Chapter 327 - 209: Pedro Langley Is Just a Scumbag
Humphrey Jennings was her unexpected "chef".
To be precise, he was discovered by Benjamin Durant.
Three years ago, the Tofu Shop was just operated by a few random people, and their tofu pudding was sold just like any other shop. Humphrey Jennings had been retired for a year, and like Nora Scott was in the same trade, both working as bodyguards on the Northwest Line.
They met during a business deal.
At first, they didn’t get along, but during the deal, they encountered some danger and formed a bond over life-and-death experiences, developing a mutual respect afterwards.
Later on, Nora Scott invited Humphrey Jennings to the shop, and he ran into a visiting Benjamin Durant. The two had a disagreement and started arguing.
At that time, Nora Scott wasn’t there. When she received the news that "the two were about to fight" and rushed to the shop, she found Benjamin Durant clinging to Humphrey Jennings’ leg, negotiating terms, saying he would do anything if Humphrey would agree to be their chef.
Eventually, the three of them made an arrangement: Humphrey Jennings was unwilling to go to Virtue Retreat, but was fine staying at the Tofu Shop, working at his own leisure. As for Benjamin Durant, he was determined to stay on as the server, constantly pleading with Nora Scott because of his impeccable skills in managing the shop.
And that’s how things were settled.
Nora Scott started the shop just for fun. With the two men’s arrival, she became the hands-off manager, leaving the shop to them. It didn’t matter if it profited or lost; if it profited, the three of them split the earnings, and if it lost, there was always Benjamin Durant, the Northwest Master, to cover the deficit.
— The daily earnings of Virtue Retreat, located diagonally across, could easily cover the Tofu Shop’s yearly losses.
"When are you leaving?"
After recounting this, the breakfast was nearing its end.
Humphrey Jennings’ skills were indeed top-notch. The breakfast he served was large enough for four or five people, yet the two of them managed to polish off about seventy to eighty percent of it.
Pedro Langley glanced at his phone and then looked outside, saying, "Now."
"Hmm?"
Nora Scott raised an eyebrow, a little skeptical.
At that moment, a young man in a pine-green uniform walked in, looked around the shop, and accurately landed his gaze on Pedro Langley, asking, "Is Mr. Langley here?"
"Yes." Pedro Langley wiped his fingers and said, "Give me two minutes."
"Yes," the young man nodded slightly and exited the door.
Nora Scott looked surprised and glanced outside, seeing a military jeep and a few men in uniform.
Recoiling her gaze, Nora Scott looked Pedro Langley up and down with interest, asking, "What kind of business are you discussing that requires talking to them?"
"A legal business."
Pedro Langley chuckled lightly, curled his lips, placed the car keys on the table, and pushed them in front of Nora Scott, saying, "Leave the car here; let’s have dinner tonight."
Nora Scott raised an eyebrow, "Did I say I’m free tonight?"
"Even if you’re not free tonight, you still have to eat."
"..."
Nora Scott was convinced by his logic.
"I’m leaving."
As Pedro Langley walked past her, he raised his hand and gently pressed down on her head, ruffling her soft hair.
With her eyes wide open, Nora Scott reached out to hit him, but Pedro Langley quickly withdrew his hand, making her swing into emptiness.
Pedro Langley smiled, looked down to meet her gaze, and then proceeded to head out the door.
Nora Scott leaned back, tilting her head to watch his back until Pedro Langley stepped out the door, then lazily retracted her gaze.
"Uncle, is he in trouble?"
As soon as Pedro Langley left, Benjamin Durant eagerly approached, wearing a schadenfreude smile.
Nora Scott shot him a sidelong glance without speaking. Her long legs stretched under the table, kicking the chair across from her, catching Benjamin Durant off guard, almost making him fall on his butt.
With his hand reaching back to grab the chair, he pulled himself upright again, staring at Nora Scott in disbelief, "Are you trying to murder me for his sake?"
Tilting her head, Nora Scott acted like she heard something fascinating, "Does it take planning to kill you?"
"..."
Benjamin Durant was shocked.
That familiar tone;
That familiar banter;
That familiar cutting sarcasm...
Did you forget all that when you were in front of that pretty boy?
"Are you two dating?" Settling steadily on the chair, Benjamin Durant placed a hand on the table, half-seriously but partially probing, "You never mentioned anything."
"No."
Eyes open wide, Benjamin Durant suddenly slapped the table, feigning anger, "He’s really something else! Flirting with you like that and not giving you a proper title?!"
Nora Scott: "..." Why does it feel like he’s mocking me?
"What’s it to you?"
Nora Scott tapped his long legs under the table.
Benjamin Durant, caught off guard, got hit right in the knee, immediately wincing in pain.
With tearful eyes, he looked earnestly, "You’re my uncle, how can I let a pretty boy like him deceive you? With his flowery words, I tell you, I stopped using those when I was eight..."
"Who’s the pretty boy?" Nora Scott glanced over, her eyes fierce, retorting sarcastically, "Look in the mirror, his face is not as white as yours."
