Chapter 209: Beautiful, Dreamlike
Chapter 209: Beautiful, Dreamlike
Jean Kensington walked over to the two of them with a happy expression and sat down next to Chloe Sterling.
"What’s got you so happy?" Chloe Sterling asked, glancing at her.
Jean Kensington replied, looking relieved, "Silas Coldwell is finally gone. He won’t have time to bother with me anymore."
"This doesn’t have anything to do with you, does it? Did you pull some strings?"
"No, how could it be me? I’ve been too busy hiding my identity these past couple of days to have the energy for anything else. But the problem he’s dealing with this time seems pretty tricky."
"How do you know?" Chase Langdon suddenly asked. "Did you look into it?"
Jean Kensington replied, "Of course. Otherwise, do you think I’d be this relaxed? I’m guessing Silas Coldwell won’t be back for a while."
Chloe Sterling murmured, "Then it seems the situation really isn’t simple."
Jean Kensington nodded. "Mm-hm. He’s been hanging around Crestfall for months without showing his face at headquarters. Of course things would get messy over there. But with Silas Coldwell’s brutal methods, I doubt those people will get very far. They’ll probably die horribly."
"True."
Chloe Sterling was inclined to agree. After all, she had seen it with her own eyes, and those incidents had made her realize that she and Silas Coldwell were not cut from the same cloth.
Chase Langdon said, "Why didn’t you bring the baby over? Is he with your uncle again?"
Jean Kensington’s lips curved. "Yep. Anyone who didn’t know better would think he’s the baby’s father, the way he’s always with him."
"The Sinclair Group must be really busy lately, right? Your uncle still has time to look after the baby?"
"It’s not too bad. Anyway, my uncle is only in charge of gathering intel—he gets everything done on one computer. The baby likes computers too, so the two of them are always researching things together."
Chloe Sterling asked, "Shouldn’t your uncle be staying at the Sinclair Residence lately?"
"Yeah, he is at the Sinclair Residence. They’re both at the Sinclair Residence." As if struck by a thought, Jean Kensington added, "Hey, does this mean my son and my uncle are both working for Tristan Sinclair? Shouldn’t he be paying them two salaries?"
Chloe Sterling chuckled lightly. "You could go and ask him for it."
"He’d probably just glare at me and tell me to get lost." After a pause, Jean Kensington added, "Still, it doesn’t seem quite right for my uncle to always be taking the baby to the Sinclair Residence. I think I’ll go pick him up later."
Chase Langdon immediately suggested, "Have him come to the martial arts gym. I’ll teach him some moves and keep an eye on him."
Jean Kensington nodded. "Yeah, that could work. I don’t have much going on today anyway. How about I go get him now?"
"Sounds good," Chase Langdon said. "I’ll go with you. The weather’s turning bad; it might snow later."
"Okay."
Chase Langdon turned to Chloe Sterling. "Chloe, you keep an eye on things here."
Chloe Sterling: ".......Alright."
The two of them stood up and left.
Seeing the bad weather, Jean Kensington worried it really would start snowing, so she decided to go home first and grab a thicker down jacket for the baby.
The car was parked upstairs. Jean Kensington said, "I can just go up by myself. You wait here in the car. I’ll be right back down after I grab the clothes."
"Okay, I’ll wait for you," Chase Langdon replied.
Jean Kensington got out of the car, hurried into the apartment building, and took the elevator upstairs.
In the hallway, Chloe Kensington was waiting, her face grim. "You’re finally back."
Jean Kensington’s expression turned cold in an instant. "What are you doing here?"
Chloe Kensington snorted. "You think I wanted to come? Dad sent me. He said if you have time, you should bring that little bastard of yours home for a visit. But I guess you don’t have the guts to show your face, do you?"
Jean Kensington walked up to her and, without warning, slapped her across the face.
Caught completely off guard, Chloe Kensington took the full force of the slap. Cupping her cheek, she roared, "Bitch! Are you insane?"
Jean Kensington fixed her with a sharp, cold gaze. "Chloe Kensington, if you dare insult my son again, it won’t be as simple as just a slap! And another thing, I’m not going back. Not because I’m ashamed, but because I don’t want to see you pieces of trash."
Chloe Kensington glared back, grinding her teeth. "Suit yourself. You’d better have some backbone and stay away for the rest of your life."
Jean Kensington sneered. "Don’t worry. I wouldn’t go back even if you all got on your knees and begged me."
"I heard you’ve been getting close to President Sinclair again. Jean Kensington, get a grip. President Sinclair didn’t even give you the time of day before, and now you have a child. You really think he’d give you a second glance?"
"I don’t know if he’s willing to look at me or not. But I’m sure he’s not willing to see the daughter of a homewrecker like you."
At that, Chloe Kensington’s face turned ashen. "Jean Kensington, shut your damn mouth! My mom and dad were in love! They were meant to be together. Marrying your mom was something he was forced into."
Jean Kensington scoffed, unwilling to waste any more words on her. She opened the door and went inside.
Shut outside the door, Chloe Kensington was furious. ’If Dad hadn’t insisted I come, I couldn’t be bothered to see that bitch!’
"I’ve delivered the message! You’re the one who said you wouldn’t go back, so don’t come crawling back later and make a fool of yourself!"
After shouting at the closed door, she stormed off in a rage.
Downstairs, Chase Langdon, sitting in the car, noticed Chloe Kensington emerging from the building with a sullen look on her face. He frowned slightly. ’She’s here?’
Chloe Kensington got in her car and left. A little while later, Jean Kensington came out with the clothes and got back in the car.
"I just saw one of the Kensingtons come out of there. Were they here to see you?" Chase Langdon asked.
Jean Kensington just grunted in response. "The sky is so gloomy. Figures it wouldn’t be a good day."
"Did she come looking for trouble?"
"Not really. Let’s not talk about her. Let’s go."
"Alright." Chase Langdon didn’t press further and started the car.
Before long, snowflakes indeed began to drift down from the sky, dancing through the air with a touch of magic.
"It’s really snowing." Jean Kensington’s lips curved into a smile. She cracked open the window and held her hand out. A few snowflakes fluttered in, some landing in her palm only to melt in an instant, as fleeting as a night-blooming cereus.
Chase Langdon kept his eyes on the road. "It’s coming down pretty hard. The roads are already white. Do you like the snow?"
"Mmm," Jean Kensington said. "It’s a little cold, but it’s so beautiful. Especially when the whole world is covered in white. I think it’s quite magical."
"It is. Very beautiful, very magical." As he spoke, Chase Langdon smiled and added, "But what I like even more is eating hot pot on a snowy day. Chloe loves it too."
"I love that too," Jean Kensington said. "Should we get hot pot tonight?"
Chase Langdon grinned. "I was just about to suggest it."
The snowy roads were slippery, and it took them an hour to reach the gate of the Sinclair Residence.
Jean Kensington had already given Dean Lynch a heads-up. She took out her phone and called him. "Uncle, I’m at the gate. Can you bring the baby out? I won’t come in."
On the other end, Dean Lynch said, "Okay, just give me a minute."
"Okay, I’ll wait for you two at the gate."
After hanging up, Jean Kensington pushed open the car door, scooped up a handful of snow, and packed it into a ball. With a mischievous grin, she threw it at Chase Langdon, who had just gotten out of the car. The snowball burst against his shoulder, spattering his face with flecks of white.
"Haha, just wanted you to feel how cold the first snow of the year is."
Chase Langdon’s smile was fond and indulgent. "It’s fine. Not cold at all."
