Chapter 60
Chapter 60
When Chang Ye woke up, her throat felt parched and her head ached slightly. As she opened her eyes and saw the ceiling, she was momentarily disoriented.
When she tried to move her hand, she found it was restrained. Turning her head, she realized Zhou Yi was lying beside her, firmly grasping her hand, curled up like a shrimp ball.
For a moment, Chang Ye thought they had returned to the past, or that she was dreaming.
Just then, Zhou Yi stirred and slowly opened her eyes.
Seeing Chang Ye awake, Zhou Yi immediately let go of her hand and sat up. "I'm sorry, you were drunk last night, so I brought you up here. Then... I don't know how, but I fell asleep too..."
"Oh..." Chang Ye withdrew her hand and looked at herself, noticing her coat was still on properly. "Maybe you were too tired. After all, you have so much to do. What time is it..."
"This morning... I'm not busy, don't need to go to the office..." Inexplicably, Zhou Yi blurted out.
Chang Ye turned to look at her, and after a moment, nodded. "That's good, you can rest properly."
"Mm. You should take a shower first. I'll... find some clothes for you." Zhou Yi sat on the edge of the bed.
Strangely, although Chang Ye could have said she'd shower when she got home, she ended up nodding.
So Zhou Yi stood up, opened the closet, rummaged around, and took out a white silk slip dress. She also took a pair of disposable underwear from a box she often used when traveling, and handed them to Chang Ye.
"Thank you, I'll go shower then." Chang Ye took the items and sat on the edge of the bed.
"Okay," Zhou Yi nodded, then paused. "Wait, what do you want to eat?"
"Just... anything is fine." Chang Ye said.
"Mm." Zhou Yi nodded, then opened the bedroom door and walked out.
After carefully tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, Chang Ye got up from the bed and went to the bathroom.
Closing the door behind her, Zhou Yi stood there for a moment, lost in thought. She and Chang Ye were like a pair of bickering lovers, always appearing fine in front of others but constantly arguing in private. They would fight, poke at each other's vulnerabilities, give each other the cold shoulder, then awkwardly find reasons to make up.
But never had it been as serious as this time, actually breaking up and even losing the right to comfort each other.
Lowering her head, Zhou Yi slowly went downstairs, only to find Meng Meng fast asleep on the floor between the sofa and coffee table.
Zhou Yi walked over, crouched down, and patted Meng Meng's shoulder. "Stop sleeping, get up."
After Zhou Yi's patting, it took a while before Meng Meng gradually opened her eyes and let out a small yawn.
"Good morning... Wait, didn't you say you'd be back by midnight? You just got back?" Meng Meng struggled to get up from the floor, yawning as she checked her phone. Seeing it was already past eight, she was suddenly wide awake.
"Uh..." Zhou Yi didn't answer, just walked to the side, picked up her bag, unzipped it, took out a small pouch, turned back and handed it to Meng Meng. "Your gift, happy belated birthday. Take it."
"Okay! Thank you! Wow, it's beautiful, you're the best!" Meng Meng took it, pulled out the box and opened it to reveal a pair of sparkling earrings. She was so excited she wanted to hug and kiss Zhou Yi.
However, Zhou Yi reflexively covered Meng Meng's mouth with her hand, pushing her head away slightly.
"Alright, no kissing, really... Oh, I have to go, damn, I need to work overtime!" Meng Meng stuffed the gift into her bag, continuing to yawn. "Gotta work to buy a house..."
"I've told you, I can give you an apartment. Why work so hard?" Zhou Yi said, picking up her phone to call for housekeeping.
"No way, my principles won't allow me to be a freeloader!" Meng Meng said, then slung her bag over her shoulder and hurried out. "Bye! Let's hang out when we're free!"
Then Meng Meng opened the door and left.
Zhou Yi glanced at her retreating figure, then put down her phone and walked to the kitchen.
A while later, the breakfast Zhou Yi ordered arrived along with the cleaning lady.
Since it was inconvenient downstairs, Zhou Yi brought the food back to the bedroom. Just then, Chang Ye came out of the bathroom, having just dried her hair.
Not wearing a bra, Chang Ye had to part her hair and drape it over her chest to cover herself.
"After I shower, I'll wash and dry our clothes together," Zhou Yi said, opening the curtains and placing the food on the small white table on the balcony, untying the plastic bags.
"Okay," Chang Ye nodded.
"Well, you eat first. I'll go wash up," Zhou Yi pulled out a chair.
"Mm," Chang Ye walked over and sat down on the balcony.
She glanced at Zhou Yi's retreating figure, then looked at the small garden outside the balcony. With nature awakening, the green plants looked vibrant. The scent of flowers mingled with the smell of fresh grass, creating a refreshing atmosphere.
