Chapter 1474 793: Struck the Small One
After Jimmy left the tree, the piercing sound rapidly diminished, soon becoming almost inaudible.
This definitely wasn't right. Clearly, there was something wrong with the tree, or something problematic inside the tree. Now the sound slowly disappearing didn't mean the other party was eliminated. Jimmy was still worried the entity would escape. He took a couple of breaths to suppress the feeling of nausea, clamped the dagger handle between his teeth, and readied his revolver before pressing the exorcism badge against the tree once more.
This time, there was finally some movement. Although that nauseating, piercing sound remained, something resembling fog began to seep out from around the base of the tree in Heart Eye Vision. The color was very faint, as if the tree was wearing a cloak made of fog. Soon, the fog drifted upwards, gathering about two or three meters up from the trunk, forming into a fog mass suspended in the air.
After the fog left the trunk, the piercing sound slowly vanished. Jimmy looked up at the fog mass in the air, raising his left hand's revolver to fire two shots.
The reason he didn't empty the cylinder was because the fog was very peculiar. In all the supernatural incidents Jimmy had encountered before, the protagonists invariably had white spots—big or small, few or many—that indicated the target's weak points. But now, this fog mass was purely fog. And he noticed the fog was completely invisible in real vision, only visible through Heart Eye Vision.
The fog mass didn't remain still. Jimmy's two shots passed through the middle of the fog, only stirring some internal fog movement, with some drifting out from the holes above the trajectory, yielding no further results.
The fog mass apparently had some intelligence, and it had identified Jimmy, the one who had provoked it. After meandering in the air, it suddenly accelerated and changed direction, charging at Jimmy like a fog serpent.
Jimmy quickly bent and dashed to the side, rolling on the ground before hitting the middle section of the fog serpent with his right hand holding the exorcism badge, breaking the fog serpent apart. But this was fundamentally ineffective. Once separated, the front segment quickly turned back and merged with the rear again.
This thing seemed hard to handle. Jimmy's left hand's revolver dropped as he grabbed the dagger from his mouth, swapping it with the exorcism badge in his right hand. Now gripping the dagger with his right hand and the exorcism badge with his left, he assumed a combat stance as the fog serpent in the air reformed into a whole, once again charging at Jimmy.
Although Jimmy wasn't lacking in close combat skills, the fog serpent was evidently not a suitable opponent for close-range fighting. None of Jimmy's attacks received any feedback, making it feel like he was punching and slashing at thin air, making his actions appear extremely awkward, as if he had gone mad.
From a distance, Cage watched Jimmy seemingly going mad, attacking the air, while calling Royte the Priest. He couldn't see Jimmy's opponent at all.
Cage had participated in exorcism ceremonies conducted by Royte the Priest, so when Jimmy had just shouted for him to call Royte, he immediately took out his phone. Jimmy's actions were very strange. Excluding the possibility that Jimmy had suddenly gone crazy, it was clear he was encountering something invisible to Cage—something Cage couldn't deal with.
When Royte the Priest received Cage's call, he was also quite surprised, but Cage's tone was extremely urgent. Obviously, it wasn't the time for questions. After confirming the location, he grabbed his case and left the church for the shore. However, since he was in the city, it would take him some time to get there. While on the way, he called Cage again. As Cage watched Jimmy, he described the scene to Royte, providing a live commentary on Jimmy's frenzy.
Jimmy didn't want to go berserk, but he really didn't want the bizarre fog serpent to attack him. Who knew what kind of trouble this thing might cause? So aside from repeatedly attacking to break the fog serpent's body, he had to dodge left and right and even roll on the ground, as the fog serpent was too agile. Even if it was broken into sections, it still had the ability to move, especially the barely visible head. If not for Jimmy's agility, he would have already been hit multiple times.
However, Jimmy had overlooked an issue. Because the fog serpent was shattered into too many pieces, some dispersed fog had already surrounded him. His focus was entirely on the segments, and by the time he realized the problem, it was too late.
The fog serpent seemed to receive some command, and the segments suddenly gained independent awareness, winding towards Jimmy. Together with the previous fog, they formed a fog chain coiling around him. Fortunately, he quickly positioned his dagger in front of him, severing the chain across his chest, and then used his left-hand exorcism badge to block the head charging at his face, punching it into oblivion.
As the head disappeared, the fog chain wrapped around Jimmy gradually faded. After carefully inspecting his surroundings and finding no abnormalities, Jimmy breathed a sigh of relief, walked over, and picked up the revolver he had dropped, reloading the two spent bullets.
The serpent was clearly not Jimmy's ultimate target. He hadn't found any weak points on the fog serpent, and its final dissipation was unexpected, especially since previous attacks with his left hand had merely dispersed it and not caused a direct kill.
