Chapter 1176: Stories from the Orphanage
Su Wanxin glanced at Fu Shihan’s cold face and then at Cheng Yao, pressing her lips into a smile.
The moment Cheng Yao saw her, her eyes brightened, as if she had been waiting for her appearance.
Su Wanxin walked straight over and sat down beside Fu Shihan, and with just one sentence, made the light in Cheng Yao’s eyes disappear: "Sorry for not dying as you wished."
Cheng Yao looked at her with bloodshot eyes, filled with hatred and despair. Su Wanxin turned to look at Fu Shihan, "Can I talk to her alone for a moment?"
Fu Shihan hesitated for a moment and then stepped out of the room. Outside the door, he lit a cigarette, feeling a bit irritated.
The room was left with just the two of them. Su Wanxin leaned back against the chair, quietly observing Cheng Yao’s features, and after a long moment, softly asked, "When did we first meet? Was it at the orphanage?"
When she was sent to the orphanage, she was still young. Besides the terrifying memories left by the principal, she could hardly remember anything else. Including those who were once locked in the small dark room with her, she could no longer recall their faces or even their names.
Cheng Yao remained silent, so Su Wanxin continued to ask, "I checked, you weren’t the one who was selected with me back then, so who exactly are you?"
"That person..." Cheng Yao’s cracked lips moved, and in a hoarse voice, she said, "Do you still remember what that person looked like or their name?"
Su Wanxin lowered her eyes, hesitated for a moment, then shook her head.
Cheng Yao sneered and let out a long sigh. "I knew it, I knew it would be like this. People like you, what can you remember?"
Her laughter grew louder, and she laughed for quite a while until tears came before she slowly calmed down.
"Su Wanxin, let me tell you a story."
"Alright."
"Once upon a time, there was a girl named Cheng Xia. Her mother was a hostess at a KTV bar, and her father was an unknown customer.
From the day she was born, she was unwelcome in this world. No one anticipated her arrival, not even her only relative.
She grew up in the dressing room of a nightclub, until the year she turned five, when her mother overdosed and died, leaving her to be naturally sent to the orphanage.
The orphanage life wasn’t great, but at least there were three meals a day and a bed to sleep in.
She thought that as long as she behaved, maybe someone would like her enough to take her home. She could then go to school like the kids on TV, grow up well, and become better and better.
So she waited day after day, with hope in her heart. Finally, one day, the principal happily told her that she had been selected.
On the night she received the news, she was so happy that she couldn’t sleep. Soon, she was picked up from the local orphanage and taken to another city.
The unfamiliar environment made her a bit scared, but she had no choice. She had to wait here for the person who had chosen her to come and meet her.
At first, she didn’t understand why they chose this place. Later she realized it wasn’t just her who had been selected; there was another girl on the list too.
She was sent to the orphanage where the other girl was and met the rival who was competing for happiness with her.
She stayed at that orphanage for two months, and on her birthday, she finally met that family.
She had never seen such beautiful people, especially that boy, who seemed to glow. She wore her prettiest dress, but in front of him, she didn’t even dare to lift her head. She tried hard to speak to him, but before she could open her mouth, she saw him pointing to the person next to her and saying—
"Her, the ugly girl with the braids."