Opening all the breakfast boxes, she saw two waffles with strawberry sauce, two matcha mousse cups, and two matcha lattes.
All were flavors she liked, but none were Zhou Yi's favorites. Zhou Yi didn't like strawberries, including strawberry sauce. As for matcha, Zhou Yi always claimed it tasted no different from toothpaste.
Picking up a fork, Chang Ye took a bite of waffle, swallowed, then sipped some latte. She pressed her lips together, looked out at the balcony, and slowly let out a breath.
About ten minutes later, Zhou Yi came out of the bathroom wearing a loose champagne-colored slip dress.
"I didn't expect you'd come to Meng Meng's birthday party," Zhou Yi finally spoke.
"I mainly came to see Tang You'an and Song Xici," Chang Ye said.
"Them?" Zhou Yi looked up at her.
"Mm, seems they've offended someone," Chang Ye nodded.
"What exactly happened?" Zhou Yi asked.
Considering Zhou Yi's good relationship with Song Xici and Meng Meng, and that if she couldn't fix the device, she might need Zhou Yi's help, at which point everyone would know what was inside, Chang Ye put down her spoon and explained the situation to Zhou Yi.
After listening, Zhou Yi looked at the waffles on the table. "Then... if you can't fix it, come to me."
"Okay," Chang Ye nodded and took another bite of mousse.
Usually, she could solve these things in less than ten minutes. But today, she was eating very slowly, from when Zhou Yi started showering until now.
"Should we... exchange contact information? It might be better," Zhou Yi took a sip of milk tea and looked up at her.
Chang Ye, wearing the white slip dress, had skin like polished jade. Her hair was parted into two sections covering her chest, giving her a gentle beauty.
"Alright," Chang Ye nodded and gave her WeChat ID.
"What about... your phone number?" Zhou Yi sent a friend request and looked at her. "Mainly because sometimes WeChat messages aren't seen immediately. If there's something urgent, a phone call would be more convenient."
"I suppose that makes sense," Chang Ye nodded after hearing this and gave her phone number.
Zhou Yi held her phone, pretending to note it down. In fact, she had long ago obtained Chang Ye's contact information, including her address. She just worried Chang Ye would resent her for doing so.
But now, having obtained it properly, at least she could rightfully send messages and such.
A while later, Chang Ye's clothes were dry. She reached out to feel them, then turned to Zhou Yi: "The clothes are dry, so I... should head back. I have a livestream at noon."
Hearing this, Zhou Yi could only nod. "Then let me drive you back."
"That's not necessary..." Chang Ye thought of how run-down her neighborhood was and didn't want Zhou Yi to see it. She really didn't want Zhou Yi to see more of her in such a sorry state.
"Let me drive you," Zhou Yi quickly said again. "Since I can take you, why bother calling another car?"
Chang Ye lowered her head, thinking for a good while before finally nodding. After all, she couldn't find any other reason to refuse.
In the end, Chang Ye got into Zhou Yi's car. The car had an air freshener with a faint jasmine scent, similar to the top notes of a perfume Chang Ye used to like long ago.
How long had it been since Zhou Yi had driven her? A very, very long time.
Soon, the car arrived at Chang Ye's residential area and stopped in front of a very old building.
"I'm here," Chang Ye said, unbuckling her seatbelt and nodding slightly to Zhou Yi.
"Oh..." Zhou Yi nodded, one hand still on the steering wheel.
"Thank you, goodbye." After unbuckling, Chang Ye opened the car door and got out.
Watching Chang Ye leave, Zhou Yi hesitated for a second, then quickly opened her door and got out too.
"Um... I'm sorry." Zhou Yi called out to Chang Ye, and when she turned around, Zhou Yi looked at her and finally said these words face to face.
Chang Ye was stunned, twisting her fingers before finally smiling. "It's all in the past. Actually... thinking about it now, it doesn't matter who's sorry. It's just that some people's personalities aren't suitable for being lovers, they're better as friends. Once they become lovers, it's easy for friction to occur."
"So..." Chang Ye looked at her, "that's why they say sometimes friendship lasts longer than love."
Hearing these words, Zhou Yi let out a breath, lowering her eyes to the ground. For a long time, neither of them spoke.
"Well... I'll go up now?" Chang Ye finally pointed at the building.
"Then, would you... be willing to be friends with me again?" Zhou Yi suddenly looked up at her. "You know, eating together, taking walks, chatting, watching movies, listening to music during free time..."
In the sunlight, Zhou Yi's eyes seemed to be filled with a faint mist, and there was a hint of something almost like a plea in them.
