Chapter 1415 764: Pause and Fishing
Chapter 1415 764: Pause and Fishing
Dave was on the phone with Jimmy late into the night, leaving him completely sleepless. This situation was a bit tricky, and it really had nothing to do with him in the first place; of course, he couldn't let this trouble fall on him.
After some thought, he picked up his phone and sent out several messages in a row, then waited for replies. At a certain level, even if someone doesn't have their phone on them, there's always an assistant or someone else holding it, ensuring they see the messages. He believed his number was certainly not irrelevant to people at this level.
Sure enough, soon after, he heard the notification sound of a reply. Dave glanced at it but didn't reply or call back.
The next morning, Dave didn't go to the office. Instead, he drove to a golf course in New Jersey.
After changing clothes, he grabbed his own golf club case and got on a golf cart to the course. While practicing and waiting for someone, two more carts arrived beside him. After dropping off people and equipment, they left.
"Nice weather today," said a middle-aged man around Dave's age, while an older man with white hair began pulling out his clubs to warm up.
Dave didn't respond but continued focusing on his target. With a powerful swing, the golf ball flew out and disappeared in an instant.
Dave placed his club on the ground with both hands and said to the two of them, "Yes, nice weather. I hope you're in a good mood now."
The old man, stretching his limbs, asked, "Seems like there's some bad news. Go ahead, Dave."
Dave: "Over at Harriton, I hope you can pause all activities for now. In Los Angeles, two people died consecutively within a few days. Things have changed."
The old man stopped his warm-up and looked at Dave calmly, asking, "Who?"
Dave: "One attended a Harriton banquet, and the other was a shareholder of his Foundation. Both were connected to him."
The middle-aged man glanced at the old man and asked, "Has the Harriton matter been fully investigated?"
Dave: "Not yet. As I mentioned before, the people involved are too professional. The agents responsible for the investigation have combed through clues but haven't pinpointed a suspect. Now it seems the people behind it might be active again."
The old man: "Seems like it won't be easy. Colin, how much have they raised?"
The middle-aged man, Colin, said, "Maybe a few million, but it's just an estimate. The actual amount might be less."
The old man sighed, "Alright, let's think of other ways."
Colin: "It's not a big issue. The party's primary election period is still long; we still have a lot of advantages."
The old man shook his head, "This time is different, but let's go back and discuss with the others."
Dave didn't interrupt their conversation, just listened quietly.
The old man started stretching again, "Dave, your people... are they reliable?"
Dave shrugged, "Of course, he's the best."
The old man nodded, "I think maybe we should investigate further."
Dave shook his head, "That's Los Angeles. The Los Angeles office of the three major divisions is right there. If we were to intervene..."
The old man: "Let's try to think of another way."
This whole issue is essentially the competition among multiple candidates within the party. For someone in his kind of functional department, it doesn't have a direct impact. Factional struggles are fights among people at the top, and everyone else is a pawn. Even if unwilling, they have to align with their own faction.
New York and California are both traditional Blue States, but internal competition is always present. For some, there are only two or three main candidates. At this stage, they would want to eliminate opponents by all means necessary to ensure their own people advance to the final stage.
For them, the amount of funds raised somewhat determines the candidate's exposure and success rate. For the businessmen providing political donations, causing some trouble for them and delaying their funds ensure that after the primary elections, they have no choice but to support the winners.
In fact, besides the people from Harriton's circle over in Los Angeles, there were also two New Yorkers on the list Dave provided to Jimmy. These two were also provided by these people, appearing as "traitors" in the New York base. Giving them a "lesson" now might make them realize their wrongs and return to the faction.
This plan was executed upon the suggestion of advisors to certain bigwigs. For someone in a key position like Dave, it was meant to be something easily done with just a word, especially since it's Jimmy doing the work. There's no doubt about Jimmy's capability; he would surely get it done.
Now, because of this elusive professional assassin, two suspected murders have surfaced, completely derailing their previous plans. After all, they were from the same party and only intended to add some difficulties rather than harm. Who would have thought it would lead to deaths?
The old man and middle-aged Colin stopped discussing these matters and changed topics, chatting about other things. The three of them played for a while before leaving the club.
Dave wasn't just a mouthpiece for them. Now that the situation was evidently out of control, he needed to directly intervene in Jimmy's investigation, redirecting it towards those two deaths. Jimmy might not refuse, but he would definitely have opinions, especially since the yacht explosion they'd been investigating hadn't made any progress. Now shifting the focus to murder cases wasn't easy, especially since it's in Los Angeles. If they deviated from their original case for another, interference was inevitable.
