Chapter 610 - 605: He’s Back
Chapter 610 - 605: He’s Back
Luo Zhiyong made a phone call home from the training base. After hanging up, he sat in the office, and it took him a long time to come back to his senses. His mind was a blank, and he didn’t know what he was thinking.
Sitting across from him was Commander Xu, who also trained at the training base. Seeing that Luo Zhiyong’s expression was off, he asked, "Is there something wrong at home?"
Luo Zhiyong nodded and sighed, "Yes, my child’s mother is ill and has been hospitalized."
Commander Xu and Luo Zhiyong were from the same military region, and they had come out on a mission together this time. They were close and Commander Xu knew a bit about Zhiyong’s family situation. He originally wanted to ask how Fang Pingying was doing, but seeing Luo Zhiyong’s distracted expression, he thought for a second and said, "Zhiyong, if you don’t mind the hardship, I can give you half a day off."
Although they were not supposed to leave during the training period, the military would accommodate if there was a family emergency and a half-day leave was requested.
The training camp was actually not far from their urban area; one trip took over two hours, so a round trip would take about five hours.
With a half-day’s leave, subtracting the travel time, Luo Zhiyong would only have about half an hour at home. If the timing was not well managed, he might only get to see Fang Pingying for a moment and then immediately have to hurry back to the military, where a high-intensity training session awaited in the evening - something even a normal person might not be able to endure.
But when Luo Zhiyong heard Commander Xu agree to the leave, he didn’t think twice, thanked the commander, and immediately strode excitedly towards the exit.
The so-called idea of letting go that he had in mind earlier was already thrown out of his mind.
Not to mention half an hour — even if he could only see Fang Pingying for a moment, to confirm she was fine, he felt it was worth it.
So, Luo Zhiyong didn’t even change his clothes and hitched a ride back to the city with the military transport without managing to call home. He guessed Fang Pingying must be in the hospital not far from their home.
When he arrived at the hospital, it was already past five in the afternoon. Luo Zhiyong asked the nurse at the front desk for Fang Pingying’s ward number, and, filled with excitement, he approached the ward door. Just as he was about to push the door open, he glanced through the glass of the ward door and saw the situation inside.
Fang Pingying was lying in bed, with Aunt Yuchun sitting beside her. About a meter away from the bedside sat a man watching—Luo Zhiyong recognized him from the back as Liu Fengsheng.
Luo Zhiyong didn’t know what Liu Fengsheng had said, but it made Aunt Yuchun burst out laughing. Fang Pingying also had a slight smile with pursed lips, and even though it wasn’t a strong laugh, it was clear she was happy.
Luo Zhiyong couldn’t remember how long it had been since he had seen Fang Pingying smile like that. It seemed that ever since they had separated and lived apart before the divorce, he hadn’t seen her smile this way.
Because since then, every encounter with Fang Pingying was mostly about dealing with some family issue. There was no time to laugh as they rushed to handle and solve these problems.
Luo Zhiyong wondered if it was him who made her lose the ability to smile and whether Fang Pingying would ever smile like this again in front of him.
Thinking this, the hand that was about to push the door paused. He stared blankly through the glass at Fang Pingying for a while. Although unwilling in his heart, his actions were unequivocal as he turned and walked away.
As long as she was alright, he was relieved.
As long as she was happy, he was willing to let go.
As if they had a telepathic connection, the moment Luo Zhiyong turned to leave, Fang Pingying, lying on the bed, sensed something and abruptly sat up, looking towards the door.
Aunt Yuchun and Liu Fengsheng were startled by her sudden movement, and they both looked towards the door and asked in unison, "What’s wrong, is someone coming?"
Fang Pingying called out to Aunt Yuchun with some urgency, pointing to the door, "Mom, go out and see if someone is there."
Aunt Yuchun peeked out and, seeing no one at the door, asked puzzledly, "What’s wrong?"
Fang Pingying didn’t know how to explain and just urged Aunt Yuchun with her hand, "Please go out and check if there’s anyone there."
With no other choice, Aunt Yuchun opened the door and looked both ways. There was indeed no one in the hospital corridor at the time; it wasn’t even particularly noisy. Aunt Yuchun came back and shook her head at Fang Pingying, "There’s no one, there’s nobody out there."
Aunt Yuchun thought Fang Pingying was hoping for family to visit her, and added, "At this time, your dad and your sister haven’t come back yet, and everyone else is at work or working. Who would come?"
Fang Pingying nodded, no longer speaking, but she seemed somewhat distracted. She didn’t know why, but she had a feeling someone was outside looking at her with eyes that seemed like...
Luo Zhiyong’s!
Although she knew he wouldn’t coincidentally return just as she thought, deep down she still harbored a faint hope.
Ever since he left, she did hear from Luo Honglan that he had called home a few times to check on Ruirui, Yaoyao, and inquire about Dashan’s condition, but she didn’t know if he was deliberately avoiding her or what. Whenever she was at home, she never received a call from him.
Realizing that he might be avoiding her, Fang Pingying felt rather upset, but at the same time conflictedly thought it was better this way. If they were to break it off, they might as well make it clear.
Yet in her heart, Fang Pingying still had some lingering concerns; she wanted to know how Luo Zhiyong was doing outside.
But when Aunt Yuchun insisted that there was no one outside, Fang Pingying also doubted her own feelings. Not wanting to worry Aunt Yuchun and the others, she shook her head, "Then I must have seen wrong. Maybe it’s just a relative of some other patient who found the wrong ward."
Although Fang Pingying diverted the matter smoothly, Aunt Yuchun believed her, but Liu Fengsheng took a deep look at Fang Pingying, discerning her thoughts.
In that instant, a bitter smile flickered across his eyes, but he softly reassured, "It’s probably not him. If it was him, after all the hardship to get here, he would have come in early."
Fang Pingying looked at Liu Fengsheng and nodded lightly.
With that, Liu Fengsheng felt a bit awkward staying there any longer. After a few casual instructions to Fang Pingying, he stood up to leave, "I think Tingting is almost back home, so I’ll head back first. With Aunt Yuchun here taking care of you, you’ll be fine, right?"
Fang Pingying didn’t particularly like Liu Fengsheng coming so often—it gave Aunt Yuchun and others the wrong impression. Hearing he was leaving, she was almost eager to nod her agreement, "Yes, you should go home early. I’ve asked the doctor, and I can be discharged in at most two days. No need for further visits. You’re busy with work and have your family to take care of, it’s hard on you."
Liu Fengsheng caught the eagerness in Fang Pingying’s desire to send him away and awkwardly pulled at his lip, "Alright, I’ll go then."
After Liu Fengsheng left the ward, he looked around and thought of the look in Fang Pingying’s eyes just before. He also wondered if Luo Zhiyong had come back.
