Chapter 102: Pride Before The Fall [Part 4]
Chapter 102: Pride Before The Fall [Part 4]
’Why?!’ Travis cursed internally. ’This isn’t what was supposed to happen!’
Just as he wondered about how things ended up this way, one of his men screamed before he was blown away by a lightning bolt.
Blitz jumped from tree branch to tree branch, zapping the enemies one by one.
Leone might have agreed to send his warriors to capture Travis, but he still felt a bit anxious.
Because of this, he ordered Blitz to whittle down the enemies from a safe distance. That way, when Ulric, Jason, and their warriors arrived at the scene, they would at least not be at a disadvantage.
The Bloodriver Serpent, Russel, was also following the group, looking for an opportunity to strike.
Since it was impossible to travel inside the forest while mounted on horses, Travis and his men were forced to travel on foot.
It was then when Blitz started attacking them with lightning bolts, forcing them to use the trees as cover.
Though that was futile.
The squirrel was very quick on its feet, jumping from tree to tree. The moment it saw an opening, it would immediately zap its target, making them scream in pain as they collapsed on the ground.
The Darkmane Tribe warriors who were protecting their Young Lord now numbered less than a hundred and fifty.
They all felt anxious, for they had no idea who or what had been attacking them, and from where it could come from.
Blitz made sure to conceal itself whenever it was unleashing its attacks from a distance. That way, no one would think that the one hunting them down was a squirrel!
"Don’t worry, Young Lord," Bertram said calmly. "We will escape this forest no matter what. I, Bertram, swear upon my life to protect you."
"Thank you, Bertram," Travis replied. "I’ll count on you."
Bertram was one of the elite warriors of the Darkmane Tribe whom his father had personally sent to protect him.
This was also why Travis could still remain composed despite the anxiety in his heart.
He didn’t care how many of his warriors died.
As long as he managed to escape the forest, all of their sacrifices would not be in vain!
Suddenly, Bertram looked in the distance, his face turning solemn.
"What is it, Bertram?" Travis asked.
"Shh..." Bertram placed a finger on his lips as he ordered his warriors to prepare for battle.
His heightened senses that were honed from many battles were telling him that many people were approaching their location.
Of course, he didn’t toss aside the possibility that these people might also be allies who were trying to escape the forest like them.
However, his instincts were telling him that he needed to be cautious because they were still within the enemy’s territory.
Suddenly, a thunderous roar erupted from behind them, catching everyone completely off guard.
An armored Dire Bear burst from the underground out of nowhere, crashing into the nearest warrior and mauling him without mercy.
The pitiful man could only scream in fear as the bear’s claws tore him apart, killing him in just a few seconds.
Rising onto its hind legs, the Dire Bear started its savage rampage, tearing through the formation with unstoppable force.
Fury was normally scary as it was. But now that it was clad in a spiked armor made of steel, it had truly become a monster born only to kill!
The armored Dire Bear’s presence shook the warriors at their very core. Their movements faltered, and fear gripped their hearts.
Some broke ranks and fled in panic, only to be struck down by the Bloodriver Serpent, Russel, who had been waiting for an opportunity to strike.
But the two of them weren’t alone.
Jason’s familiar, a White Lunar Wolf, also joined the fray.
If Fury was a monster of pure raw strength, and the Bloodriver Serpent, Russel, was a fast and deadly killer, then the Lunar Wolf, Fenn, was a combination of both of their strengths.
It was strong, fast, and very deadly.
Its stats were higher than Fury and Russel thanks to the special blessing that Jason received after he became Leone’s vassal.
With these three Familiars catching everyone’s attention, they had completely forgotten about the threat that they were preparing for earlier.
As if waiting for that perfect moment, dozens of Raptors swiftly burst forth from behind the trees, lunging at the barbarians with ruthless, predatory fury.
And right behind them, Ulric, Jason, and the other warriors of the Aslan Tribe shouted their war cries and joined the fight!
Daedalus had proposed that Fury, Fenn, and Russel first distract their enemies before ordering the Raptors to attack and cause further chaos within the enemy’s formation.
Ulric charged in Travis’ direction, raising his war axe to kill everyone in his path.
Jason had also transformed into a white Werewolf, increasing his stats drastically.
All of Leone’s people received a massive boost in their stats as long as they were fighting inside their territory.
This gave them an edge against their opponents, who were completely overwhelmed by the attacks coming from behind and in front of them.
Bertram tried to rally his men, but they were no longer listening to his commands.
Everyone fought for their lives, and their dying screams drowned out Bertram’s orders.
"Damn you, Ulric!" Bertram roared in anger as he clashed with the barbarian chieftain.
He might look younger now, but Bertram still remembered the first time he saw the Chieftain of the Alborin Tribe.
That was why he recognized Ulric right away when the latter came charging at them like a bull, hacking anyone that blocked his path.
When the two warriors clashed, a grunt escaped Bertram’s lips when he was pushed back by their initial collision.
Ulric’s strength had overwhelmed him, almost making him lose his balance. But as a battle-honed warrior, he stood his ground as he used his sword to stop his opponent’s momentum.
However, Ulric couldn’t be stopped.
Every swing of the chieftain’s axe was so strong that it created sparks upon contact. To make matters worse, Bertram was unable to stop Ulric’s advance and was pushed back repeatedly. And that was even with his expertise with the sword.
It only took him three strikes to understand that they had no chance of winning.
If they continued to fight, only death awaited them. Since that was the case, Bertram only did what he could do to preserve his life, as well as his Young Lord’s life.
"We surrender!" Bertram shouted. "We surrender! Men, drop your weapons at once! Stop fighting!"
As if to reinforce his statement, Bertram threw down his sword and raised his hands. His duty was to ensure his Young Lord’s life, even if it meant that he had to beg his enemy for mercy and forgiveness.
Since they didn’t have the courage to continue fighting, the surviving warriors hurriedly threw their weapons away and raised their hands in surrender.
In just a short period of time, less than fifty warriors of the Darkmane Tribe remained alive.
If the fighting lasted for a few more minutes, all of them would be dead.
The only exception would be Travis, who was now shaking like a leaf while being held by Jason in his White Wolf Sovereign form.
All eyes turned toward the young man, who commanded the forces of the Darkmane Tribe that invaded their domain.
Travis’ composure had shattered the moment the white Werewolf grabbed hold of him, causing him to pee his pants because he thought that he was about to die.
But fortunately, he was spared from death... at least for now.
Death was too merciful of a punishment for his crimes, and Leone would make sure that Travis would remember this incident for the rest of his life.
