The Fallout
In the cafeteria, a group of girls giggled as Hanna passed, tossing comments just loud enough for her to hear. “I heard she just couldn’t decide which guy to go after,” one said with a smirk. “Guess she wanted both.”
Another girl added, “Can’t say I’m surprised. You know how some people are, always needing attention from someone new.” They laughed, each word another blow to Hanna’s already fragile resolve. She wanted to shrink away, to hide until the whispers faded, but she knew it wouldn’t be that easy.
As she sat down at her usual table with Emily and Elordi, she caught Finn’s eye across the room. He was sitting with his own group of friends, his jaw set as one of the guys leaned in, his face tight with disapproval. Finn shook his head, his body tense as his friends muttered words she could only guess were cutting remarks about his decision to be with her. Despite everything, he met her gaze, giving her a small, reassuring smile.
“Ignore them,” Emily said firmly, nudging her gently. “None of them know the truth. They’re just hungry for gossip.”
Hanna nodded, her throat tight. “It’s just… everywhere I go, it’s like everyone’s waiting for me to crack. I didn’t think people would care this much about… all this.”
Elordi leaned forward, his face earnest. “That’s because they don’t have their own lives to worry about. Give it time—they’ll move on. And even if they don’t, you’ve got us. That’s all that matters.”
Hanna’s heart swelled with gratitude, her friends’ unwavering loyalty like a light in the darkness of her week. She knew Finn was going through his own struggle—his friends constantly questioning him, pressuring him to distance himself from her. And yet, he remained by her side, just as he always had, his presence a reminder that their connection meant more than the petty judgment of others.
Over the next few days, Hanna’s perspective began to shift. She still felt the weight of her reputation crumbling, but little by little, she realized that her relationship with Finn, her true friends, and her own sense of self were worth more than the whispers. Despite everything, she held her head a little higher, feeling a quiet resolve grow within her.
