Chapter 597: Heroes’ Afterparty (Part 2)
"Come on...give me some luck, come on...! Fuck!" Exclaimed Ciel indignantly, as she landed on another snake.
"Wow, that one takes you a whole five rows down, that’s rough," Remarked Jaden with a chuckle, as Ciel took a puff of a joint and slumped back with a huff.
"My turn...two. My progress is so slow," Sighed Cleo, moving her piece a couple of spaces forward.
"Alright, back to me! Come on, four, four, four, four...oh, hell, yeah!" Grinned Jaden, rolling a four and landing on a ladder, which took him all the way up to the ninety-second space.
He’s eight away from the finish line...though, if he gets a three and lands on ninety-five, he’ll go all the way back to the twenty-sixth space.
"You sure you aren’t using your telekinesis to control the dice and cheat? You haven’t landed on a single snake all game," Frowned Ciel suspiciously.
"Heh, what can I say, I’m just lucky. And no, I’m not cheating. And the lie detector says...," He trailed off as he glanced at me.
"Yeah, I’m not sensing any deceit," I confirmed, before picking up the dice.
I’m not in too bad a spot, I’m on the seventy-third space, and there are no snakes ahead for the next ten spaces. No ladders either, though.
Aria’s at eighty-eight, Cleo isn’t too far behind me at sixty-five, and Ciel...is all the way down at fifteen.
I’d been neck and neck with Jaden for a while, who’d mostly been rolling twos and threes, making relatively slow progress...until he landed on that ladder that propelled him all the way to the lead.
"A five, that puts me up to...seventy-eight," I moved my piece, before tossing a chip up and catching it in my mouth.
Nice.
"My turn...come on, give me something good. Oh, a four, not bad," Remarked Aria, moving to the same space Jaden was on.
"Ugh, is there even any point to me playing anymore? I don’t stand a chance of winning...," Sighed Ciel, as she rolled a six...followed by another six.
And then a one. And another six. And...a four.
"Holy shit," Remarked Jaden in bemusement, as Ciel took a moment to scan the board.
"Okay, got it. First, I’ll use one of my sixes and the four to move ten spaces to this ladder, which takes me to fifty. Next, I’ll use my one, and another six," She declared, moving seven spaces and avoiding a snake on the fifty-sixth space.
She then used her remaining six, landing on the sixty-third space.
"How’d you go from near the bottom to just two spaces behind me? Come on, I need a big roll-...okay, this isn’t fair," Groaned Cleo, as she rolled a two.
"Alright, let’s end this, give me a six and a two! Oh, a five...well, at least I don’t need to worry about the snakes anymore," Remarked Jaden, moving up to ninety-seven, before pausing and adding, "Wait, do I have to get the exact number to reach the finish line? Or can I still land on it if I roll a higher number?"
"Some people play with the rule that you need the exact number, some even make you move back with the excess amount, but those rules are a pain, so yeah, even if you roll a higher number, you’ll win," I replied after taking a moment to mull it over.
"Uh, not sure what you mean by moving back with the excess amount, how does that work?"
"So, under that rule, in your current position, if you were to roll, say, a five...you’d move three spaces forward, and then two spaces back," I explained.
"Oh...yeah, that sucks. So, if I was on ninety-nine and rolled a six, I’d end up landing on the snake?"
"Mhm, yeah, exactly."
"Yeah, no, fuck that rule," He shook his head apprehensively, before taking a puff of the joint as Ciel passed it to him, exhaling through his nostrils.
"Back to me again. Oh, nice, a six. And...a three. So, I go up to eighty-seven. Hm...I’m not particularly superstitious, maybe just a little stitious, but isn’t that an unlucky number?" I grinned sheepishly.
"Is it?" Responded Ciel uncertainly.
"I don’t think it is anymore. But in the past, it was considered unlucky in Australia, since it’s thirteen away from a hundred. If I’m not mistaken, I think it was a cricket thing," Cleo informed her.
"Like, the bug?"
"Huh? No, I meant the sport. Scoring a hundred is a milestone in the sport, so eighty-seven was seen as an unlucky score to land on because it’s thirteen away from that milestone."
Huh, I didn’t know that. Wasn’t really into watching sports in my old life. Though, I have seen bits and pieces of cricket matches since my deadbeat father was a fan of the sport.
"No! Damn it!" Exclaimed Aria in dismay, as she rolled a three and landed on the snake, going all the way back to the twenty-sixth space.
"Okay, I’m really starting to hate dice, what does this thing have against me?!" Huffed Cleo incredulously, as she rolled another two.
"Heh, that’s rough. Now, then, time for me to win," Grinned Jaden, as he picked up the dice.
"Huh, so long as you don’t roll a two, you’re pretty much guaranteed to win in this turn," Remarked Aria, as Jaden took a deep breath.
Yeah, he’s three away. If he rolls a one, he can roll again, the only way he isn’t going to win in this turn is if he rolls a two.
"Here goes...! Heh, looks like it’s a six, I don’t even need it at this stage," He remarked smugly, as he moved his piece to the final space and pumped his arms up triumphantly.
"Yeah, this isn’t fair," Grumbled Cleo, before taking a long, deep drag of the joint, exhaling with a huff.
"Alright, guess we might as well play for second and third place too. My turn," I declared, as I picked up the dice.
