Chapter 1262 - 691: Another Mole?
Chapter 1262 - 691: Another Mole?
The combination of one man and three women was quite eye-catching, especially since the three women were all beauties, and the only man was Chinese. Even the waiters would deliberately glance at Jimmy when taking and delivering orders, thinking this man didn't seem so simple.
The signature dish here was the French-style steak with top-grade Kobe beef, paired with a unique red wine sauce, fresh herbs, and carefully selected French mushrooms, complemented by a bottle of French wine chosen by the restaurant. This perfect pairing enhanced the taste of the whole dish. It was also the best steak Jimmy had tasted in years, tender and juicy, a quality he couldn't achieve himself.
Jimmy's main task was already completed: to book the restaurant and gather the people together. The rest was up to Dr. Mary and the others. Dr. Mary's eloquence was truly impressive, and Nia wasn't the silent type either, so there were no awkward silences. This was the best state, as Jimmy didn't need to say much and could just satisfy his appetite.
Besides the steak, there were classic French dishes like pan-seared foie gras, garlic snails, mushroom soup, and crème brûlée. In short, Jimmy was very pleased with the meal, except for the over two thousand dollars he spent when paying the bill, which made him a bit pained. It must be said, high-end restaurants have prices that are hard to handle. For ordinary people, they might have to consider getting by on burgers for the rest of the month.
Afterwards, Jimmy asked the restaurant to call a designated driver to send them home. It wasn't until Jimmy met Dr. Mary again that he got her diagnosis results.
Nia appeared quite normal, with clear consciousness, focused attention, and coherent thinking, without symptoms like delusions. However, Dr. Mary still obtained some key information from the conversation. Nia had some anxiety, though not obvious, seemingly lacking a sense of security, and showing signs of excessive stress.
Since Jimmy hadn't spoken about what Nia encountered, Mary naturally couldn't make a targeted judgment. But it was still feasible to make a basic assessment based on Nia's behavior.
Jimmy agreed with this conclusion. Nia's current performance did show a lack of security. But he certainly wouldn't tell Dr. Mary about the paranormal events and could only ask her to prescribe some anti-anxiety medication. As for how to get Nia to take it, they'd have to see when the time comes.
However, Dr. Mary still offered some general advice: have Nia adjust her lifestyle, increase exercise, improve her diet, adjust her schedule, and participate more in social activities. This would help adjust her mood, and she should also pause watching those stimulating movies.
Jimmy, of course, knew all this, as he was studying psychology. These suggestions were standard treatment advice, commonly given for psychological issues.
Fortunately, at least for now, Nia's behavior wasn't too extreme, and he had enough time to slowly mediate for her.
During this period, Jimmy was basically coasting, with his mind on Nia because she was his wife, after all, making him more concerned. He wasn't really involved in work matters, which left him a bit confused when he got a call from Ruiz.
Ruiz called Jimmy, inviting him for a drink after work, and Jimmy agreed. But this time, it wasn't Jimmy's bar; it was a gentlemen's club Ruiz often visited.
The two sat on the sofa, each lighting a cigar, with drinks on the coffee table in front of them. Ruiz simply mentioned some of the things they had done before, preparations made by a certain someone, and recent developments on their side. Jimmy didn't interrupt, knowing that topic surely meant there was something important; otherwise, these confidential matters shouldn't be disclosed to someone like Jimmy, who wasn't part of the project team.
Ruiz: "What do you think of our current arrangement?"
Jimmy: "It's okay, but who is your target? When do you plan to close the net?"
Ruiz: "It's not yet determined. Through a certain channel, our records all come from them. We can roughly deduce the underworld's sales paths based on the flow of goods. Once everything is tallied, it will be about time to rep and if all goes well, at least a large number of forces entrenched in New York's underground can be swept away."
Jimmy: "If too many actions are taken, it might cause a reshuffle among underground forces, possibly resulting in more chaos."
Ruiz: "Their internal struggles don't matter as long as they don't affect the public. What we're doing has enough significance."
Jimmy nodded. Having been with the FBI for some time, he understood their mindset. Although they were a federal law enforcement agency, their main task was still to maintain some level of balance. Expecting the FBI to eradicate the country's deep-rooted problems was dreaming. Simply keeping them in check and not overstepping boundaries would be a major success.
Ruiz picked up a glass and clinked it with Jimmy's. They were drinking brandy today; its fruity aroma was more intense. Jimmy still preferred the grain fragrance of whiskey.
Ruiz: "Jimmy, the reason I asked you over is to request your help in investigating something."
Jimmy turned to Ruiz; this was today's main topic. "What is it?"
Ruiz: "There's been a lead from a certain channel. Someone hopes to use his business as a condition to buy into a submarine dock. This in itself isn't a big deal, as it's unlikely for one group to monopolize that transport route. But a misstep in the subsequent communication revealed that someone was taking a silent share in his business. We have someone in our bureau serving as a shield for gang operations."
Jimmy took a puff of his cigar and exhaled the smoke. "What business?"
Ruiz: "Methamphetamine. After being transported at high purity to New York, they dilute it for other street gangs to sell."
Jimmy: "Couldn't such a person just be eliminated directly?"
Ruiz: "No, our current approach shouldn't be so crude. We need to quickly find and remove such internal snakes. If possible, it's better to first settle internally before dealing with their channels to avoid alerting them and letting them escape."
Jimmy nodded: "What do you need me to do?"
Ruiz: "Prepare yourself. Once there is news from them, you might need to step in, controlling the person. This matter mustn't be known to too many people to avoid us passively getting involved after someone steps in."
Jimmy: "Just control? Then what's the charge for the prosecution?"
Ruiz shook his head: "We'll decide then; it's not clear who exactly we're dealing with yet."
Jimmy: "Okay, I'll wait for your news. Hopefully, it comes quickly."
Ruiz: "We'll work to confirm it as soon as possible."
Ruiz had no other choice. What they were doing was highly confidential. Aside from a few insiders, there was no need to inform other departments or leaders. But among those informed, finding someone trustworthy and reliable to carry out the investigation or arrest was nearly impossible. After all, the leaders had long been removed from the front lines, and they were unlikely to handle it.
Though Jimmy wasn't on this specific task line, he had some previous understanding and, in terms of capability and reliability, finding someone better than Jimmy in the Manhattan office was difficult. So, it was better to communicate with him, and if they really needed action later, Jimmy was certainly more suitable and dependable than others.
Hughes had previously agreed to keep Jimmy's identity confidential. Although Ruiz knew Jimmy had a wide social circle, he didn't know that Jimmy also had a layer of CIA identity.
If Hughes were still in charge now, he might have directly arranged for Jimmy to track and investigate. After all, the concept deeply ingrained in his mind was that as a CIA agent, Jimmy would possess substantial tracking and investigative capabilities, not to mention skills in lock-picking, interrogation, and more...
