Chapter 885: CH264 (878), Getting Carried Away

'Name: Mutant Relicanth's Scale

Type: Water, Rock

Class: S

Description: A red scale from the right flank shed by a Mutant Relicanth containing potent water and rock-type energy. Due to the Relicanth's special body, the red scale contains a considerable amount of a unique form of aura capable of initiating various changes to its own energy as well as transformations in Pokémon. If processed, the scale can have beneficial effects on the development of those absorbing the resulting creation.'

I was slightly surprised that this one was called the same as the previous two scales, but I could see why it was of a higher class than them since the red scale felt a bit more special being one of the two red scales on Relicanth's whole body. The only thing I could think of that could be more special than that, at least coming from a Relicanth's exterior, would be its skull or a part of it.

Nonetheless, we were currently trying to intercept someone, so I lost no more time and directly put the scale away. I still made sure to praise Jade/Gyarados for finding the scale, before I once again led everyone towards the approaching Overlord. Since we were swimming as fast as I could go, we managed to cover nearly a kilometer and a half before we saw Gyarados' silhouette.

He made no attempt at restraining his might, so there was no doubt that it was one of the (high) platinum stage Gyarados Overlords, and seeing how he screamed that he had come to make Abyss/Gyarados his concubine, he was definitely the Overlord we saw at the last Gyarados home zone. After hearing that declaration of his Abyss let out an angry growl before she yelled to leave that worm to her.

Abyss then rushed out to meet that Gyarados before everyone else. Some grumbled and called her sneaky for taking the chance to challenge the Overlord on her own. I got the feeling that my guys and gals were not taking the opposition as seriously as they should. As much as I trusted them and considered them among the strongest of their kind in their "weight class", I did not think that Abyss could take down a (high) platinum stage Gyarados on her own.

That guy had managed to reach that point alongside others, and we had seen that they were not above fighting among themselves despite having the same boss, so he had to have an abundance of experience. Still, I did not stop Abyss from attacking Gyarados on her own since I was certain that she could face him on without dying, at least for a while.

'Let her do it if she wants, we'll go help her when she calls for help or can't hold out anymore,' I told everyone over the telepathic channel, and the grumbling vanished immediately. I could feel some doubt and curiosity from a few, while others seemed to simply accept my words.

'Mikail, you don't seem to think that Jade has a chance at beating that other Gyarados,' Jade/Gyarados as one of those doubtful ones pointed out, and I frankly nodded while watching Abyss and the Gyarados come within 50 meters of each other.

'She can't, at least not right now,' I admitted. 'I'm sure that she could beat that guy after breaking through to the next stage, and maybe even once she is close to completing her limit breaking phase, but as she is right now an experienced (high) platinum stage Gyarados is still too much for her to beat by herself,' I elaborated before stopping since Abyss and the Overlord finally clashed.

Once they were less than 30 meters apart, Abyss fired off a Dark Pulse. Gyarados matched it, leading to a beam clash. Meanwhile, I led everyone to advance for another 50 or so meters before we stopped to watch them fight from 80-plus meters away. This gave Abyss enough room for her fight and allowed us to reinforce her within a second or two if she needed help.

Everyone watched as the two Dark Pulses struggled against one another, and they all seemed pumped when it looked like the two beams were evenly matched. They were disregarding the fact that Gyarados' Dark Pulse was matching Abyss' Dark Pulse even though hers enjoyed a STAB bonus on top of her superior base racial energy capacity/potency value. Still, I kept quiet and watched to let them see for themselves how the fight would go.

It took a few seconds, but I noticed that the epicenter of their clash moved towards Abyss by a tiny bit despite the two advantages Abyss had. The change was "slow", but after a few more seconds the others noticed it as well. Abyss obviously did not miss it either and I had to admit that her reaction made me proud.

She briefly overloaded her Dark Pulse before cutting it off. She used the time her Dark Pulse pushed against the opposing Dark Pulse to dodge out of the beam's way and follow up with a Scary Snarl, which caused Gyarados some damage while slowing him down a bit. It also prevented him from adjusting his aim.

With the time that bought her, Abyss directly followed up with Sacarsm, temporarily cutting off Gyarados's ability to use non-offensive moves and preventing him from using the same move twice in a row. It also confused him, though it was a rather mild confusion since we had to weaken the effect to get rid of the enemy boosting aspect of Flatter. As it was, Gyarados would not misuse moves or miss by a lot, but he was likely to hesitate, which was usually good enough.

I would have had Abyss follow up with Nasty Plot to close the power difference between them some more, but she chose to close in on Gyarados instead. Once she was close enough we saw Abyss spin around, with her tail glowing black, likely from Brutal Swing. I knew I had misidentified the move when Abyss purposefully let her tail pass through Gyarados's Dark Pulse, suffering a bit of damage in the process. Damage that doubled the power of her Payback.

