Chapter 157: Sending a Letter
Chapter 157: Sending a Letter
"What the hell is going on here?"
As soon as Loren arrived at the post office, he found the place in chaos, with all sorts of strange-looking people smashing things inside.
"Master Mentor..."
The moment Loren appeared, the person in charge of the post office grabbed the hem of his clothes with tear-filled eyes, as if she had suffered some great injustice, treating Loren as her savior. It even took her a long time to realize her current behavior was quite presumptuous.
"What happened?"
Loren didn't bother with her lack of decorum;
clearly, there were more important matters at hand.
"These people came to the post office early this morning, not only smashing the facilities but also opening people's letters."
"..."
Loren glanced at their appearances. The leader was a fat man with a face full of pimples wearing white socks, followed by an old man in a red dress and a female fatso with a buzz cut.
"Why didn't you call someone to arrest them for treatment?"Loren had already made the method for dealing with such people public yesterday. Surely they couldn't still be uncontrollable?
"They have backing. The Enforcement Team can't arrest them..."
If anyone else had come, she definitely wouldn't have dared to speak out. After all, officials protecting each other was common sense. If she reported it, she might actually get arrested for bypassing the chain of command.
But since it was Loren who came, she chose to reveal everything without hesitation. That was Loren's reputation.
"Where's Clemens gone?"
At times like this, holding the highest-ranking person accountable was the simplest and most direct method. Clemens was the highest-ranking official here.
"Who?"
Hearing the name, the post office manager was momentarily stunned. Loren then realized someone of her rank probably wouldn't know the Bishop's name.
"That new Bishop. Where did he go?"
"After Bishop Clemens announced the situation regarding the Rainbow Plague, he returned to the Nofica Theocracy. The Rainbow Plague is more severe there;
he went back to handle it..."
"Alright."
Now Loren understood why they still dared to be so brazen. It seemed their backing wasn't small either. With Clemens gone, no one could control them. There really were quite a few infected by the Rainbow Plague.
The more well-off and sheltered from the world people were, the more susceptible they were to the Rainbow Plague infection. That was also why so many high-ranking individuals got infected.
"Help me write a letter. Just write anything inside, then put it in an envelope."
"Oh, okay."
Although she didn't know what Loren was planning, out of trust in him, she chose to comply.
"Here."
The post office manager worked quickly, finishing the letter for Loren promptly and handing it over.
"Thank you. Rest assured, I'll handle things here."
After thanking her, Loren took the letter and walked into the interior of the post office.
"N-no... you're welcome..."
Her speech even became stuttered. She had long heard legends about Loren, but she never expected Loren himself to be so gentle.
Under her admiring gaze, Loren stepped into the post office, confronting that group of freaks. At that moment, they were tearing open letters containing others' heartfelt thoughts one by one, mocking the contents inside, occasionally saying these old fossils all deserved to die.
"What are you all doing here?"
Loren asked knowingly, still holding the newly written letter in his hand.
"We suspect these people have offended our disadvantaged minority groups in their letters, so we're here to check."
They also recognized Loren's identity, so they spoke relatively politely. The postal worker lying on the floor nearby indicated they weren't so polite with others.
Even facing Loren wasn't much better;
they just didn't directly resort to violence. They even added:
"These old fossils are all inferior beings who deserve to be slaughtered. The world should belong to us, the awakened."
The speaker was the leading fat man, the fat on his belly still trembling. But the others in the group looked at him as if he were some peerless beauty, making Loren feel a wave of nausea.
"Even mine needs checking?"
"Of course, after all, you're not one of the awakened."
The Rainbow Plague had an intelligence-reducing ability;
otherwise, these people wouldn't be so brazen. This also gave the infected sufficient destructive power to truly dismantle the enemy from within.
The people of Gedlan had only just had enough to eat for a short while before so many got infected. Loren didn't dare imagine how severe it must be over in the Kingdom of Anselm.
The fat man rudely tore open Loren's envelope and read the contents aloud:
"Master Mentor is so handsome... What kind of nonsense is this you wrote?"
As soon as the words left his mouth, Loren snatched back his envelope and conveniently pulled out a match to light it.
"There. You peeked at important confidential information I wrote in the letter. I suspect you are a spy from the Plague Church, here to steal secrets from the Bountiful Church. I hereby sentence you and your accomplices for the crime of apostasy."
The crime of apostasy. This was a sin second only to blasphemy. Once tainted with it, death was inevitable.
This was also the reason Loren went through this whole charade. If it were just treating the Rainbow Plague, at most they'd get a beating. But after being branded with this label by Loren, they all had to die.
Perhaps their crimes didn't warrant death, but they disgusted Loren, so they had to die. Loren also had the authority to pass judgment here. Even if they appealed to the Pope of the Anselm Theocracy, it would be useless. Unless an Angel representing the Orthodox Gods intervened, what Loren said was absolute.
"It's just reading a letter... surely that's not apostasy..."
Such a heavy charge suddenly crashing down on them finally sobered them up a bit.
"Besides, you have no evidence."
The leading fat man's tone suddenly softened. People behind him were already trying to run.
"Bang!"
Loren fired a shot at the ground, forcibly freezing the person trying to flee in place.
"After viewing the confidential letter, you actually burned such an important document to destroy evidence, adding another count to your crimes. Wait here for the Church to deal with you."
If the Enforcement Team came, it meant there was still room for argument. But if Church personnel came, there really was no room left at all.
"That person..."
Loren turned to look at the post office manager. Stars seemed to twinkle in her eyes as she looked at Loren. Hearing him call her, she quickly replied:
"My name is Erika! Is there anything you need me to do?"
"Go call the Church people over. Say I sent you. I'll wait here."
"Yes!"
Upon receiving Loren's order, Erika scrambled out, hopped onto her little bicycle, and rushed toward the Church.
The distance to the Church wasn't too far;
it probably wouldn't take much time.
Watching death draw closer and closer, they were truly scared now:
"Master Mentor, we were wrong. Next time we..."
"Shh..." Loren made a gesture for quiet. "You're not admitting you were wrong;
you just know you're going to die."
