Chapter 1412 - 762: Dog Eat Dog (Part 2)
Jimmy shook hands and said, "FBI Supervisory Special Agent Jimmy Yang."
Sebastian gestured with his hand, "Please come in, Mrs. Harriton is temporarily unable to greet you, please forgive us."
Jimmy asked while walking, "What happened?"
Sebastian led the way slightly ahead and said, "Yesterday, while avoiding a wrong-way vehicle, Mrs. Harriton's car skidded off the road and overturned. After changing cars, there was a brake failure, crashing into a heavy truck, which delayed the afternoon meeting originally planned with you."
Jimmy: "Was Mrs. Harriton injured?"
Sebastian: "The injuries are not severe, but because she has a history of heart problems, the repeated stress caused complications, and an emergency surgery was arranged yesterday."
Jimmy: "Well, God bless her, but it's good she is okay. Why not at a hospital?"
Sebastian turned to look at Jimmy, then looked forward again, "Mrs. Harriton is at a secret hospital. It's not very convenient there, so we arranged a video conference. Please enter."
Jimmy and Sebastian entered a room, it was a study, but well-equipped inside. Sebastian turned on the monitor hanging on the wall and operated the computer beside it. Soon, a scene from a ward appeared on screen, with Mrs. Harriton lying in bed, and a man in a suit and sunglasses standing beside the bed.
Seeing Jimmy and Sebastian appear on the monitor in the ward, the man leaned forward and whispered something to Mrs. Harriton. Then he pressed a button beside the bed, and the upper part of the bed began to rise slightly, allowing Mrs. Harriton to lean against the bedhead to look at the camera. "Agent Yang, good morning."
Jimmy nodded: "Good morning, Mrs. Harriton. Are you feeling better?"
Mrs. Harriton: "Thank you for your concern, I am okay now. The reason I invited you over is to discuss my husband's case, but... I'm truly not able to speak much right now. I've given all the materials to Sebastian, hoping it helps your investigation."
Jimmy glanced at Sebastian, who picked up a briefcase from beside him, took out a few sheets of paper and handed them to Jimmy.
Jimmy glanced at them briefly and set them aside, then looked at the camera focused on Mrs. Harriton, "Mrs. Harriton, I have one more question to confirm with you. I've received a guest list from others, it was for the party before Mr. Harriton's incident. I want your help to see if they have any connection with Mr. Harriton."
Mrs. Harriton nodded, Jimmy read out four names provided by Dave. Mrs. Harriton only recognized two, from Los Angeles and San Francisco. After Jimmy thanked her, he said goodbye and left. Mrs. Harriton spoke only a few words and appeared noticeably fatigued. Evidently, even if Jimmy had questions, it wasn't convenient to ask now.
Still, something is strange about this. According to attorney Sebastian, Mrs. Harriton only experienced two car accidents. Although the stress caused heart issues, it shouldn't necessitate treatment in a secret hospital, and be inconvenient for her to meet people, right?
And he mentioned one more thing, Mrs. Harriton's car had a brake issue. Was this intentional?
Jimmy drove away from the mansion, wondering if this attorney was more complex than he seemed. Able to represent Mrs. Harriton and provide materials to Jimmy, he should be the Harriton Family's private attorney, likely very closely tied. Similar to a family's attorney in organized crime, these individuals are familiar with the secrets of the families they serve, extraordinarily capable, with broad networks, handling many private matters for them. In a sense, they represent the families they serve.
When Mrs. Harriton left the company that day, two bodyguards accompanied her. However, they weren't Jimmy's primary focus, so he wasn't clear if the man in the ward was one of them. If not, it would be interesting. Could the previous car accidents have temporarily reassigned them?
While driving, Jimmy received a call from Agent Wright. Outside, he found a print shop to provide a fax number, and soon got some documents faxed over.
The feeling of stirring things up everywhere was enjoyable. Now Jimmy delighted in it and listed all the people from Los Angeles on his visiting list, providing a clear source of leads for the names Dave provided.
The approach was straightforward. When visiting each person, Jimmy would bring out his notebook, first inquire about the party attendees, then cross-reference names he had pre-recorded. Not everyone remembers all names from such events, so unfamiliar ones would inevitably emerge. A mere mention by Jimmy could likely influence someone's impression of who attended.
After reaching out to several people, all four names Dave provided were added to Jimmy's list of leads. Additionally, he recorded on his notebook the origin of each name's appearance, ensuring that if questions arose later, the notebook would be his saving grace.
Jimmy acted swiftly. Since there was no specific target, meeting and communicating were enough to put up a front. Coupled with the precise contact detail and addresses from the FBI database and the individuals' other information, Jimmy rarely came up empty and mostly managed to meet face-to-face promptly.
In fact, Jimmy noticed a small detail. The Miami office's team responsible for kidnapping cases hadn't questioned individuals seen in the videos. Even those involved in clandestine activities with underage girls, appeared to focus solely on Harriton, avoiding broader inquiries.
This seemed somewhat excessive. After leaving that bothersome company, Jimmy didn't return to the hotel, instead lingering street-side for several hours, finally spotting a target license plate emerging from an underground garage, trailing it from a distance.
Driving the FBI's Suburban certainly posed some inconvenience. Yet, lacking a suitable vehicle, he had to make do. Thankfully, he wasn't planning to act openly, so there was no major issue. After all, this person attended the party and appeared in surveillance footage. If someone questioned Jimmy's tailing, he had an explanation—merely verifying leads, which was justifiable.
Eventually, the car arrived at an apartment building, the vile old man got out and entered the building, but the car stayed. Jimmy remained nearby, parked in front of a bakery, purchased some snacks, returned to the car, and continued waiting.
Soon, the old man exited the building and got back in the car, then left once more.
Exiting Los Angeles City, the car headed northwest, finally parking at a villa.
Jimmy didn't stop, passed them from behind and drove a bit further to park in a public parking lot, then walked to the villa nearby.
Here, already far from the city, the surveillance coverage wasn't so prevalent. Additionally, since it was now nighttime, darkness set in, casting limited light coverage over the area, giving Jimmy favorable conditions to navigate various obstacles.
Gloves, mask, sunglasses—Jimmy carried these items always, permitting simple disguises so no one would see his face in the dark.
Avoiding surveillance and sneaking into the villa posed no difficulty for Jimmy; ensuring no traces remained, he cautiously wiped away footprints, wearing gloves.
There was no one else in the villa, only a housekeeper. As for the driver, the car was no longer at the entrance, suggesting they must have left. Jimmy simply went upstairs, avoiding the housekeeper's sight on the ground floor.
