Never Just Friends

Ciara’s Breakdown

Ciara’s Breakdown

The next morning, Hanna and Finn decided to walk into school together. She felt a surge of courage as they passed through the school gates, their hands intertwined, ready to face whatever came their way.

But that peace shattered as a voice, sharp and bitter, cut through the air.

"Isn’t this sweet?" Ciara’s tone dripped with sarcasm as she stepped out from behind the bleachers, her arms crossed and eyes blazing. "Hanna, the innocent little victim, and her knight in shining armor. How perfect."

Hanna’s hand instinctively tightened around Finn’s as she faced Ciara, a sinking feeling in her stomach. “Ciara, what are you doing here?”

Ciara laughed, a harsh, brittle sound. "Oh, just watching you get everything you've ever wanted while leaving a mess behind you. You ruin people, Hanna. You pretend to be sweet, pretend you’re this perfect friend, but all you do is take, take, take."

Hanna took a steadying breath. “Ciara, this isn’t the way. I never wanted to hurt you.”

"Didn’t want to hurt me?" Ciara’s eyes widened, a dangerous glint in them. She took a step closer, her voice rising with every word. "Do you think I’m stupid? First Finn, then Jacob—you couldn’t stand to see me happy for even a second, could you? You had to take him, too."

"Ciara, stop," Finn interrupted, his tone steady but firm. "This has gone too far. You’re hurting yourself more than anyone else."

Ciara turned her gaze on him, her expression twisting with betrayal. "You think you know her, Finn? You don’t know anything. She’s been manipulating you this whole time, keeping you around as her little backup plan in case Marco didn’t work out. Can’t you see she’s just using you?"

Hanna felt Finn’s hand squeeze hers, his silent reassurance steadying her, but the words still stung. She opened her mouth to defend herself, but Ciara cut her off, her voice breaking.

"I gave up everything for Jacob," she said, her voice trembling. "I tried to change, tried to be someone better. But it was never enough, was it? Not when you’re around, Hanna. Everyone loves you, no matter what you do. And now I’m the one left with nothing."

"Ciara, this isn’t about me," Hanna replied, her own voice shaking. "This anger… it’s not going to fix anything."

“Oh, don’t you dare act like you care,” Ciara spat, her voice rising to a fever pitch. Her face flushed with fury, her hands balled into fists. “You took everything, Hanna. My reputation, my friends—my life. But I’m not letting you take him, too.”

Ciara’s voice broke on the last words, her mask of anger slipping to reveal the hurt, the desperation beneath it. For a moment, Hanna saw the pain in her eyes, the raw wound that had been festering inside her for so long.

"Go ahead," Ciara continued, her tone laced with venom. "Enjoy your happiness. But don’t get too comfortable. I’m going to make sure everyone sees you for what you really are—a fake, a liar, a heartless—”

“Enough!” Finn’s voice rang out, sharp and commanding. He stepped forward, his eyes locked on Ciara’s. “Hanna doesn’t deserve this, and neither do you. This obsession is destroying you, Ciara. Walk away. Let it go before it’s too late.”

Ciara stared at him, breathing hard, her face a storm of conflicting emotions. For a moment, it seemed like she might listen, like she might finally let go of the resentment that had consumed her. But then her expression hardened, and she let out a hollow, humorless laugh.

"You don’t get it, do you?" she whispered, her eyes narrowing as she looked from Finn to Hanna. "I’m not walking away. I’ll make sure you regret every single thing you’ve taken from me. I’ll ruin everything you care about, even if it destroys me."
