Chapter 524 - 503 Reluctant Words_1
Xia Jing would never believe that her husband saw marrying her as a stroke of luck. Maybe the words he’s saying now, he will eventually realize, are just a lie to deceive him.
For Zhang Zhentian, the whole world had already collapsed. All she wanted was to return to her father’s side, but she had destroyed that possibility herself. What right or reason did she have to lament her family, now shattered by her own actions? Sometimes she regretted deeply why, despite giving so much, she ended up with these results. She didn’t ask for much, yet it seemed she could never attain what she sought; perhaps the thing she longed for most would forever be out of reach.
"I hope you never again tell such insincere lies" she pleaded. "Do you know? I don’t believe a single word you’re saying today because it feels like you’re just trying to trick me. You’ve told too many lies in the past, causing me to lose all faith in you. Since there is no trust left between us, what’s the point of being together? It only leads to more hurt for both of us!"
"I could have done anything for you, carrying on without a single thought for myself," she continued with a sense of loss. "But now I can’t do that anymore, because the day you abandoned me was the day I realized I had to change. I can’t keep on being so foolish, sacrificing everything for you, because in your eyes, I’ll never get anything back. You’re only after the feeling of happiness you crave in your heart but fail to understand the kind of happiness I long for. Perhaps what I consider happiness is not the same for you, huh?"
She thought, "Too often our values differ dramatically. You don’t love what I love, you don’t wish to protect what I want to protect, and what I value, you look down upon. With such diverging perspectives, how can two people with different values live together? Letting go is the best outcome for both of us. If we both let go, we might still have a chance at happiness. But if we cling to these issues, our individual happiness will only be destroyed by each other..."
"Every word I’ve said to you today is the truth," he replied desperately. "All I want is to be sincerely with you. Being able to be with you is the greatest fortune of my life, this heart-felt truth comes from deep inside me. Yet, you choose to doubt me, to distrust my words, thinking they’re all lies. Do you know how much that hurts me? I ask for so little, just to be by your side!"
"You always think my words are deceitful lies, meant to lure you back," he continued, trying to express his sincerity. "Am I really that despicable in your eyes? Do you see me as someone who tells lies relentlessly to achieve his ends? Ask yourself, during all the years we’ve been together, have I ever wronged you? No matter how wilful you got, I always treated you as my dearest. But have you ever treated me the same? Have you ever truly wanted to be with me for a lifetime?"
He sighed, "Why do you keep spewing lies, deceiving me time and again? Does our relationship not even withstand these lies? If you truly believed in me, you wouldn’t need to weave one lie after another to deceive me. Your fabrications prove that in your heart, you have chosen not to trust me. I don’t care for a marriage without trust. Gradually, I’ve come to realize that, no matter what, I hope you can be by my side. All I want is for you to be there for me, forever and always!"
Xia Jing let out a sigh; she didn’t know how to respond. She was aware that any action she had taken would be hard for anyone to accept, yet this man had sacrificed so much for her. What right did she have to ask for more? Nevertheless, she was persistently greedy, always reaching out to take more from the one she loves, exploiting her love to do unforgivable things over and over again. But could he truly love her unconditionally and give endlessly?
She knew in her heart that her husband loved her very much—perhaps even more than he loved himself. However, she couldn’t turn back, for if she chose this path, turning back would only lead to failure. She didn’t want to be mocked or be seen as a woman who couldn’t keep her word. She wanted everyone to clearly see that she could live without her husband and wanted to prove to the world that she was the strongest woman. She needed the world to understand that a woman didn’t necessarily need her husband to survive; as long as she was capable, she could have her own sky wherever she went.
"Please, don’t deceive me with insincere lies anymore. Starting today, we will have no further contact. I won’t reach out to you because it only revives the pain in my heart, a pain not easily forgotten with a few words. The hurt you’ve caused can’t be so easily dismissed, nor can your warm words just obliterate the things you’ve done. You should be aware of your actions, you who are a hundred times clearer about them than anyone else. Things done can’t be forgotten at will, and clear traces aren’t so easily erased!"
"I’ve laid it out so clearly for you today, and yet you still choose to sever all ties with me?" he asked, filled with desperation and hope. "Is the thought of living with me truly worse than death to you? Can’t you just put aside your pride, forsake your so-called dignity, and try to live with me again? Wouldn’t it be better to give us another chance? Why must we choose a path from which there’s no return?"
