Chapter 1030: What’s Wrong With Her?
Vanessa Sterling paused her action of closing the door; she thought Miles Sterling was calling her. When she hesitated and opened the door again to peek out, she saw Miles Sterling talking to the manager from earlier: "Send some supper to my room later."
"Alright."
Vanessa felt a bit awkward; turns out he wasn’t calling her.
While talking to the manager, Miles Sterling had been watching Vanessa Sterling’s reaction with a sidelong glance.
He noticed that when Vanessa realized he wasn’t talking to her, a momentary look of disappointment flashed across her eyes.
Having registered Vanessa’s reaction, Miles Sterling finally gathered the courage, and just as Vanessa was about to close the door, he turned and walked over to her door.
Vanessa’s action of closing the door stopped once more.
"...Got time to chat?" Miles Sterling stood outside the door, not reaching out to block it.
Vanessa hesitated for two seconds, slowly widened the gap of the door, looked up at Miles Sterling, and pursed her lips before responding: "...Let me change my clothes."
Miles Sterling breathed a sigh of relief, nodded, and said, "Alright, I’ll wait for you outside."
Only then did Vanessa close the door and return to the room. As she crouched by her suitcase to find clothes, she started to feel conflicted about whether she should have agreed.
If it were the past, she wouldn’t have thought twice before rejecting such a proposal from Miles Sterling.
Because in the past, Miles Sterling was like a bomb that could explode at any moment to her.
But now, the sense of danger that Miles Sterling brought seemed to have unknowingly faded away.
With mixed emotions, Vanessa changed her clothes, hesitated for several seconds at the door, took a deep breath, and finally turned the doorknob.
Miles Sterling stood just outside the door, looking calm, but he too felt anxious inside.
At the sound of the door opening, his heart skipped a beat.
Vanessa glanced at him, warily looked around the corridor, and finally stepped out of the room.
"...What do you want?"
"There’s a terrace nearby; shall we go there and talk?"
Vanessa looked in the direction Miles pointed, then refused, saying, "Let’s talk here; I’m going to rest soon."
"Heading back tomorrow?"
"Yes."
"I’m going to Rivia tomorrow; I’ll stay there for a few days before going over."
Vanessa’s gaze dodged as she coldly said, "Why tell me that?"
Miles Sterling stared at Vanessa in silence for several seconds before saying, "Afraid you might overthink if you don’t see me for a few days."
Vanessa’s mind buzzed, and she swallowed nervously, saying, "What’s... that got to do with me? If there’s nothing else, I’ll be resting."
After speaking, Vanessa practically fled, unlocking the door with her fingerprint, and slipped back inside without looking back.
Watching the closed door, the image of Vanessa’s flushed face lingered before his eyes. Miles Sterling smiled and said to the door, "Goodnight."
Leaning against the door’s back, Vanessa stiffened; that light "Goodnight" seemed to transcend the door, reaching her heart and lingering in her ears for a long time.
She placed her hand over her wildly beating heart, hurriedly walked to the bed, and wrapped herself in the blanket.
"Thump—thump—thump—"
The heartbeat resonated through the bed frame, seemingly clearer and more intense than before.
Vanessa released the blanket, lay flat on the bed, and stared at the dark ceiling, her mind in chaos.
What’s happening to her...
