Never Just Friends

Tensions Rising

Tensions Rising

The days following Ciara’s latest attack were filled with uncertainty and unease. The normal rhythm of school had been replaced with a constant, heavy tension that seemed to hang in the air. Hanna, Emily, and Finn were on edge, knowing that every corner they turned, every conversation they had, could be another setup, another way for Ciara to strike.

Hanna sat on her bed late one evening, scrolling through the student forum, her mind racing with each new post. Every comment, every photo, every whisper felt like a personal attack. Her fingers trembled as she clicked through the pages, her stomach twisting with every new rumor she saw circulating.

There were new pictures of her and Finn, twisted into something they weren’t. People were still talking about the old videos, the ones that Ciara had planted. There was no escaping it. Even when she tried to focus on something else, her mind kept returning to the question: What was Ciara going to do next?

Just as Hanna felt the pressure building, a soft knock interrupted her thoughts. Finn stepped into her room, his face etched with concern. He walked over and sat beside her on the bed, his presence grounding her.

“Hey,” he said softly, his voice filled with concern. “You’re torturing yourself again.”

Hanna glanced up at him, her heart aching at the sight of his worried expression. “I just want to know what she’s planning,” she muttered, her voice strained with frustration. “I need to understand what she’s going to do next before it happens.”

Finn reached over and gently took her hand, his thumb brushing against her knuckles in a soothing motion. “We’ll figure it out. Together.”

Hanna let out a shaky breath, trying to calm the storm of emotions inside her. She knew Finn was right—she couldn’t keep obsessing over Ciara’s every move, but it felt impossible not to. The weight of the situation was suffocating.

“Do you ever feel like…” Hanna hesitated, the words catching in her throat as she tried to voice the fear she had been keeping locked inside. “Do you ever feel like maybe we’re losing? Like no matter what we do, she’s always one step ahead?”

Finn’s gaze softened as he moved closer, cupping her face in his hands. He made her look up at him, his voice steady and sure. “We’re not losing. You’re stronger than her, Hanna. Don’t let her make you doubt that.”

Hanna let out a shaky sigh, feeling the warmth of his hands on her face. The weight she’d been carrying seemed to lessen just a little. Finn’s unwavering support was a lifeline she desperately needed, and in that moment, she allowed herself to believe him, even if only for a few seconds.

Finn’s lips brushed against her forehead in a gentle kiss, his presence wrapping around her like a shield. “We’ll get through this. Together.”

Hanna closed her eyes, letting the simple comfort of his touch wash over her. For just a moment, everything felt normal again, like the world wasn’t spinning out of control.

But deep down, she knew that Ciara wasn’t done. The calm didn’t last long.

As Hanna spent the following days trying to keep her focus on school and her friends, the tension only increased. Ciara’s attacks had escalated. At school, whispers followed her every step. She couldn’t go anywhere without hearing snickers or seeing students glance at her with knowing looks. It was as if everyone was waiting for the next big scandal to break, and Hanna could feel the weight of their expectations bearing down on her.

Emily, too, was feeling the strain. The girl who had always been her rock now seemed just as on edge, constantly checking her phone and scanning the halls for signs of danger.

“Have you heard anything?” Hanna asked one day as they sat together at lunch, trying to eat in peace.

Emily shook her head, her eyes darting around the cafeteria nervously. “No. But I have a bad feeling. Ciara’s too quiet right now. She’s planning something.”

Hanna frowned, her fingers tapping against the edge of her tray. “I know. It’s like the calm before the storm.”

Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of a phone buzzing in Hanna’s pocket. She pulled it out quickly, her pulse quickening when she saw it was a message from an unknown number.

Unknown Number: Your little game is almost over. Just wait.

Hanna’s heart dropped into her stomach as she stared at the message. The words were simple, but the implication was clear. Ciara was getting ready to make her next move, and Hanna had no idea what it would be.

“Who is it?” Emily asked, sensing Hanna’s sudden tension.

“It’s her,” Hanna replied, her voice barely above a whisper. “She’s watching me. She’s always watching.”

Finn, who had been sitting a few seats away, looked up, his expression darkening when he saw the look on Hanna’s face.

“Let me see that,” he said, standing up and walking over to them. “What does she want?”

Hanna handed him the phone, her fingers shaking. He read the message, his jaw tightening.

“We’ll deal with this,” Finn said, his voice low but resolute. “We’re not letting her control this anymore.”

Hanna nodded, but the doubt still lingered in her chest. She wanted to believe that they could handle whatever Ciara threw at them, but the last few weeks had shown her just how far Ciara was willing to go. And Hanna wasn’t sure how much longer she could keep her head above water.

As the week went on, Hanna tried to stay focused on the people who mattered most—Finn, Emily, and the others who were in this with her. But Ciara’s looming presence overshadowed everything. The silence in the halls, the whispers behind closed doors, and the constant unease left Hanna feeling isolated, even when she wasn’t alone.

One night, as she lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, she tried to push the fear aside. She had to stay strong. She had to keep fighting, for herself, for Finn, and for everything they had worked for.

But just as she was about to drift off to sleep, her phone buzzed once again, the screen lighting up with a new message from the same unknown number.

Unknown Number: I told you, this isn’t over. You won’t win.

Hanna’s stomach twisted as the words sank in. She knew Ciara wasn’t done—but how much further would she go to destroy everything?

The battle was far from over. And the storm was only just beginning.
