Chapter 268 A Surprise Visit
Chapter 268 A Surprise Visit
"Where is she?"
Molly, who was hurrying toward the columbarium, naturally halted when she heard the familiar, impatient voice.
Slowly tilting her head to the side, her eyes fell on the urn on Maxwell’s thigh, and she grimaced in realization.
However, she didn’t let her surprise show.
Feigning ignorance, she turned toward them with a small smile.
"Maxwell Kensington. I didn’t expect to see you here."
Maxwell’s eyes narrowed at her while his butler sneered irritably, "Master isn’t very patient. You know that, don’t you?"
"I have no reason to irritate the head of the Kensington family especially with this issue involving my Langford family." She nodded, her voice remaining stable as she shifted her gaze toward the butler.
The corners of the butler’s lips twitched, and he looked down at his master for a go-ahead.
Maxwell, however, lowered his eyes to the urn, caressing it gently before his words reached her ear a second time.
"Let’s not do this dance, Molly. We both know how terrible your entire Langford family is when it comes to dancing."
Lifting his eyes, the cold orbs pierced right through her as he snided, "Where is Lois Fletcher?"
Molly pursed her lips, massaging the back of her neck as she glanced around for a passing worker.
"Supposing you’re yet to do anything, she’s inside that urn you’re holding—in granulated form. Didn’t the cemetery worker who called me tell you that?"
Maxwell watched her for a moment before getting to his feet and handing the urn to his butler.
Molly straightened, quickly stepping backward as she hollered at him through gritted teeth, "I don’t think I want you stepping toward me."
His brows perked up briefly before he nodded in understanding. "Is that so? Then I’ll sit right back down if you tell me where your aunt is right now."
Her brows instantly knitted in confusion, her tongue subconsciously wetting her dry lower lip as she admitted, "I don’t know what you’ve heard, but Aunt Lois is dead."
She swallowed, her eyes dimming, "That punk, Jerry Sutton, hadn’t come to the hospital on time to claim her ashes, so I did it instead and stayed with her until he came."
"Why then would the cemetery worker describe a tall woman as the one who brought the ashes?" He pressed, his eyes not leaving hers.
She sighed, "Jerry Sutton is a douchebag. He didn’t bother with the funeral after dumping the urn here, I suspected he’d do such, so followed."
"Given that I’m five years older than Kelsie and had a mini growth spurt during that time which made me hit a peak height of 5’3, all I had to do was act older, and the cemetery bought it."
Maxwell’s jaw ticked, his eyes falling in disappointment. "You’re saying... she’s really dead?"
Relieved that he believed her, her tense shoulders relaxed, and she lowered her eyes solemnly.
"That day, Luca had found and engaged in a car chase with her. As she sped away from his hired helps, she rammed into a truck—or was it a trailer?"
"I don’t really remember because police never really covered it, but I know she didn’t die on the scene. She died at Haven Medical Center."
"I only found out about it when Luca told me he always knew the many enemies she made along the way would get her one of these days."
His eyes snapped toward her immediately. "So she was murdered?"
She bobbed her head in agreement.
"By who?"
"I don’t know."
His eyes darkened, and he began strutting toward the door.
Catching a hunch of where he was possibly heading, the corners of her lips twitched.
"Luca is not at the hospital."
"He was dining like a king the last time I was there. Why exactly would you prepare for him to return to Lioren so soon?" Maxwell gritted his teeth in annoyance.
She thinned her lips, not the least bit remorseful as she suggested, "I pushed him off a cliff a moment ago. I can take you there, but there’s a chance he’s either dead, immobilized, or paralyzed from the neck down."
"However, if for some reason he still happens to be alive... he should be on his way up already."
"Take me to him." Maxwell only contemplated for a moment before making that decision.
While she led him to the scene, Jett got to the apartment to find Kelsie sleeping in the living room.
"Daddy, don’t walk too loud!" A hush from Zade made him pause.
Lifting his eyes, he frowned slightly at the sight of four people towering over a sleeping Kelsie.
Tiptoeing toward them, he reached Zade and whispered back in confusion, "Mommy’s sleeping in the living room?"
