Chapter 370 - 364: Falling Out and ’Sleeping’ (18)
Suddenly, Ji Zhengdao halted, turned, and looked at her. Ji Anning immediately snapped out of her reverie, shaking her head with a guilty expression, "Grandfather, actually I’m not as sensible as you all think."
Because of her guilt, her voice was much lower when she spoke.
"Don’t be modest now, get in the car with Grandfather."
The driver opened the door for them. Ji Anning got in first, and the old man followed, sitting next to her in the back seat.
This was the first time Ji Anning had been in the same car with him, and sitting side by side at that.
She felt immense pressure, her gaze fixed outside the window, occasionally glimpsing the elder beside her with the corner of her eye.
Thankfully, he was busy with work and didn’t pay her any attention.
’Ding’
All of a sudden, her phone in her bag pinged with a text message. Ji Anning frowned, her first thought being it was from Ji Chicheng, and after calculating the time, he should’ve just arrived in N City, so she was certain it was from him.
So she didn’t dare to take out her phone.
But then, her phone rang again, this time a call.
She turned her face to the window, frowning in annoyance, one hand fumbling in her bag to find her phone. She pulled it out and glanced down at the screen.
Just as she had expected, it was Ji Chicheng calling. She immediately hung up and locked the screen.
Right as she was about to set it to silent mode, the ringtone sounded again, startling her so much she nearly dropped the phone. She hung up quickly, then turned her back and, with the phone facing away from the old man, unlocked the screen.
"I’ve arrived."
Seeing the message Ji Chicheng had sent her, she gritted her teeth and replied angrily, "Don’t call me. I’m with Grandfather right now."
Before she could send the message, the old man beside her suddenly asked in confusion, "Anning, why aren’t you answering the phone?"
"Uh!"
Ji Anning’s hand shook, and she quickly locked her phone screen, almost as a reflex.
"It’s alright to answer."
The old man thought she was afraid to take the call because he was beside her.
Ji Anning smiled and shook her head, "It’s a nuisance call."
Fearing he wouldn’t believe her, she added, "Probably a scam."
Her words had barely faded when the old man’s phone in his hand began to ring.
He glanced at the caller ID, then chuckled while turning to Ji Anning, "It’s your uncle calling."
At those words, Ji Anning’s heart leapt to her throat, nearly jumping out.
The grandfather had already picked up the call, chatting with Ji Chicheng, "Chicheng, have you arrived in N City yet?"
Ji Anning had no idea what Ji Chicheng would say to the old man, nervously watching his expression and holding her breath.
"Yes, I just got back from Lin County and stopped by the dock to pick up Anning. Thought I’d take her to the company for a visit."
"Good, I’ll pass her the phone."
While Ji Anning was tense, the old man suddenly handed her the phone, "Anning, your uncle wants you. Says there’s a bit of business at the school he needs your help with."
Ji Anning was dumbfounded. Her hands trembled slightly as she extended them toward the phone.
She cursed Ji Chicheng inwardly, wishing she could fly to his side and strangle him, but she dare not show any change of expression on her face.
Struggling to find an excuse to refuse, she had no choice but to brace herself and take the phone from the old man’s hand. Seeing the name ’Chengcheng’ on the screen, her fingers tightened with hatred. If she had just a bit of Inner Strength, the old man’s phone would have been crushed.
She held the phone to her ear, fearing the old man would hear what Ji Chicheng had to say, pressing the earpiece tightly against her ear as she tried to remain composed, "Uncle."
