Chapter 347: Stay away from me!
Chapter 347: Stay away from me!
She knew that Lady June was her biological mother, even if they hadn’t actually discussed it at length, almost like neither of them saw a need to address it openly.
Which was all the more reason why Violet realized that she needed to know.
"It matters! I want to know!" she responded, her voice firm despite the tightness in her chest, realizing that knowing her current teacher was a serial murderer was necessary information.
"I need to know!" she added.
Lady June stopped moving. Then, slowly, she turned and began to move closer to Violet. Her black hair was glossy and long, falling smoothly down her back. Her features stood out sharply in a way that made her difficult to look away from, even as she stopped directly in front of Violet.
They were close now.
Close enough that Violet could clearly see the faint glint in Lady June’s eyes as she began to speak.
"Yes, I killed them! They were experiments, and I needed their hearts! I fed them, made them stronger, and then harvested their hearts."
Violet felt a sudden ringing in her head, sharp and disorienting. It worried her. Her heart leaped and began to thump violently in her chest as she heard Lady June continue speaking, her tone disturbingly calm.
"It was nothing more than a transaction! It’s what witches do! I would have taken Cain’s heart too, but I spared him!" she said, stating it as if it were a gift.
"I don’t kill children!" she added, like that sentence alone should be her saving grace.
Violet was completely stumped, unable to speak. She fixed her gaze on Lady June, whose smile only seemed to widen as they stood facing each other, squared off. Both women were almost the same height, making the moment feel even more confrontational.
"You look at me like I’m a monster!" Lady June pointed out, clearly finding the idea hilarious. She shrugged casually before turning around.
"...stick around long enough and you’ll find out!" she said, already beginning to walk away, gesturing briefly for Violet to follow.
Violet remained frozen in place for several long seconds before she finally found the tenacity to move her feet.
It felt like everything she knew had been rewritten into a language she could no longer process.
Worse still, the facts remained the same.
Lady June was her biological mother, but she was also Cain’s enemy. Cain was her lover, but Violet was currently standing on the enemy’s sidelines.
The only consolation she could cling to was the fact that Cain was no longer in pain. He was no longer dying slowly on a bed while she stood helplessly beside him. For that reason alone, Violet felt like staying with Lady June had been justified.
But even so, she realized she needed to speak to Cain alone.
And it needed to be soon.
Together, they stepped out into the corridor. A few guards were already waiting, standing stiffly near the entrance, even though Lord Eldric was nowhere to be found—something Violet found surprising.
She stood beside Lady June by the main entrance door, but unlike before, she instinctively put more distance between them. Not even glancing at Lady June or meeting her eyes, Violet focused on orienting herself to do nothing but what was demanded of her.
A car soon drove up toward them, stopping directly in front of the entrance. They walked toward it and got inside, the doors closing behind them as they were headed straight for where the meeting was to take place.
It would be a lie if Violet said she wasn’t nervous.
She wrung her fingers together in her lap, unable to stop herself, as a sense of premonition crept over her. Something bad was going to happen. The feeling gnawed at her insides and only grew worse the closer they got to their destination.
She knew Cain well enough to know how angry he would be if he saw her again, considering how their last meeting had ended.
He would be furious just from seeing Lady June again, and Lord Eldric even more so when he realized Violet was standing with them.
The thought made her stomach churn. She tried to force a mostly blank expression onto her face, though it kept flickering back to worry despite her efforts.
Soon enough, they arrived.
They had to stand by the entrance doors, waiting for Lord Eldric to arrive. Violet’s heart raced wildly in her chest simply from the thought that Cain could appear at any moment just from her standing there.
The panic only intensified when the first of the lords began to arrive.
Lady June, for reasons Violet couldn’t understand, felt the need to quietly point them out as they entered.
"Lord Grainger! Him and Lord Eldric don’t really get along, but things will change," she began in a whisper.
Violet followed Lady June’s gaze as the lord passed by.
"Lady Bella. Currently standing in place for her father, Lord Bernard, who is seriously ill! It must be a nasty illness considering the regenerative abilities of werewolves," she pointed out with a sly smile that reached her eyes as Lady Bella walked in.
Lady June bowed her head politely. Violet did the same. The last thing Violet wanted was to be rude.
"Lord Magnus!" Lady June whispered next, saying what Violet already knew, considering the fact that each of them had met her before.
Albeit with a different face.
"He was recently badly injured, but clearly his injuries have improved," Lady June said.
Violet found that hard to believe, since Lord Magnus still looked like he was in pain.
"Lord Fervor!" Lady June continued, pointing out someone Violet didn’t recognize at all.
Lady June kept speaking, and Violet realized she had to be using magic, considering none of the werewolves around them reacted or seemed able to hear her.
How big is her storage? Violet wondered, a frown sliding onto her face. Based on Lady June’s magic consumption alone, it had to be humongous.
Based on everything Violet knew, that should have been impossible.
"Lord William is dead, and Lord Fervor is taking over until Lord William’s child is born and of age! Fiona is the mother!" Lady June added.
Violet felt a sharp jolt of shock at the information. It was the last thing she expected to hear.
She remembered Fiona clearly, even though she still hated her for trying to kill her.
As long as she stays away from me, Violet thought bitterly. Far away!
