Chapter 37: Let’s Get Divorced
Chapter 37: Let’s Get Divorced
Jia Xiufang was downstairs making phone calls with great enthusiasm, while Qian sat beside her, looking at her mother’s no-longer-young face.
Her mom was a beauty when she was young and had a romantic past with Chen Lin. Dating was different in those days; giving each other food or casting a furtive glance while working in the production team was quite forward back then.
"Her fourth aunt, my daughter has become successful..."
Jia Xiufang was just laughing, but now she’s crying again.
Qian handed her a tissue, and Jia Xiufang blew her nose, continuing to ramble.
Qian looked at her mom, who aged and didn’t pay attention to keeping fit, buying cheap market clothes, T-shirts costing a few dollars, washed to the point of changing color. She’s afraid of the leftover food going bad, so she eats it all by herself.
Her body changed from eating that, getting a bunch of illnesses, and breaking her heart for this family, but who ever appreciated her?
Jia Xiufang isn’t stupid, she was just exploited by old beliefs. So many women think giving their all to their family will get them rewarded, loving their husbands so much that they lose themselves.
In the imagined world, the more you love, the more you get in return. But reality is cruel like this, women burning their youth for the family their whole life, in the end, getting dumped, even thrown out of the house. Qian has seen too much of it.
Many rich wives would come to her for psychological consultancy, crying and asking how come, after following that damned husband since youth and going through all hardships, he just became heartless and got together with an outside vixen. Why!
The sentence Qian says most often is, when marriage hits a crisis, don’t ask why, think about how to handle it instead. Don’t use unseen conscience to restrain visible desires.
Love is invisible and untouchable, and it can vanish just like that.
Money is visible and tangible and can buy many things.
The tendency to like the new and loathe the old is a human instinct.
When in love, they say money is vulgar, but when love is gone, faces are torn, and they fight for this ’vulgar item’, who remembers the past love?
Did Jia Xiufang ever think, when she was secretly sending Chen Lin fruit, that she’d be treated cruelly by him decades later?
Qian often wonders, if she had married Yu Minglang in a past life, what she and Yu Minglang would be like decades later.
Both are highly intelligent, and if they were to fight, it would definitely be much fiercer than her parents. But, even though Qian has a thousand methods, she wouldn’t want to use them on Yu Minglang, that’s her bottom line. Plus, she firmly believes that if she were with Yu Minglang, he would never betray her.
Yu Minglang sought her his whole previous life. If even Yu Minglang is untrustworthy, then what is left to believe?
Thinking of Yu Minglang made Qian’s OCD flare up; she quickly turned on the faucet, feeling the warmth of her daughter’s blood on her hands, as if it was questioning her conscience. How could someone like her deserve a new life?
Meeting Yu Minglang intensified her condition, as if an invisible string was deliberately bringing her to encounter Yu Minglang. She could feel it—meeting Yu Minglang made her emotions uncontrollable; as the condition continues worsening, it can only be controlled by medication.
But Qian knows, even with medication control, her condition will keep getting worse. She cannot treat her OCD, and even finding another psychologist would be futile. Psychologists are like doctors treating the body—once the illness is contracted, it’s difficult to cure.
It’s because she knows too much.
Chen Lin came downstairs, tight-faced, glaring at Qian with a gaze full of resentment.
Qian dried her hands with a towel, "I got into a university; you don’t seem very happy?"
What a load of crap, I’m gonna be pissed to death by you! Chen Lin really wanted to slap Qian a few times.
"Even if I’m not happy, what can I do? My mom just called my grandmother; the old lady was overjoyed."
The shadow in Chen Lin’s heart was incalculable.
Now that the old lady knows, this matter has to be settled.
Unlike Chen Lin’s preference for sons over daughters, grandma was relatively open-minded. Qian spent some time being raised by grandma when she was little, and the old lady had the deepest feelings for Qian.
Though stingy, Chen Lin was still filial to his mother. Knowing even his mom knows about this, it looks like this girl must go to school.
He glared at Qian viciously and turned to leave.
Jia Xiufang held the receiver, yelling, "His father, where are you going?"
All she got in response was the loud sound of Chen Lin slamming the door.
Jia Xiufang hung up the phone.
"Qian’er, why is your father unhappy?"
Qian got into a top university; such a prideful thing, why didn’t Chen Lin even have a smile?
"You should go upstairs and check if the bankbook is still there."
Jia Xiufang hadn’t reacted to what’s going on before Qian pushed her upstairs.
If she guessed right, Chen Lin might not come back for days after leaving.
Chen Lin embodies all the shortcomings of men: lustful, greedy, stingy, bullying the weak while fearing the strong, hitting his wife, gambling, and running from trouble.
He’s probably used all the family’s money for gambling or on his mistress, and then planned to do something with Qian’s bride price, but did not expect the marriage not to go through, and on top of that, Qian dropped a king-bomb-like acceptance letter.
Chen Lin can’t come up with the tuition and doesn’t want to face Jia Xiufang’s and the relatives’ accusations, so now he will definitely hide somewhere, either playing mahjong every day or shacking up with his mistress. Either way, before Qian starts school, he will definitely not return.
"Ah!" Jia Xiufang’s scream echoed from upstairs, and Qian smirked, closing her eyes.
See, she guessed it, this is the darkness of human nature.
Qian handed over tissues, and Jia Xiufang blew her nose hard, crying into a mess of tears.
A pile of tissue balls had already formed.
"What do we do now? Your scatterbrained dad took all our cash and bankbook; all we have is a few hundred bucks at the counter, what to use for your school admission banquet..."
Qian rolled her eyes, "At a time like this, you’re still thinking about a banquet?"
The husband is gone, yet she can still think of this? Her mom seems to have never grasped the point her whole life, muddling through half her life except for giving birth to a dependable her.
"Why wouldn’t I think about it? Your uncle’s cousin got into a crappy college, and they set up more than 20 tables, showing off so much... A few days ago, I ran into your aunt, who hinted sarcastically about your situation. I just don’t accept it!"
"... And isn’t it that, instead of thinking about how to confront my dad?" Qian finally couldn’t listen any longer.
Her mom must have had a gene mutation to give birth to someone like her with this level of intelligence.
"Qian’er, what are you saying?"
"Divorce! Provide the court with evidence of him taking money and running, and fight for more assets!" This area is about to undergo relocation, so Qian absolutely wouldn’t allow her mother to end up with nothing again like in her past life.
"... What nonsense are you talking!!! How could I possibly divorce your dad!" Jia Xiufang was shocked silly.
Divorce, she never even thought about it.
