Chapter 1434 773: Handover (Part 2)
Jimmy frowned and asked, "Why? I've been investigating for over a month..."
Dave: "But there's been no closure, and people connected to the case are still dying one after another. Give it up. Although it might affect you a bit, it's better than getting dragged down by this case. The key point is, you're on your own, and there are so many intertwined cases now that you can't possibly follow up on all of them."
Jimmy: "Then bring in a few from the Los Angeles office for me. I believe I can handle it."
Dave: "Alright, I know you're unwilling, but this is what the headquarters wants. There are plenty of personnel in Los Angeles, and it's good for everyone if they take charge. Don't forget that Harriton and the others were originally serving certain individuals here."
Jimmy: "But why are they in such a hurry for me to transfer the case? There's no preparation at all."
Dave glanced around and said in a low voice, "Remember I told you Harriton is just a puppet for someone? That person was attacked last night. Thankfully, due to the incident involving Harriton's wife, he temporarily adjusted his security, so he only got frightened and suffered a minor injury from a fall, but his life isn't in danger."
Jimmy stared wide-eyed at Dave: "Why was I not informed of such a major event? This is a crucial clue, possibly leading to the mastermind."
Dave shook his head: "This should be handled by California. Let them deal with it. People from the Los Angeles office have already protested to headquarters, and they'll take over this series of cases. I know you've worked hard, but... that's that. There's a meeting soon, and you need to present the current progress of your investigation and hand over all the materials to them."
Dave patted Jimmy's arm, "Don't get too involved. The outcome of some things might not be satisfactory, but as long as you protect yourself, that's enough."
Jimmy nodded, realizing his stint was coming to an end. Well, it's a good time to see Roland: "Alright. By the way, I need a vacation; I've been too busy recently. I'm thinking..."
Dave: "No problem, a month off, is that enough?"
Jimmy smiled: "More than enough, thanks, I'll get ready now."
Dave nodded and left the room. Jimmy opened his bag and pulled out his laptop and notebook, going through the contents again.
He hadn't expected anyone to take over the entire case. Normally, he would submit a report, and if the mastermind couldn't be found, the case would be shelved. The FBI has many of these archived cases, some even unsolved for decades.
Now, he had to transfer all his unfinished reports and materials, so he must check carefully to avoid exposing himself and prevent others from thinking he hadn't done his best.
In a big conference room, more than a dozen people were seated. Dave and an elderly man with white hair sat at the front, presumably the Los Angeles office head. The rest didn't seem young either, indicating the seriousness of the matter.
A person seated behind Dave and the others stood up: "I'm Assistant Agent Supervisor Wade Williams, in charge of this case handover."
Jimmy shook hands with him. After Williams introduced everyone present, Jimmy connected his laptop to the projector and started presenting his investigation progress.
Since he hadn't prepared in advance, all his materials were on the computer, including photos taken at the Miami port and the private island, interrogation reports, etc. It took a long time to demonstrate and explain everything. After several breaks, he finally completed the presentation in the afternoon. As for the handover, it involved organizing and copying all his computer materials, including classifications, testimonies, and his report, for them.
Not everyone at the meeting appreciated Jimmy's solo investigation, but as the presentation progressed, they had to acknowledge that it was no arbitrary decision by headquarters to have Jimmy spearhead the yacht explosion case. His investigation of the private island was very thorough, especially with his discovery of the person installing the explosives. The only regret was the poor quality of the surveillance video, making it impossible to identify the person's appearance and issue a targeted wanted notice.
However, the discovery of the missing security guard's body was undeniably Jimmy's achievement, indirectly confirming the assailant's route on the island and sketching a very reasonable modus operandi.
Jimmy's investigation in Los Angeles, given the absence of other clues, was the only direction to pursue at the time.
Jimmy provided personnel information and lists repeatedly given by Mrs. Harriton, documents from both her and Sebastian, sufficient to prove his efforts during this period. Unfortunately, due to Mrs. Harriton's murder, he couldn't continue expanding his investigation content, but his investigative direction was fundamentally correct.
This detailed investigation report and evidence with testimonies and judgment basis of each stage were clear and straightforward. It was much better than being handed over with just raw data and evidence to be sorted later. In fact, if they were transferring data to someone else, they probably wouldn't be able to do it as calmly. Despite Jimmy's youth as a Chinese-American agent, he acted wisely and thoughtfully.
It was Dave's first time seeing all of Jimmy's investigation contents, which explained Jimmy's strong reaction to handing over the case materials. Anyone who had spent a month collecting so much information only to have it suddenly taken would certainly react angrily. Jimmy's cooperation in handover showed great respect for Dave's decision, not complicating matters for him.
He's a good guy, capable and obedient. Such a subordinate really makes things easier.
Jimmy spent the entire day transferring materials and answering other agents' questions about the evidence. Not until everyone was satisfied did he bid farewell to the Los Angeles office folks, leaving the office with Dave.
After having dinner with Dave, discussing behind-the-scenes stories not suited for paper records, Jimmy's investigation drew to a very imperfect conclusion.
The next day, Jimmy flew back to New York with Dave. After parting at JFK Airport, Jimmy finally returned to his long-absent home.
Last night, Jimmy called Nia, so there was no surprise visit this time. Upon arriving home, he found Nia tidying the room, taking care of her place after living alone for a month, albeit a bit messy.
Jimmy put down his suitcase, kissed Nia, and began helping tidy up while chatting about his work during this time. That night, while dining out, he started talking about Roland.
Three days had passed, but Jimmy's attempts to reach Roland by phone were unsuccessful. He planned to head to Maine if there was no news, even though Roland had advised against it. Now that he wasn't working, he was eager to see Roland.
However, he needed to consider Nia's opinion since he had just returned after a month-long business trip and going to Maine immediately seemed inconsiderate. He planned to spend two days at home with Nia first.
After dinner, they went to a bar for a while before returning home. Once inside, they embraced, Jimmy nudging the door closed with his foot, shedding clothes while moving towards the room. Though it was a bit early and the apartment's soundproofing wasn't great, reuniting after a long separation meant Jimmy needed to put in some extra effort.
