Chapter 93: Are you sure it’s just a cocktail party??

The door opened and the gang entered into the large room at once.

"Ahaha, sorry to keep you waiting, uncle!" Liang Yang said as he walked in.

"Ohohoho, it was no problem." The old butler uncle let out a laugh and forced a smile. He would have to endure and teach them the basics of waiting a cocktail party. Then, he would pick out the bests among them for the party while the rest would go home. Surely, they could not all be equally skilled?

He looked at them one by one and nodded his head. "Since you have all put on the uniform, let’s go over what you are to be doing. Have any of you worked in a bar before? Or has any experience with mixing drinks??"

"I have." Dong Wang adjusted the glasses on his nose as he raised his hand.

"What? You??" Liang Yang, Xue Waoming, Xiao Shen and Tian Hua all gave him strange looks.

It would have been fine if it was Liang Yang, or even Xue Waoming, but Dong Wang?? Really??

"Bah, my mom owns a small nightclub in Shanghai! I’ve told you guys before!" Dong Wang rolled his eyes.

"Oh, that is very good. You shall be in charge of mixing the drinks, then, young friend..." The old butler uncle said, asking him for his name.

"Oh, it’s Dong Wang." Liang Yang said.

"Hmm. Dong Wang." Xiao Shen and Xue Waoming nodded their heads.

"Bastards, It’s Song Mingrui!" Dong Wang gnashed his teeth. "My name is Song Mingrui! Did you lot forget my real name?!"

"Ahaha, of course not!" Xiao Shen gave a dry laugh and scratch the back of his head. He had actually forgotten this fellow’s real name...

"Of course we know that your name is Song Mingrui, Dong Wang." Liang Yang said, nodding his head.

"I actually thought your name was Dong Wang." Xue ’Kevin’ Waoming shrugged his shoulders.

"Same." Tian Hua said.

"......" Dong Wang.

F*ck the both of you! Our friendship is over!!

"Okay..." The old butler uncle pursed his lips slightly and changed the topic. "Before you young friends can do this work, you must first understand the ins and outs of waiting a cocktail party. Follow me, please."

He said as he left the room.

Xiao Shen and co all followed behind him as he continued explaining.

"Unlike waiting at a restaurant, you would have to move around a lot. In a cocktail, the guests usually form small cliques among themselves and you must navigate through these small cliques to serve each guest. Each guest has their own preference, so you have to get as many drinks and finger foods on your trays as is possible, without making it look unpleasant."

He stopped to take a breath and continued.

"You would also have to read the mood and understand what particular drink would fit a particular person, based on the vibes they’re exhibiting."

"Eh? Why not just ask them what drink they’ll want?" Dong Wang asked with a raised brow.

"No, no." The old butler uncle shook his head. "Your interactions with the guests must not last more than three seconds. You have to be quick, minimal and invisible. Don’t make conversation with anyone, and don’t allow anyone to make conversation with you."

Then, he added with a smile. "Of course, this does not apply to a young lady on a wheelchair. If she wants to talk to any of you, then you must stop whatever you’re doing and answer her. If she wants to strike a conversation, even better. Try your best to keep the conversation flowing and as enjoyable as possible for as you can, without making it awkward."

"Okay...?" Liang Yang nodded his head at the strange command. Then he asked. "Do we get tips?"

The main reason he had accepted the job was for money, and, if there was a chance to make more money, how could he let it pass by?

"Well, it’s considered rude to directly ask for one." The old butler said. He continued. "But, if someone gives you a tip, then do not stand on ceremony and directly accept it."

"Fair." Xue ’Kevin’ Waoming nodded his head.

He was looking forward to the tips to see if he could gather enough to buy himself a set of dumbbells.

"Ahem, as I was saying," The old butler uncle continued. "The only time you would need to speak to the guest is when you offer them a drink. A simple, ’Drink, sir? Or Drink, Ma’am? ’ would suffice. Do not call anyone there uncle or aunty!"

"Hmm. Is it because it would make them feel their actual age? After all, rich people fear aging a lot and like it when they look young. At least, it’s like that on TV." Tian Hua said thoughtlessly.

"....." The old butler uncle had the corners of his lips twitch. "Whatever you understand, young friend. As I was saying, you would have to constantly revolve around the guests, pass the finger foods and the drinks, and avoid spillage. Most of the people who would be here are powerful enough to make your life very hard if you were to spill a drink and stain their designer clothing."

"That happens in real life??" Xiao Shen raised a brow and tilted his head slightly.

Offending some ultra rich fuerdai by accident, making them to use their powerful family influence to try and make your life a living hell, was this not the most cliche plot of a badly written urban novel?

"Indeed, young friend. It does happen. Many people have been brought to ruin because they offended someone who they should not have offended." The old butler uncle said as he opened another door and made way for them all to enter.

It was a large, spacious hall with an even more chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling. He glanced at them and spread his hands. "This, young friends, is where the cocktail party would be held."

Xiao Shen, Tian Hua, Dong Wang, Xue Waoming and Liang Yang all looked at the large hall that was comparable to their lecture halls at the university. It even had a balcony and stairs leading to an upper layer!

Seventy to hundred people would be able to fit into this room, with space to spare!

They turned their heads and looked at the old butler uncle.

Uncle, are you sure it’s a cocktail party and not a royal ball?!

There was a big difference between serving fifty guests and serving two hundred!