Keira shrugged, worriedly lowering her ears closer to Kelsie’s chest.
This was similar to the times their mother would sleep for hours. But back then, there was a reason and she even took medication to curb it.
However, just a moment ago, all four of them had crowded Jesse at his computer as he googled if it was normal for a woman who got shot to sleep this much from medication.
"She’s not running a fever, isn’t slurring words in her sleep, and we can wake her up so it can’t possibly be brain damage or internal bleeding. Then..." Zade was speaking, his voice echoing with dread before Jesse cut him off with a snort.
"Stop scaring everyone, Zade. The doctor we chatted up online said it’s normal, she’s just going through pain management."
"I’m just saying... shouldn’t we have one of those doctors come live with us until Mommy is better?" Zade exhaled heavily, looking toward Jett.
Following his gaze, everyone else turned to him.
"Wait, there’s no room for a doctor to stay." Daniel suddenly spoke up.
"Daddy will find somewhere else for you to stay in the meantime," Zade quickly responded without glancing at him.
Daniel’s eyes twitched, and he placed a hand on Zade’s shoulder, squeezing it gently.
"That doesn’t sound bad at all. We father and son do need a private space to bond better."
Zade’s eyes immediately swelled with tears as he looked toward Jett pitifully.
Jett looked back in confusion, seriously wondering what exactly was going on.
He had just parted his lips to speak when a tired voice huffed, "Daniel, stop threatening my son."
Immediately, Zade’s eyes lit up and he shifted toward Kelsie In excitement.
"You’re awake, Mommy."
"I wasn’t sleeping, baby. I barely closed my eyes to rest them when your uncle saw me and decided to think the worst," Kelsie sighed, her eyes peeling up to leer at the cause of the misunderstanding.
Daniel faked a cough and scurried away.
Once he was gone, Jett took off his suit, folded it, and dropped it on the arm of the cushion before taking a seat beside her, lifting her foot to place it on his thigh.
"Keira, there’s a ranked game with a few of my friends. Would you be interested in joining us?" Daniel’s voice blared from the hallway a moment later.
"Yes! Wait for me!" Keira shouted in response, practically flying to his room.
"By the way, Jesse, you remember the milk you kept in the fridge for later?" Zade turned to Jesse as soon as age left.
Jesse’s brows narrowed, both hands slipping out of his pockets.
"You do know I’ll beat you up if you drank it, yes?"
Zade shrugged nonchalantly. "I know that. But do you also know—no matter how much you beat me up, the milk won’t transfer back to your belly at some point?"
Following this question, Zade erupted into a laughing fit.
But the laughter only lasted about three seconds before Jesse reached out to grab him and he bolted.
Watching them run around, Jett rubbed his brows tiredly. "We’re going to be in trouble when they’re teenagers."
Kelsie chuckled, nodding in agreement.
When it came to Jesse, the house would be calm, but Keira and Zade not only teased each other all the time—Zade had made it a habit to do the same to Jesse, and he always fell for it.
Just an hour ago, she had overheard Keira give Zade an earful not to drink the milk in the fridge, but she didn’t trust her brother enough to obey and hid the milk somewhere.
Since he knew Jesse wouldn’t find it in the fridge, Zade probably felt this was a good avenue to constitute to nuisance.
Kelsie recalled something and tilted her head back to peer up at Jett. "So, Laura came over today and might’ve spewed some nonsense about how Daniel is Zade’s dad."
Jett stared down at her and laughed. "That’s ridiculous. If anyone’s Daniel’s kid, it’s Keira. He even passed on his gaming addiction to her."
There was a brief silence before he heard her exhale tiredly.
"I wasn’t sure, but it seems my medications don’t just make me weak and drowsy... they heighten my sexual drive."
The words had just fallen when she found herself being lifted off the couch.
"And you’re just saying that?"
Wrapping her hands around his neck, her nose scrunched up in worry’s "But the kids..."
"Our room is soundproof. They won’t hear a thing."
As they hurried to their room, they had no idea a certain man from the Reed family had his ear pressed tightly against the door, listening to everything.
