Chapter 346: Knowing The truth
Chapter 346: Knowing The truth
"Do we have to pack? We can always visit here when we’re done or tired with our business here!" Violet said with a sigh as she continued to stare out through the window.
They were currently in one of the vampire districts, even though she had no idea which vampire ruled it. The difference here, compared to other places she had seen, was the fact that the moment the sun began to rise in the core district, a thin gaseous substance would be released into the air to obstruct the sun and its rays. The gas spread slowly across the sky, dulling the sunlight before it could fully reach the streets below.
Something she was confident had been created by the ingenuity of witches.
I consider us to be more like magical tech geniuses, Violet thought to herself, deliberately ignoring the archaic and horrid part of potion making and the nasty ingredients that were required for most advanced spells.
Packing didn’t take long, and before long they were ready. Their belongings were minimal, making the process quick. They went ahead and put their things in a car parked outside the building before getting in themselves. Once inside, Lady June signaled for the driver to move.
The car would take them to a small airfield located outside the district, which would then take them straight to Eldric’s territory.
But even as the car drove through the district—filled with humans and vampires with red eyes who managed to coexist peacefully without ripping each other’s throats out, at least on the outside—Violet couldn’t help but think of Cain.
She desperately wanted to see him, while also being aware of the fact that there was a huge possibility that she would see him at Eldric’s territory if there was a general meeting that he had to attend. The thought lingered in her mind as the car continued forward through the crowded streets.
Her heart slightly ached simply from the thought of it, realizing how much she missed his lips and his hands on her body.
How much she missed every part of him.
She glanced at Lady June, who sat beside her in silence, before glancing back out of the car window. As she watched the buildings pass by, she wondered if there was a way she could get away and meet him for a while, even briefly.
Technically, it’s not against the contract that I can’t meet with people, she thought, unable to help how impatient she felt simply from the idea.
She found herself looking forward to seeing his face again and touching him, even if it was only for a while.
It didn’t take more than two hours before they got to Eldric’s mansion, including the journey there. The travel itself was uneventful, and upon arrival, they were welcomed inside without delay. Servants stepped forward to take their bags as soon as they entered.
Lady June and Violet had already made sure to remove their purple eyes, replacing them with brown, especially since witches were banned from interacting with werewolves—at least openly.
It was a rule, one that was punishable by death.
They both kept their real faces, which made it clear to others that they were related, considering the vast resemblance between them. No attempt was made to hide that similarity.
They were shown to separate rooms and allowed time to freshen up before the meeting. They each changed into new clothes. Violet chose a long white gown, while Lady June simply continued to wear her cloak, pairing it with a purple gown, which she usually preferred.
This was considering the fact that the purple color seemed to dominate all of Lady June’s dresses, regardless of location.
Staring at her face in the mirror, Violet knew she looked good, even though her palms felt sweaty to the touch simply from the thought of being able to see Cain again. She adjusted her dress slightly, still focused on her reflection.
She was still staring at herself in the mirror when Lady June stepped closer to her from behind, a knowing smile on her face as she spoke.
"You’re clearly dressed up for a meeting we both know you don’t care to attend!" Lady June said, even as Violet shrugged, trying to make it seem less than it actually was.
"Figured it won’t hurt!" Violet responded without meeting Lady June’s gaze.
She finally turned away from the mirror and started to head toward the door, thinking that was the reason Lady June had come. She assumed the conversation was over until she heard her speak again.
Her tone this time was much more severe and serious than Violet had expected.
"During the meeting, we are simply assistants to Lord Eldric, which means that we’ll do and follow exactly what he says!" Lady June emphasized, continuing to speak just to make sure that Violet understood.
"Even if Cain is there... under no condition are you to address him!" she added.
Violet slowly nodded her head, fully understanding what she meant.
She didn’t like it, aware that somehow Eldric was the reason why Cain’s parents were dead, even if she didn’t know the details surrounding it. The knowledge sat uncomfortably with her.
She recalled the last conversation she had with Cain, where he had pointed out the fact that Lady June had killed his parents, something Violet still found difficult to come to terms with.
She had made a contract, one she felt was binding on her, and until she was knowledgeable enough to bind it herself, she had to stay by Lady June’s side whether she wanted to or not.
"I understand!" Violet responded.
Lady June’s gaze stayed fixed on her face for a moment, seemingly satisfied by what she saw, before she turned around to leave the room.
But barely had Lady June moved when Violet opened her mouth to speak, a deep frown already on her face. She was unable to help the question that tumbled out of her mouth, surprised that she hadn’t asked it earlier.
Almost as if part of her already knew the answer—one she didn’t want to hear out loud.
"Did you?" Violet asked before Lady June left the room assigned to her. "Did you actually kill Cain’s parents?"
Lady June swerved around, a cold smile on her face and a glint in her eyes.
"Does it matter? You’re stuck with me!"
Violet didn’t like that response at all. A huge frown settled squarely on her face as she shook her head.
"It does!"
