This was a lesson learned from experience.

The sky gradually darkened.

The light strips on the courtyard walls lit up. Zhou Li had also installed light strips around the garden's iron fence. Once turned on, the lights sparkled, creating a wonderful atmosphere in concert with the lights on the trees. Music even began to play.

The smoke from the barbecue wafted into the air.

A group of friends ate, drank, and had fun here, the festivities continuing late into the night.

Baozi and Cotton Swab ended up sleeping over at Zhou Li's place, since the main house was only occupied by two Little Demons, leaving several rooms empty.

Meanwhile, Zhou Li, holding a small gift box, used the pretext of giving a gift to slip into Brother Nan's room under Huai Xu's disdainful gaze. He walked right in through the unlocked door and saw Brother Nan, freshly bathed and wearing light clothes, lying on her bed scrolling through TikTok.

"Go on!"

"Happy Birthday!"

"Didn't you say it already?"

"I got you a gift," Zhou Li said, smiling. "Did you receive any other gifts?"

"Nope. Your cousin just gave me a crappy rock she said she picked it up by Sailimu Lake, claiming it would bless me with a lifetime of peace." Brother Nan frowned at him. "I told you not to give me gifts! If you give me one, then next year I'll have to think of what to give you. It's a vicious cycle that's going to drive me crazy!"

"It's okay."

"You think it's okay just because you say it is?"

"Today is the Qixi Festival!"

"I heard online that Qixi isn't Valentine's Day," Brother Nan said. "That's supposed to be some other festival."

"Ignore them. They're all just single."

"What did you buy?"

"Here."

Zhou Li handed her the wrapped box.

Brother Nan took it with a frown, not looking too pleased, and muttered, "Now I have to unwrap it myself…"

She quickly removed the wrapping. It looked like some kind of clothing.

Brother Nan opened the bag and found a plush hat. It was light pink with two bunny ears, and on each side, there were squeezable airbags that made the ears stand up. Besides being just a hat, it was identical to the bunny ear outfits she had bought for the Cotton Swab Package.

Brother Nan froze, completely bewildered.

Zhou Li explained, "You bought these for them but didn't get one for yourself. My heart ached a little that you didn't have one…"

Before he could finish, Brother Nan interrupted him.

Staring blankly at Zhou Li, her tone laced with disbelief, she slowly asked,

"It's my birthday…

"And you bought a gift for yourself?

"Smooth move, Zhou Li!"

Zhou Li chuckled softly, then pretended not to hear. With a warm smile, he took the hat from her hands and placed it on her head. He squeezed the airbags on the sides, watching in amusement as the bunny ears on Brother Nan's head popped up and down. Then he continued explaining, "It might not be suitable to wear now, but autumn will be here soon. You'll find it useful during the coldest part of winter or when you go back to Yi Province for the New Year…"

Brother Nan, her large, clear eyes wide and unblinking, still stared at him. Still somewhat in shock, she said,

"So slick..."

Brother Nan, what are you talking about?

Zhou Li feigned complete ignorance, fully immersing himself in the role of a caring boyfriend or, alternatively, a loyal Little Brother.

The Little Brother glanced back at the drawn curtains and asked his Big Brother,

"Big Brother, did you turn on the shield?"

Brother Nan's gaze grew even more astonished. "Huh? What are you dreaming of? Someone might think it's your damn birthd— Mmph!"

A minute later, Zhou Li pulled back, still hugging Brother Nan, their faces very close. "Brother Nan, you swore," he said.

She really shouldn't swear.
