Chapter 1263 - 692
Chapter 1263 - 692
When Jimmy left the gentleman's club, it was already quite late, but he still didn't want to go home. He went to a bar to relax for a while.
These days, after coming home at night, Nia enjoyed watching horror movies. Jimmy didn't like those shoddily made films at all, but he couldn't forcibly stop her from watching them.
Dr. Mary had previously suggested that she should not watch them anymore, but Jimmy didn't want to be too extreme and preferred a gradual adjustment. Forcibly stopping her might trigger a rebellious reaction, so he had set aside the tapes that were too outrageous and fast-forwarded through the remaining ones to ensure they were at least somewhat watchable.
Sitting in his own bar and drinking was relaxing. He also took the opportunity to think about what Ruiz had said. In fact, the fact that there were moles in the bureau was understandable; the corruption of law enforcement agencies by the mafia had always been present.
The NYPD's precincts in New York are backed by various gangs. The income for police officers is not high. In fact, in the most famous city in the United States, the NYPD's income is considered low. Many police officers who appear to earn a lot only achieve that through heavy overtime. It could be said they earn through risking their lives, and taking some money from certain channels to improve their lives is an open secret.
The gangsters hate and feel most helpless against the FBI. The FBI has been cracking down on gangs for decades, focusing on major factions since the Hoover era. However, the social hierarchy in the United States has always been a breeding ground for gangs; it's impossible to eradicate them, so the FBI hasn't gone too far.
Gangs can't deal with the FBI. Their only option is to hide or plant moles. However, the level of these bribed moles remains uncertain. It's not unheard of for a top-to-bottom clean sweep of important positions within an organization.
Ruiz himself used to be in charge of this area, and even took down several big families harshly. Yet, many people inevitably slipped through. Crime families, particularly many vicious organizations, still exist because there's simply no evidence to take them down in one sweep. The gangsters are very clever.
Now whoever the gangsters refer to as their backer must hold a significant position. It depends on whether Ruiz can withstand the pressure when the time comes. If Jimmy really pursued an investigation, a series of problems could arise, especially if the other party might be meeting with certain people.
Time slowly passed. Nia, possibly due to watching too many low-quality films, started asking Jimmy to accompany her to the cinema, and not to watch horror or war movies, but mostly dramas and romances. They were making Jimmy feel depressed. The plots of these films were too straightforward. Apart from film critics who delved deeply into the plot meanings and gave high scores, there were generally few viewers in the cinema.
Jimmy was helpless. He had talked to Nia many times, and she seemed a little better; however, she hadn't abandoned investigating the paranormal cases. But she herself didn't possess certain qualities like Jimmy. She occasionally visited the scenes but found nothing, even if she had discovered many potential clues, yet there was no breakthrough.
Jimmy even met with Father Rodney, hoping that when they handled cases again, they would allow Jimmy and Nia to join, letting Nia experience firsthand how dangerous evil spirits or demons could be. However, Father Rodney could never agree with Jimmy. If it were just Jimmy, it wouldn't matter, but Nia was an ordinary person and Jimmy's wife. They had to protect Nia's safety before their child was born, no matter what.
Jimmy truly felt the same sense of dilemma as Hank from the New Mexico DEA. Hank's wife also had psychological issues that Hank hadn't resolved for years, leaving him constantly on edge. Although Nia was different from Hank's wife, Mary, her current psychological abnormality was also causing Jimmy some mental exhaustion.
Jimmy once again sought the assistance of Dr. Mary. After many discussions with Jimmy, Nia also realized her issues and went to Mary's office without reservation. After several sessions, she was a little better.
Additionally, Dr. Mary received some pieces of information from Nia, which combined with the identities of Nia and Jimmy as proof, shocked Dr. Mary. She also became more certain about Nia's condition. It was actually a lack of security, especially as a police officer accustomed to handling various sudden incidents forcefully. Suddenly encountering an entirely unmanageable situation created a huge sense of disparity.
In facing this situation, Dr. Mary really didn't have a good solution either. The issue had exceeded her experience, so she could only try to get Nia to relax and prescribe some antidepressants for her.
Jimmy also made up his mind, that even if there was a little danger, the next time they encountered such a paranormal case, he would ensure Nia participated, even just as a bystander. Perhaps increased stimulation might take a poison-to-poison approach to help her feel slightly better. But he must prepare some protective gear for her in advance; the items from the church that he had could be given to Nia to carry.
Life never smoothly sails for anyone. As Jimmy was worrying about Nia, various matters continued moving forward according to their predetermined order. Soon, a new task fell onto Jimmy's shoulders, and it was yet another distant trouble, turned over to him.
