Chapter 298: The Dawn Star’s Wish (II)
Chapter 298: The Dawn Star’s Wish (II)
"Then, can you help me with something, little faerie?"
"Anything! I’m always here for you!" the little faerie declared. "You’re like a son to me, you know?"
"My body will explode soon enough. I’ve overused my power, and the energy inside me has been too corrupted and will destroy itself to maintain balance in this world," the man said. "But I... I am really scared, little faerie. I’m scared that I’d die alone and in agony like my father. I’m scared that I will continue to be the same Dawn Star once I’ve reincarnated. All I want is to live peacefully, surrounded by people who love me."
"And most importantly, I want to have a mother in my next life—the one who’d love me and guide me so I won’t turn into the same monster..."
"A... mother?" the little faerie was astonished. "Then, you..."
"I will pray to the Goddess of the Moon for the last time. I just want a mother in my next incarnation, and I... I want it to be you, little faerie," the man stated. "You’ve raised me all this time, accompanied me since I was just a baby. You even left the faerie land just so you could be with me."
"You are the family I have aside from my father," the man added. "So, in my next life, I want you to be my mother instead. I want you to raise me right, so I won’t crave others’ love and end up using my power for bad things."
The little faerie was stunned. She went quiet for a while, and the man lowered his head. "Is that a no?"
"Of course, I am willing!" the little faerie snapped out of her daze and flew towards the man’s face and hugged his nose. "Sael, I will be your mother in your next life! I will raise you right no matter what, so you won’t have to suffer anymore. I will do anything, just so you can break through this cycle of suffering!"
The man nodded as his body began to emanate a bright light from within. Then he said weakly,"Do you hear that, Goddess? She wants to be my mother in my next life. This is my last wish. Make us a family, so I won’t have to suffer anymore."
And after that, the bright light engulfed him entirely, forcing Jojo to close his eyes, but he heard the explosion, killing both himself and the little faerie together.
Jojo opened his eyes after a while and looked at the Goddess. "Was that me?"
"Mhm. That’s you in your past life, and your Mommy," Selene replied. "You’ve been doing the same thing for a long, long time, Jojo. But this was the first time you actually asked for something else instead of just wanting to die."
"So I granted your wish. You are reborn as the usual Sael, and your mother is not reborn as a little faerie stuck in the faerie land, but as a half-human who can raise you eventually."
The Moon Goddess patted Jojo’s head and said,"It seems that it’s working. You’re a very good boy now. You are kind, smart, and understanding. I’m sure you won’t hurt innocent people like in your past life."
Jojo listened to all this, but in his one-track little mind, he still had the same question,"But why did Mommy have to die?"
"Because it is also part of her wish to break you and your father’s cycle as destructive cursed beings. She also had her own wish before her death, you know?" Selene said. "She didn’t mind using her life if that meant you and your father wouldn’t have to suffer in this never-ending cycle."
"And she succeeded. In exchange for her life, you and your father will be free from the chains of the cursed stars and live a happy life," Selene said.
But Jojo was not happy at all. His eyes were pooling with tears as he said,"But I want my Mommy. I cannot be happy if I don’t have Mommy..."
"Goddess, can Jojo exchange my life for Mommy? I want her to live..."
"That’s not possible, little one," the Moon Goddess sighed. "And your mother wouldn’t agree as well. To her, your happiness and future are the most important. That’s why she discarded her divinity as the Darling of the Earth, just so you wouldn’t have the side effects of being a Dawn Star."
Jojo lowered his head and began sobbing,"But Goddess, I am not happy now. I don’t feel good without Mommy..."
"Oh, don’t cry, Jojo. Of course, I didn’t summon you here just to give you bad news," Selene said. She pointed at Jojo’s necklace—the same pendant that transported him to his mother’s side before. "You will be able to meet your mother again, but you have to promise me that you will protect her this time, no matter what. She has sacrificed everything just for you. It is only fair for you to protect her, right?"
"Of course! Jojo will grow big and strong, and protect Mommy no matter what!" Jojo vowed. Despite his young age, this vow truly came from within his heart. "And I will protect baby sister, and Daddy too! I will be good, Goddess! So please... please bring back Mommy..."
Selene wiped the tears from Jojo’s cheek and smiled,"Alright then, close your eyes, and remember your Mommy with love. I will tell Grandma Tree what to do, alright?"
Jojo nodded. He closed his eyes and began recalling all the good things that his mother had given him. But it was too much—to the point that Jojo got confused about which one to remember most, because every memory he had of his mother was the best.
Thus, in his heart, Jojo simply recalled his mother’s smile when she married his father—that joyful, loving smile when they officially became a family of three.
And within the depths of his heart, Jojo said:
’Mommy, I love you. Daddy loves you. Baby sister loves you too. Please come back. Come back and love me again. You promised to watch me until I’m big and strong.’
