise and stare down at me.

"I’m fine," I reassured him, smiling to enforce my point.

He sighed and tilted his head to lean into my hand. His eyes were bright even in the dark, and they burned into me, setting a fire that was similar to the magic that burned in my chest. As with the magic, I had no control as it spread throughout my entire body.

Before I could think about what I was doing, I straightened up and used my hand to pull his face toward mine.

Our lips touched, and it was pure bliss. I suddenly felt like I couldn’t get enough of him and pressed against his lips even harder.
