Chapter 1410 - 761: Clues and Encounters
Chapter 1410 - 761: Clues and Encounters
Had a quick conversation with Agent Wright over in Miami about his investigation into the port. It's part of the routine inquiries these days, but he already knew there wouldn't be any leads. In fact, Jimmy had given up on the investigation before.
Winston undeniably has some highly professional personnel at his disposal. Not to mention that planting explosives on a yacht without anyone noticing is no small feat. The precision required to detonate at sea isn't something just anyone can accomplish. Moreover, besides a trace of a clue on the island, there's been no definitive evidence pointing to the perpetrator, which further illustrates their level of organization.
If the perpetrator had cleared the traces alone, it certainly wouldn't have been this clean. Before or after the fact, someone meticulously planned the entire route to avoid the ubiquitous cameras and possible witnesses. It's important to note that the explosion occurred in the morning, when although not at the peak, the port certainly wasn't as empty as nighttime when only security guards are around.
Finding leads is something Jimmy has been doing for years, so he's quite experienced. If he can't find anything, then unless someone else gets lucky and stumbles upon something by accident, it will be equally difficult to find any relevant leads.
Jimmy reassured him with a few words and asked Wright to continue, especially to keep an eye on the kidnapping case. If the perpetrator can clearly navigate the island's surveillance, it's very likely there's an insider involved. However, under current circumstances, even if those security guards are insiders, they won't admit it, so it's best to maintain basic attention but not focus too hard.
Agent Wright is indeed unlucky, being stuck with this case and with nothing to show for it. Jimmy does feel a bit sorry for the guy, but he can't just declare the case unsolved. Things on his end aren't sorted yet, so Wright will have to bear with it for a few more days. Investigating is still investigating, and since it's just passing time anyway, he's left it to Wright to decide for himself.
Mark's situation is slightly better. He didn't leave the investigative team due to incompetence; he had an accident and ended up in the hospital. Jimmy let him leave the team to recuperate, freeing him temporarily. Once recovered, he can return to the Homicide Team for normal duties, and he won't have to take the blame for this case. In this respect, he's much luckier than Wright.
Of course, that includes Jimmy himself. Anyone thinking of gaining credit from this case can forget about it. Everyone's a pawn, with Jimmy controlling the two of them while others control Jimmy. Now, Jimmy intends to take steps to gain some autonomy.
The information in the storage box is indeed related to the deceased Harriton. The two people mentioned are involved in commercial and economic disputes with Harriton. Clearly, whoever provided Jimmy with the information is familiar with the case and knows what Jimmy is investigating, capable of providing such precise information.
Though he doesn't know who it is, it makes no difference to Jimmy. As he approached the front desk of the building, he was about to speak when he suddenly noticed two people walking by, one of them being his target. Talk about luck; any later, and he might have missed him.
"Mr. Andrew Robbins, please wait a moment." Jimmy turned directly to the two, reaching out to stop them, "FBI Special Agent Jimmy Yang. I need to speak with you."
The person beside Robbins intercepted in front of him, positioning between Jimmy and Robbins, likely a bodyguard. "Mr. Robbins needs to leave now. If you wish to make contact, please schedule an appointment here."
Jimmy brushed aside the security guard's hand, "Mr. Robbins, I need to talk about your matters with Mr. Harriton. I don't think it will take much of your time."
Robbins frowned at Jimmy, clueless as to why the FBI was reaching out to him. He patted the bodyguard, who moved aside to allow Robbins to face Jimmy, "I have no relationship with Harriton. I think you have the wrong person."
Jimmy said, "No, it's you I'm looking for. Could we talk on the side? It won't take long."
Robbins considered for a few seconds and nodded. Speaking near the front desk would surely be inconvenient. The three moved to a quieter corner of the lobby, and Jimmy got straight to the point: "Mr. Robbins, I'm here today to inquire about your dispute over an acquisition case with Mr. Harriton a few months back."
Robbins shrugged, "There's nothing to it. It was just a failed acquisition attempt."
Jimmy responded, "But it was the last case involving Mr. Harriton in which he made an enemy."
Robbins frowned, "So you suspect I hired someone? Don't look at me like that. The news of Harriton's death has been everywhere for half a month, most people have already speculated."
Jimmy shrugged, "You're right, but any related leads are our investigation's targets, including recent competitors of Mr. Harriton and potential enemies."
Robbins curled his lips, "Although I had disputes with him, it was over business operations. This happens in the city every day. Business is business. Even if we were opponents over an acquisition case, outside of that, we attended gatherings, discussing industry prospects, with no room for such malicious competition.
I understand you need to investigate, but I can clearly say this has nothing to do with me. Please don't disturb me again."
Having spoken, Robbins turned and left, not giving Jimmy the chance for further questions. The bodyguard stood in Jimmy's path, then retreated a few steps to follow Robbins out of the building.
Jimmy watched him leave without moving, observing until they left in an RR through the lobby's glass wall, then approached the front desk, handing out his business card, "Please give this to Mr. Robbins and tell him I'm awaiting his call."
The receptionist, having witnessed Jimmy and Robbins' earlier interaction, didn't know what to make of it but accepted the card anyway to prevent unforeseen issues.
Jimmy watched as the receptionist placed his card in a file, finally nodding and leaving the building with gratitude.
Frankly, Robbins left a decent impression on Jimmy. Despite a bit of arrogance, his expressions and actions showed a candid demeanor, indicating confidence in his detachment from the case.
This candidness starkly contrasts with other shareholders at the Harriton Foundation, who often seemed guilty during Jimmy's inquiries.
In this respect, Robbins is definitely a cut above the rest, evidently a peer to Harriton as a competitor, likely quite familiar with him.
Checking the time, Jimmy went to the Harriton Foundation after lunch. Although early, Jimmy sat in the guest room arranged by the front desk. Even by the arranged time, Mrs. Harriton hadn't arrived.
With a frown, he stood and asked the front desk to help contact her, only to find no one answering the call.
Jimmy tapped his fingers on the front desk, considering, "Is there another way to contact her? Try her residence."
The receptionist shook her head, "Sorry, I don't have any contacts other than her mobile number."
Jimmy handed her a business card, "Please have Mrs. Harriton get in touch with me immediately when she returns, thank you."
With that, Jimmy left the Harriton Foundation. The case had reached an intriguing phase. It seemed someone couldn't wait to take action. Whether it was Mrs. Harriton's actions or someone targeting her, failure to reach her by phone surely meant trouble.
