Chapter 398: The Final Battle (II)
Chapter 398: The Final Battle (II)
On the arena floor, Kayden was motionless and his breathing was shallow.
For a moment, it looked like it was over. But then, something changed.
His body began to glow, then came the streaks of lightning again but this time, it was Yellow.
The glow grew brighter and the air around him crackled as the frost on his skin began to melt.
The crowd gasped.
Kayden’s eyes opened, and they were glowing with yellow light.
Then his body erupted and Yyellow lightning exploded outward in all directions, shattering the ice around him and sending shockwaves across the arena.
The ground beneath his feet cracked and splintered, and the air itself seemed to ignite.
Kayden stood in the center of the storm, his body radiating with streaks of yellow lightning.
His breathing steadied, and when he looked up at Syra, his eyes were filled with raw power.
High above in the elevated section, Orion had a wide smile spread across his face.
"That’s my boy," he said.
In the Dragonhold section, Thamoryn turned to Oberon. "I see why you chose Kayden now," she said. "Did you always know your son had stepped into the domain of gods?"
Oberon’s expression remained calm. "I knew he was doing some secret training with a god. So I had suspicions he would grow accordingly."
He paused, then added, "But take a look at the elf. She doesn’t seem fazed."
Thamoryn’s gaze shifted to Syra, who stood across the arena from Kayden. Her expression was unchanged and there was no fear in her eyes.
"Hmm," Thamoryn muttered.
And in the next instant, Kayden was in front of Syra, his fist charged with yellow lightning as he drove toward her chest.
Syra’s eyes widened, she moved her hand to summon the protective orb, but she was too slow.
Kayden’s fist connected and the force of the blow sent Syra flying backward across the arena. Her body tumbled through the air, hit the ground hard, and rolled several times before coming to a stop near the far wall.
Dust and debris scattered around her and the crowd gasped. This was the first time anyone had ever registered the elf being hit.
Kayden didn’t wait either. His body dissolved into yellow lightning, and he reappeared above where Syra had landed.
His leg was raised, and he descended with a drop kick aimed directly at her.
But the moment his foot was about to connect, Syra vanished.
Kayden’s kick struck empty ground, and the impact cratered the surface beneath him.
He then turned his gaze to see that Syra had reappeared on the opposite side of the arena.
-
In the Ravens Grave section, Ursula’s eyes went wide. "She knows teleportation too?"
Elena on her part had a confused expression. "Syra’s spells make no sense. Are these supplementary spells or plain magic? Does she have different magics?"
Katherine, seated nearby, shook her head. "I honestly don’t know."
-
On the arena floor, the wound on Syra’s chest began to heal. Blood had been seeping through her robes, but now the flow stopped and the injury beneath it sealed up as though it had never been there.
Within seconds, she looked as good as new.
Oberon’s eyes widened in shock. "What kind of magic is that?"
In the elevated section, Arianna turned to Aiden.
"Is this all because Syra used to be the Dragon before you?"
Aiden smiled and shook his head. "No, my love."
He paused, then added, "The host before Syra gave her the system for one reason."
Laela and Arianna both looked at him, waiting.
"Because she was the most powerful mage of their time."
And their eyes widened in surprise.
On the arena floor, Kayden’s body shot into the sky with yellow lightning crackling around him more intensely. He raised his right hand above his head, and the air around him began to vibrate.
Then, from the sky, a massive bolt of yellow lightning descended and struck into his raised palm.
The bolt had been caught by his hands and right then began elongating and taking more prominent shape.
The lightning formed into a spear of pure energy that stretched several meters long, and the air around it distorted from the sheer heat and force radiating off it.
-
Thera leaned toward Orion and said, "Isn’t that similar to your lightning bolts as well?"
Orion smiled and nodded. "It is."
-
Syra looked up at Kayden. She could sense the power radiating from the spear was immense and far beyond anything she had faced so far in this war.
Then she raised her hand toward the sky, and blue magic circles began to form above her head.
The circles stacked on top of each other, forming a tower of translucent barriers that stretched upward toward the sky.
By the time she was done, there were over twenty layers of shields stacked above her, glowing with this blue light.
Kayden gritted his teeth and hurled the spear downward like a falling star, trailing yellow lightning in its wake. The air screamed as it tore through the atmosphere, and the ground beneath Syra trembled.
The spear struck the first shield and it shattered instantly. Then the second which shattered as well.
Then continuously. One by one, the shields broke apart.
Syra gritted her teeth and poured more magic into the remaining shields as her raised hand trembled from the strain.
The spear continued its descent and by the time it reached the last shield, cracks were forming across the surface. The barrier was struggling to hold.
Syra’s hand shook, and sweat dripped down her face.
The spear pushed forward.
The shield cracked further.
Then—
BOOM!
The final shield exploded in a massive burst of light and energy.
The force of the explosion rocked the entire arena and a shockwave spread across the colosseum, forcing people in the stands to shield their faces.
When the dust began to clear, Syra was breathing hard. Smoke rose from her body, and her robes were scorched.
Blood dripped from a cut on her forehead, and her hand was still raised and trembling .
But she was still standing.
Kayden’s eyes widened. "That should have been enough."
-
In the stands, there was both tension and excitement as people leaned forward.
Oberon was totally taken back by that. "How is she still standing?"
-
Syra muttered under her breath. "I see. So that’s how it is."
She stood slowly, and as she did, her magic aura erupted from her body in a visible wave of power.
The wounds on her skin began to heal once more and blood on her forehead dried and vanished.
The crowd erupted into shocked murmurs, and Oberon shot to his feet. "What is this?!"
-
In the elevated section, Aiden had this smile on his face .
"Her true magic is Counter Magic," he said.
His wives turned to look at him.
"Counter Magic?" Laela repeated.
Aiden nodded. "While Counter Magic in itself has no true form, it’s a magic of elevation."
He paused, then explained. "The way it works is to elevate whatever other spells are within Syra’s arsenal to match her opponent’s power and grow to overwhelm it."
Laela’s eyes widened. "A magic that buffs the others?"
Aiden nodded. "You can put it that way. But at the end of the day, it is only magic close to, or on the threshold of, divinity. And as such, it has a limit as well."
He paused, then added, "Right now, this is the max level."
-
On the arena floor, Syra looked at Kayden and grinned.
"I thank you," she said.
Kayden frowned.
Syra continued. "In my lifetime as mortal, no one was able to make me reach this point. But you have done so."
Kayden gritted his teeth.
Another bolt of yellow lightning formed in his hand, crackling and roaring with power. He pulled his arm back and hurled it toward Syra.
This time, Syra raised her hand and formed only one shield.
The bolt struck it head-on, and the shield cracked. Fractures raced across its surface, and for a moment, it looked as though it would shatter.
But then the bolt dissipated.
The shield held just long enough to absorb the attack, then collapsed into fragments of light.
In the elevated section, Aiden said calmly, "Right now, they are equals."
