Chapter 398: Relief and gratitude
Chapter 398: Relief and gratitude
Coco couldn’t describe how grateful and relieved she felt by Jacques continuous reassurance regarding.. Everything in general.
"I don’t care if you’re not the actual Coco Hughes." Jacques said, smiling. "I only care about you being true to me, true to my husband— true to everyone, even without telling us the truth."
"But aren’t I basically lying to you.. Because I wasn’t really the Coco Hughes you all know?" Coco mumbled, looking down.
"You’re the only Coco Hughes I know, silly." Jacques let out a giggle and stood up from her kneeling position, her legs a little wobbly from staying in the same straining position for a little too long.
She held onto Coco’s shoulder firmly and steadied herself. "Sorry— anyway, if that’s not enough for you. I can have a butcher house built somewhere around the market.. To prove that I’m not lying or anything, that I believe you."
"Build?" Coco’s eyes went wide in surprise. "Wouldn’t that be too expensive?"
"I have funds for it." Jacques smiled and pat Coco’s shoulder. "We stayed in the village so we wouldn’t have the chance to bump into anyone from our family.. But what are the chances that they’ll buy some products near the city gates?"
"Small, but never zero." Coco stated, making Jacques roll her eyes and scoff playfully.
"Haha, so funny." The pink haired woman shook her head, but a small smile still played in her lips. "It’s not that expensive to have a small house built around here. It’s the closest to the city gate so the price is lower than the price you would get if you want to be near the castle."
"Ohh.." Coco mused, finally understanding why. "How much would it cost then?"
"Hmm.. I don’t know.. But I guess it would be roughly around thirty thousand gold coins?" Jacques guessed, tapping a finger against her chin. "Though.. We can ask a professional if you want."
"No, no, no.. It’s fine for now." Coco mumbled, the silence finally settling between them.
Jacques stared down at Coco, a soft look crossing her features as she took in the way her friend shifted nervously in her seat— sure, it may not be that much, but she could sense that Coco was still hesitant.
"You don’t have to tell me anything." Jacques repeated what she said earlier, hoping that it would break through Coco’s troubled mind.
"I have.. Abilities that the people of this world don’t have." Coco said, her voice trembling slightly due to her nervousness getting the best of her. "My strength.. It comes from this ability."
"I figured just as much." Jacques giggled and placed a hand on Coco’s head, only to flinch when she felt something move under her palm.
What was that? She thought, withdrawing her hand away from Coco’s head as if the hair strands burned her hand.
Coco ignored the whines coming from above her hand, the movements tickling her lightly which caused her to shift in her seat again.
"..You don’t have to reveal everything, okay? I really don’t mind.. Just tell me what your name is, then we can leave it at that." Jacques murmured, her eyes glued to Coco’s head before she reluctantly looked away to gaze at Coco’s eyes instead.
"I’m Coco." Coco introduced herself, feeling a little funny about her introduction. "Coco is my name."
Jacques blinked, surprised and in disbelief. "Seriously?"
"Yes, my name is Coco Coison and I’m the oldest second sister out of three daughters of my loving mother." Coco hummed, an amused smile settling on her face.
"Is that why you didn’t have a hard time adapting to your name?" Jacques laughed, shaking her head.
"Yes, but it did take me a while to respond to "Mrs. Hughes" because I wasn’t married in my previous life." Coco admitted, laughing along with Jacques.
"You were single?" Out of all the information that Coco had revealed, it seems that Coco’s marital status was what shocked Jacques the most, her lips parting out of shock and eyes going wide in disbelief.
"I was." Coco giggled and shook Jacques by the waist. "You don’t have to act so shocked."
"But I am shocked! How can you be single if you’re this good and loving?!" Jacques exclaimed, pointing at Coco and gesturing to her from head to toe. "Why didn’t I exist in that world? I would have introduced you to someone amazing!"
The conversation transitioned from Jacques scaring Coco with her questions to her questions making Coco embarrassed.
Jacques sounded so exaggerated that Coco couldn’t help, but rub her neck sheepishly.
"You don’t have to go that far.. I wasn’t that attractive before, you know?" Coco mumbled, feeling a little shy from how Jacques seemed to look offended by her words.
"Wasn’t attractive? Appearances don’t matter!" Jacques stomped her foot and glared.
"They are all a fool for not pursuing someone as amazing as you! How old were you before you got here anyway?" She quickly shifted the topic and asked, crossing her arms in front of her.
"I was twenty five years old." Coco answered, making Jacques still.
"Oh.. No wonder." Jacques let out a sigh and rubbed her face. "You were too young to get married, silly! It wasn’t because you weren’t attractive—"
"People in my world mostly can only live up to eighty years old.." Coco said, cutting Jacques off.
"Eighty is too young!" Jacques gasped, her face turning a little pale as she pointed at herself. "I’m just ninety two! And I won’t die soon!"
Coco could only laugh again, clutching her stomach this time. "That’s you, but not us. Our grandparents rarely get to reach their hundred of age and died before they could reach eighty years of age."
She paused, a grateful smile on her lips. "But you know.. I’m so thankful that I have you as a friend."
Just like that, the playful atmosphere changed.
"I may not be able to express it properly, but I feel so relieved to know that I won’t lose you."
