Chapter 1404 758: Accidents Abound (Part 2)
Driving back to Miami, Jimmy pondered who could make Dave come all the way just to talk to him about this case. During their casual chat, Dave mentioned he would only be staying in Palm Beach for two days before returning to New York, clearly indicating he was here just to see Jimmy.
From what Dave said, it was evident that this case had become a focal point for certain people. They wanted to know who was behind it and whether it would implicate them—those with interests tied to Harriton. This was exactly what Jimmy was worried about.
He once thought of handling it himself. Back then, when Justin was planning his route, he insisted on avoiding any situation that might reveal his identity, fearing that these stakeholders would investigate him after Harriton's death. Now that it had really happened, Jimmy was still surprised. The network of these wealthy people was indeed powerful; not only did they have someone from headquarters arrange for him to investigate, but they also had the clout to send Dave personally—an impressive feat.
Had Winston not intervened, and he acted on his own, someone else might be investigating him by now. Using public transport would have left plenty of traces, possibly exposing his identity.
Earlier, Dave mentioned an investigation angle, focusing on financials, which also surprised Jimmy. Harriton was the victim; he certainly didn't hire someone to kill himself. What could an investigation into financial movement reveal? The only thing Jimmy could think of was framing someone.
Jimmy was not a political animal and had never engaged in political activities. Such manipulation of financial flows to tarnish an opponent or other actions clearly indicated someone behind the scenes wanted to pin the blame on others for this case. Someone hoped to fish in troubled waters and achieve their own goals using this case.
Jimmy rolled down the car window, smoking while driving, occasionally letting out a bitter chuckle. What a mess.

In the afternoon, Jimmy and Wright were reviewing port surveillance when he suddenly received a call from Mark: "Yang, is it convenient for you to talk?"
Jimmy glanced at Wright and said: "No problem."
Mark: "I just received a package delivered by a hotel staff, brought in by a kid to the front desk asking them to help deliver it."
Jimmy: "What's it about?"
Mark: "A part of Harriton Foundation's client list, including some of Harriton's asset list."
Jimmy frowned: "Wait, let me think about it."
The capabilities of these people were indeed impressive. Just this morning, Dave talked to him, and in the afternoon, the materials were sent to Mark in Los Angeles, who was investigating Harriton's competitors. Were they in such a hurry?
This was indeed using Jimmy and his investigation team as pawns—hitting some people was more important to them than actually investigating the case?
Jimmy: "Organize the materials, then seal them, and continue your investigation. The authenticity of these materials needs further investigation. Do not disrupt your investigation direction. Also, confirm through hotel surveillance who sent it, and investigate the source. Someone wants to mislead our investigation direction; find out who. Be careful."
Mark: "Got it."
Although Dave had already given a reminder, Jimmy did not plan to be their pawn just like that. With so many people focused on this case, their investigation process must be compliant, or they would face endless troubles. Such sudden materials could not be used as evidence; at most, they offered a direction. The information within needed to be re-verified through regular channels before use.
Although Mark wasn't particularly experienced, finding the person sending the materials from the hotel shouldn't be an issue. Continuing the investigation might be more troublesome, but he shouldn't face any life-threatening danger—let him investigate first.
Jimmy thought for a while and continued to review the surveillance with Wright. The port area was vast, but fortunately, they focused on the area near the yacht berths, minimizing the coverage. If they found no clues, they would consider expanding the search range.
Yet the development of events seemed to deviate from Jimmy's expectations. Early the next morning, as Jimmy entered the temporary office in Miami, Mark's call came through again. Jimmy answered and said: "Mark, have you found anything new?"
An unfamiliar voice came over the phone: "Hello, I am Taylor Warren, a paramedic from the Los Angeles Fire Department. We just picked up your colleague headed to the hospital. He has a head injury and requested I contact you before losing consciousness."
Jimmy: "Is his injury serious? I am FBI Supervisory Special Agent Jimmy Yang. He is my subordinate, Special Agent Mark Anderson. Tell me his current status."
Dr. Warren: "Oh, Agent, he was in a car accident, with a head injury possibly leading to a mild concussion. No obvious external injuries on other parts of his body. He needs a full check-up at the hospital but currently is not in life-threatening danger."
Jimmy: "Give me the hospital address. I will head to Los Angeles immediately. Thank you."
Jimmy hung up, looked at Wright, who had entered the office early, and said: "Mark had an accident in Los Angeles. I need to rush over immediately. Wright, the port investigation is up to you."
Wright nodded: "How is he now? You go ahead. Rest assured, I will handle things here."
Jimmy left the office without returning to the hotel for his luggage, heading straight to the airport. His expression was grim; the timing of the incident was so coincidental that it led to some unsettling thoughts. Was Mark's accident truly an accident or something intentional?
He called Ruiz while driving, asking him to contact the Los Angeles office personnel to watch over and attend to Mark. He would be on the next available flight to Los Angeles.
At Miami Airport, flights were frequent, but seats were not always available. Yet, Jimmy managed to land in Los Angeles that afternoon and took a cab directly to the hospital.
Once he confirmed Mark's room number, a suited agent was guarding the door when Jimmy arrived. He showed his credentials, thanked the agent for taking care of Mark, and then opened the door and went in: "Mark, are you okay?"
A few hours was enough for Mark to regain consciousness, though he didn't look good with his head wrapped in bandages and face patched in places, sitting slanted and dazed at the headboard.
Mark: "I'm okay, the airbag saved me, but I got knocked out." He pointed to his face, "This was cut by glass, no big deal. I'm seeing things a bit blurry; the doctor says it's due to the concussion and should clear up with some rest."
Jimmy finally breathed a sigh of relief, "That's good. What do you think of the accident?"
Mark: "I was driving normally, hit by another car at the intersection from the side, and I don't remember much after that. It's temporarily unclear whether it was intentional."
Jimmy: "Did you investigate the person who delivered the materials yesterday?"
Mark: "I checked the surveillance, but I didn't bring it with me—it's in the hotel room computer."
Jimmy: "You didn't alert them, right?"
Mark: "I shouldn't have. I just showed my badge and asked the hotel manager to check the surveillance. I hadn't verified that person's identity yet."
Jimmy nodded: "Then it probably wasn't him. Alright, get some rest. Pass me your room key; I'll go check the materials in your room."
Mark reached for his bag, took out the room key, and handed it to Jimmy. His current condition didn't allow him to continue the investigation, at least until he recovered from the concussion.
Mark mentioned the people he'd investigated over the last few days and the original plan for today, tasks that Jimmy would now take over.
Taking the room key and the address Mark provided, Jimmy went to Mark's room. Over the past few days, a considerable amount of material had been gathered. Several companies' documents had been printed and neatly stacked on the table. Beside them was a yellow envelope containing yesterday's delivered materials. After taking a look, Jimmy shook his head and placed it back on the table.
