Chapter 416: Corner
Chapter 416: Corner
The commotion from the bathroom passed as soon as Quizen whisked Coco away from the hall.
Then, the dinner arrived sooner than everyone had anticipated which caused the five of them to sit on their seats with an awkward atmosphere.
Alhai still has not answered Heiren’s and Zaque’s questions while Quizen on the other hand doesn’t care anymore.
Only the sound of wooden utensils clacking against the plate could be heard, along with the occasional ringing of the garden fairy who was eating her own portion beside Coco’s plate.
Contrary to Alhai’s belief, the fairy looked quite happy and excited as she seemed to be saying something to Coco.
He thought that the fairy would have attacked him nonstop by now and tug him on the hair or something, but she has not done anything.
In fact, she flew towards him after he took a bath and flashed him a large grin.
For a strange and unknown reason, that grin of hers terrified him..
He took a step back just in case she decided to swing at him, but instead, she turned and flew away, leaving him there wondering what kind of things could be running through her head at the moment.
He felt more uncomfortable after that short exchange with the fairy and now, he felt like he needed to walk in eggshells around the small creature due to what she knows— but it’s not like she would be able to tell the others what happened, right?
The first one to finish dinner was Coco, fortunately.
She immediately excused herself from the table and made sure to place her dirty dishes in the sink before she left the kitchen, leaving her spot on the table spotless and cold.
Now, it’s just the four mediators who were left on the table.
"So.. Are you not going to tell us what happened while we were gone?" Zaque spoke up, deciding to just be straightforward and ask Alhai what has been bothering him.
"Did you make a move on her?" Heiren inquired, making the other three snap their attention to him.
"Why.. Would I do that to her?" Alhai retorted back, but the lack of refusal was evident by his tone, his eyes shifting down from Heiren to his plate.
Zaque immediately picked up on the implication of his behavior, making his eyes narrow into a glare.
"That wasn’t the question." The red haired mediator hissed and tightened his grip on his utensils. "Heiren asked if you made a move on Coco or not so did you?"
The thought didn’t cross his mind earlier, but after Heiren asked the question, he couldn’t stop himself from growing suspicious towards his friend— the same friend who had been nothing, but an absolute abomination to Coco.
"Thank you for the food." Alhai mumbled and abruptly stood up from his seat.
However, Quizen did the same and rushed towards the door, his hand slamming the door shut before twisting the lock until the familiar sound of click resonated in the room.
Alhai froze, his eyes widening.
"What are you doing?" Alhai shot the question to the fourth husband.
Quizen merely shrugged and pressed his back against the door, crossing his arms as he tilted his head. "Resting. What else could I possibly do in my position?"
Alhai didn’t respond.
Zaque glanced between Quizen and Alhai before he settled his eyes on the third husband.
"So?" He started and caught Alhai’s attention. "The question isn’t that hard, is it? All you have to do is answer whether you made a move on her or not."
"I didn’t." The silver haired mediator uttered, shifting his eyes away from Zaque’s.
Now, out of all the four mediators inside the room, the bad liar was the youngest and the most expressive of them all— Alhai Hughes, and when he does lie, he can’t look anyone in the eyes.
".. You did." Zaque stated bluntly, his heart dropping to his stomach.
"I didn’t." Alhai insisted, his eyes glued to the table, standing still on his spot with his hands clutching his utensils tightly, unable to let them go.
"You totally did." Heiren said, the tone of his voice edging towards disbelief and a scoff.
Alhai didn’t bother responding for the third time and kept his gaze averted from their prying eyes, his throat feeling strangely dry.
"Do you like her?" Quizen suddenly asked, the question making the others’ heads turn to him.
"I don’t." Alhai answered almost immediately, his throat constricting and feeling like he couldn’t breathe. "I don’t even know why I kissed her—"
The sound of the feet of the chairs skidding across the kitchen floor cut Alhai off, making him almost jump out of his skin and snap his head up to look at the cause, only to see Zaque with his mouth open.
"You kissed her?" Zaque muttered, as if he didn’t hear what Alhai said the first time.
"What? No! I didn’t— I was just trying to—" Alhai felt his face become warm in an instant, his teal colored eyes wide in denial as he started to stammer on his words."My lips just touched— I mean, I didn’t mean to!"
At this point, Quizen had pulled away from the door and slowly stalked over to Alhai.
Heiren had rounded the table and was now walking to the silver haired mediator, making Alhai start to back away towards the corner of the room.
"We left you alone for an hour." Heiren stated bluntly and continued making his way to the third husband. "But then you went around and kissed people because of what? Because you don’t know? Because you didn’t mean to?"
Heiren felt like he wanted to punch his friend, and he didn’t like that, but recalling how Alhai had acted towards Coco made him mad.
"You say that you don’t like her.. But you kissed her." Quizen mumbled, glaring at Alhai.
"That’s enough." Zaque called, halting them in their tracks. "Why bother cornering him when he said it himself that he doesn’t like her?"