Her hit caused Gyarados to release a grunt of pain and forced the interruption of his Dark Pulse. A forced interruption like that would have usually bought Abyss a second or two before Gyarados would be able to use/follow up with another move, but Gyarados surprised all of us by directly retaliating with a Hyper Beam of all things. Abyss had no time to react, and I felt myself tense as Abyss was hit by the sudden Hyper Beam, pushing her back as she suffered under the attack's impact nearly defenselessly.

The only good bit was that the Hyper Beam pushed Abyss away from Gyarados, in case he was able to recover from the effects of his Hyper Beam before her. While Abyss had not let out any screams upon being hit by Hyper Beam, I could feel the pain she was feeling, but I also felt her stubbornness, which was why I clamped down on my own instinct to help her and kept the others from jumping in as they wanted to the moment she got hit.

Probably due to the impromptu manner it had been used, Gyarados was only able to keep the beam going for a few seconds, and while Abyss was visibly hurt, especially at the impact point, the sudden Hyper Beam was nowhere near enough to take her out. I could feel the anger and pain raging through Abyss, and she channeled those feelings into her next move.

A few moments after the Hyper Beam cut off, Abyss set loose the biggest Thunder I/we had ever seen her release, and while the Thunder made its way towards the still immobile Gyarados, we as individuals inside the same water body and in "close" proximity were unable to escape the range of the electric charge she released. It was nothing a few Protects could not stop, but I made a note to scold Abyss later for not channeling her Thunder better.

Still, the overpowered Thunder did cause Gyarados to release a roar of pain as his body seized up due to the high current wreaking havoc across his body. Yet, despite that, Gyarados still fired off a Hydro Pump, without showing any of the hesitation he was supposed to feel. Hydro Pump forced Abyss to swerve out of the way, but the short burst bought Gyarados enough time to close in on her. He did not bother with any fancy moves and slammed into her, forcing them into ultra close combat.

It looked like they were literally wrapping around one another with the occasional tail lashes, headbutts, and bites. If not for knowing what was going on, one might have misunderstood what was happening right now. A regular person seeing a video of what was happening right now might have believed that this was some brutal mating ritual, which honestly could not be blamed on the average person due to Gyarados's general reputation as an aggressive and brutal species.

Experienced trainers would notice that those bites were Crunches and Ice Fangs, while the tail slams were Aqua Tails, Iron Tails, or Brutal Swings. The headbutts were mostly Iron Heads, Payback, or actual Headbutts. I seriously considered reminding Abyss that she still could use other moves like Thunderbolt or at least Torment and Taunt since the latter had either run its course or was about to do so even if Gyarados seemed to be too invested in their current physical brawl to notice that.

Yet, Abyss's mental state had me hold my tongue. Her initial tactical moves that had made me proud were gone, leaving a mess of hits influenced by anger, frustration, pain, and irritation. It was such a contrast to Abyss's usual state of mind which was unusually calm due to her personality, at least for a dark type, that I chose to let her be. Gyarados's previous taunts/insults seemed to have pissed her off more than I thought possible and even if her personality was a calm one, bottling up emotions was dangerous especially for a dark type with a (semi) contrary personality like hers.

Hence, I simply continued to exert my psionic and aura senses to their maximum to monitor Abyss' state to ensure that we did not miss the timing where we had to interfere since it was clear to me and the others who were watching that Abyss was coming out worse during their exchange than Gyarados was. A few minutes later Abyss finally vented enough to realize that as well, and a few moments later her emotions returned to their usual calm.

She immediately released a Thunderbolt, shocking Gyarados, who was practically sticking to her, making his body spasm, which allowed her to open up some distance between them. She had to throw up a Protect immediately after to block the Hydro Pump Gyarados let out, but that did not stop her from following up with Sarcasm, refreshing the taunting and tormenting effect.

Her Protect cracked under the continuous pressure of Hydro Pump, though she managed to move her body out of the way to dodge the initial impact. Abyss reacted by firing off yet another Thunderbolt, which forced Gyarados to cut off his Hydro Pump and change to Ice Beam to block the Thunderbolt since dodging it risked catching stray currents.

Most of the ice produced by the Ice Beam melted during its clash with the Thunderbolt, but some remained and began floating upward, though before they could do so, Gyarados lashed out with his tail, sending them streaking towards Abyss, who had finally been about to use Nasty Plot. My girl actually tanked those ice chunks in favor of completing her Nasty Plot, which was the right choice since the ice chunks were more distracting than dangerous anyway.

In exchange for enduring minimal damage, she managed to boost the danger of her energy moves, and she made immediate use of that by firing off a Dark Pulse. Gyarados shot out a Hydro Pump to block her attack, and it barely managed to power through her attack, which was a big change compared to the previous Dark Pulse clash. While Gyarados still had the advantage, a more obvious one in fact, this time both sides were using STAB moves, and Hydro Pump was actually a stronger move than Dark Pulse, so Abyss/Dark Pulse's performance was comparatively speaking a lot more impressive this time around.
