Chapter 1007: Excitement
Chapter 1007: Excitement
"Everyone, try to hatch more chicks, or else we’ll have a chicken farm with no chickens, and that’s no good.""Don’t worry, we’ll go back and check. Some of our old hens have already started brooding."
"There’s no need to hurry. Relying solely on our village won’t give us enough chicks. You can tell your relatives in other villages that we’re buying openly, and we’ll definitely pay well."
Li Yungui rallied everyone again, and they all quickly went home.
Wen Zhenzongze didn’t expect things to go so smoothly. In the future, they wouldn’t need to work in the fields; working at the chicken farm would certainly be lighter than farming.
Actually, he didn’t know about the village’s rotary tillers or seeders. The educated youths were also quite excited. With a chicken farm in the village, would it be easier to get eggs?
When Li Yungui got home, he went to find Lu Tiezhu. The chicken cages still needed him to figure out. Xiao Jiang’s blueprints alone wouldn’t suffice.
At the workshop, he saw Wei Kaiyun and Lu Tiezhu talking.
"So, Master Lu, can you make chicken cages?"
"I just looked at the blueprints. No problem; I can make them. But we need to buy materials."
"Okay, let me know what you need and how much, and I’ll go to the leaders to get a note."
"Village Chief Li, come to my place for dinner tonight, and we can discuss it together."
Li Yungui nodded with a smile, "That sounds good."
The workshop workers overheard their conversation and knew the village was building a chicken farm. That was great news, as the whole family could earn work points. How far off could good days be? How far off could blue-brick, tile-roofed houses be?
So they were even more motivated, looking forward to the future with hope.
By evening, even the elderly, who couldn’t move from their kang, and the little kids who just learned to speak, knew the village was getting a chicken farm.
Every household discussed it at the dinner table.
The Wei family had a good meal today: rice porridge with cornmeal pancakes, minced meat stir-fried with pickles, cabbage stir-fried with meat, potatoes stir-fried with meat, and shredded carrots stir-fried with eggs. All in large quantities.
Li Yungui looked at the shredded carrots, "Xiao Wei, why does this dish taste strange?"
"This is good stuff. If you have sores in your mouth, eat more of it."
"Does it really have that effect?"
"Sure does. My kids eat this dish almost every day."
"So this is the vegetable you planted in your private plot last year?"
"Yes, I saved some seeds. I’ll plant more this year. The yield is decent."
"Give me some seeds, and I’ll plant some. Cheng Lin loves getting mouth sores."
"Sure, no problem."
After dinner, they sat in the main room discussing the matter.
They finally decided to have Old Yang find some materials while the rest would have Li Yungui get a note from above.
"As long as we have all the materials, I can definitely make it," Lu Tiezhu promised, patting his chest, as it was actually pretty simple.
"Alright, I’ll go find the leader tomorrow."
Old Yang also nodded with a smile, "I’ll go look around tomorrow too." He would take his wife to the hospital for an ultrasound as well.
With everything discussed, Li Yungui, Lu Tiezhu, and Du Fengying left.
"Xiao Jiang, raising them like this, it’s easy for them to fall over each other," Old Yang said after they left.
Jiang Xinyu nodded, "I know, so the chicken coop must be clean, and the feed shouldn’t be moldy. It needs regular disinfection and scheduled medication. I know chickens need vitamin tablets and terramycin."
"No problem, I’ll figure it out for you."
Jiang Xinyu smiled, "Great."
The next day, Li Yungui and Li Cunshan went to choose the location for the chicken farm. As the snow slowly melted, they needed to finish building before the spring planting.
"Yungui, I’m worried that this chicken farm won’t work. We’ve had bird flu before, and didn’t they all die overnight?"
"I’ve thought about that. Xiao Jiang told me you need to medicate them often.
Plus, you need to maintain hygiene. From what I understand, the chickens will eventually be pickier than humans about what they eat.
The hens will definitely be kept in pens, whereas the roosters can be free-range."
"Alright then, let’s give it a try." Li Cunshan was quite skeptical, but since everyone was confident, he thought they might as well try.
The two of them finalized the location and began deciding who would build the structure.
At this point, the elderly all came over, "Gui Zi, is there anything we can do?"
"Second Uncle, we don’t need anything right now. You all rest; we’ll find a few people to move the bricks over, and then head to the neighboring village to source stones in the afternoon."
"So it’s really going to be a blue-brick, tile-roofed house?"
"Yes, better than what we’re living in now, and they’ll be eating better than us too," Li Yungui said with a smile.
"Gui Zi, there’s no rush anyway, we old folks can slowly move the bricks. We won’t be stubborn about it."
"Second Uncle, you really shouldn’t. We can have the kids come over after school to do it. We won’t let it interfere with anything important."
With this, the three old men were relieved, thinking they could help load the carts, speeding things up somehow.
"Yungui, let the educated youths do it. They’re being fed, so they should get used to it too."
"That’s a good idea. I’ll go find them. The brigade still has a few carts."
"Gui Zi, we’ll help load the carts."
"Okay, but really, don’t over-exert yourselves.
Big Brother, go get a few of the relocated folks to help unload the carts. If they can’t do heavy work, they can take it slow with the lighter tasks."
With this arrangement, the kids wouldn’t have to come work after school.
The two of them split up to find people, and Xu Chunshan and the others were chatting on the kang when they saw the village chief coming.
"Village Chief Li is here?" Shen Youjun said with a smile.
"Yes, get ready, I’m waiting for you. It’s time to be lively; you’re here for the rural experience, and it’s time to work."
The few of them had stayed over a month, thinking they could stay longer, but now it seemed that wouldn’t be the case.
The male educated youths left, and the female ones needed to change clothes.
After fifteen minutes, Li Yungui was getting a bit impatient when they finally came out. Seeing the village chief standing in the courtyard with a frown, they obediently lined up beside him.
Seeing their attire, Li Yungui frowned a bit, but didn’t say anything. Once they started working, they’d understand.
At the brigade headquarters, Li Yungui had each of them push a small cart. He led them to the area beside the pesticide factory where a dozen seniors were already waiting.
"The six of you, load the carts with the seniors, then push these blue bricks to the designated spot."
No one dared say anything. Despite being old, the seniors were much stronger at work than these city kids. However, Li Yungui didn’t criticize them; they’d adjust eventually.
