Chapter 1545 - 828: Homecoming (Part 2)
Ruiz drank wine and contemplated for a while before saying: "Just going on vacation..."
Jimmy: "Maybe we'll hunt, fish, or even plant some potatoes or flowers, you know, we all love being farmers..."
Ruiz: "Hunt, huh? Any targets?"
Jimmy: "No specific targets, whatever we encounter will be fine, you know me, there definitely won't be anything dangerous."
Ruiz: "Alright, it seems the vacation has indeed put you in a good mood, enjoy the city life, I'll be heading back first."
After saying that, Ruiz put down the glass, stood up, buttoned his coat, and left the room without looking back, not even bothering to close the door.
Jimmy got up to see him off and then returned to the couch. The music and chatter from outside seeped in, but he wasn't in a rush to leave. The conversation with Ruiz was firm, as he had planned beforehand.
Actually, he had tolerated things before, considering going to the Dark Tower World required time, and that it was a convenient excuse, plus he didn't need to work, saving him a lot of trouble. But upon returning, Nia's suspicions of being monitored and other matters sparked some ideas in him, maybe there would be gains beyond patience.
No need to worry about Ruiz having too many negative thoughts, just like he said before, questioning what Jimmy wanted, why not just say it out loud, a sign that he was already pondering possibilities, and had prepared for various outcomes. Jimmy only gave him a vague answer, leaving the rest to see how things would unfold.
Regarding his relationship with Ruiz, frankly, after these several treatments aimed at Jimmy, he still managed to maintain his current state without causing trouble, showing much restraint. Ruiz will come to understand, and this wouldn't affect their personal relationship, though their colleague relationship would certainly undergo some changes.
"Is everything okay?" Nia asked as she approached with little Liam, who had cried upstairs after waking from a nap. Jimmy threw himself onto the couch, and she walked over to him.
Jimmy reached out to hold the little one, "Nothing much, little Liam, why were you crying? Did you miss dad because you didn't see me just now?"
Nia looked at Jimmy, clearly sensing things weren't as fine as he said, his expression earlier wasn't indicative of everything being okay, but it seemed Jimmy didn't want to bring his issues home.
"So when are you going back to work? You've been off for more than a month. Ruiz and the others... won't they mind?"
Jimmy waved a hand behind Liam's head, "Don't worry, I'll handle work. Taking a month off isn't a big deal, no problem."
Nia watched Jimmy happily playing with his son, as if nothing happened, but couldn't help frowning privately.
After resting at home for a few days, Jimmy finally decided to temporarily leave Liam behind and go out casually dressed to see Roland.
Before leaving that day, Jimmy warned Roland there might be something unexpected here, so Roland didn't contact Jimmy these days. Walking miles back to the Upper East Side from far away from Jimmy's house was no big deal for him.
With confirmation from the Mage, at least during the time Jimmy was in the Dark Tower World, the energy imbalance wasn't resolved. It might require a longer stay to affect the imbalance, or maybe using Merlin's Rainbow wouldn't affect the Dark Tower World for Jimmy and Roland.
Regardless, it's almost certain there's no need for Jimmy to go back for now, and what's left is the promised trip with Nia. They're accustomed to modern convenience, so long-term residence there isn't possible, treating Jimmy and the others as Earth's gatekeepers would do.
Jimmy had a brief chat with Roland, who planned to leave in about half a month, now just awaiting deliveries after placing orders.
Jimmy didn't mind not needing to go back with Roland for now. As long as he goes when Nia does, it's fine, and he could return anytime, focusing on protecting Nia and not worrying about other matters for now.
After confirming there were no issues here, Jimmy began arranging his affairs. Going to work was still necessary to ensure his presence wasn't forgotten, and it provided a chance to contact Hank to check Gus's court schedule.
The process from investigation completion to prosecutor filing charges, to judge sentencing takes a long time. Detention for months isn't impossible, providing an opportunity to earn bail money. Numerous companies nationwide in the United States provide bail services, and should anyone abscond during the bail phase, besides company recovery, licensed bounty hunters are employed for pursuit.
Although the preliminary hearing set bail for Gus and the others, neither Gus nor Mike opted to abscond. Jimmy confirmed this when contacting Hank; they seemed intent on spending several years in jail.
Jimmy couldn't help but maliciously speculate that his actions in Mexico might have cast some shadow on Gus. Normally, a major drug lord wouldn't want incarceration, not only hindering earnings but risking incidents with adversaries in prison.
Gus still has a lot of cash and laundered money, along with his network. It's easy to leave comfortably. The reluctance to leave is probably fear of dying.
After scheduling a time to observe proceedings with Hank, Jimmy started handling ticket-related formalities, besides needing to request leave at Ruiz's office.
This time the leave was openly requested. Jimmy was tasked with settling the case, and although most credit went to the DEA, he secured quite a bit of benefits.
Actually, it serves as a contrast to his disappearance earlier. At least for now, Ruiz's attitude hasn't changed, simply inquiring about Jimmy's plans, upon confirming it's due to business in Albuquerque, granted leave promptly, even adding extra days.
Alright, it appears Ruiz realized regardless of Jimmy's actions, he wouldn't be one of Jimmy's targets. Since it doesn't concern him, whatever, letting Jimmy handle things himself works, unless he gets fired.
Jimmy departed New York again, but not alone this time; Nia accompanied him. As for the house, Roland had already stated he'd be the appointed housekeeper to prevent accidents. It's tough to enter the basement under Roland's guard without issue.
Dave knew Jimmy returned for a few days, investigated thoroughly, ensuring no incidents occurred before relaxing. But when he visited Jimmy's office, it was already too late.
Taking Nia and the child to Albuquerque compensates for neglecting them earlier during this period. Fortunately, the child was old enough to fly. Otherwise, Nia would struggle to go out.
Hank didn't mind, but his wife Mary was very excited seeing Nia holding little Liam. Walter White's family had left Albuquerque, relieving Hank of some concerns.
