Chapter 929
Grey hadn’t even scrutinized the contents of the letter when he paused, staring at the Captain repeatedly in sheer disbelief.
"Uh... by who again?"
Amir frowned at the absurdity of the question before pointing emphatically at the stamp embossed on the back of the parchment.
"Don’t you know what that specific stamp represents and exactly who utilizes it?"
Grey turned the letter around to inspect the wax seal with a visibly confused expression.
"Uh... no? I have never bothered myself with the intricacies of politics. All I ever cared about was the pursuit of magic and growing stronger."
Amir facepalmed at the boy’s blatant naivety.
"Are you for real right now?"
Exhaling a weary breath, Amir shook his head once more before clarifying:
"You have been summoned by the Emperor. That seal is reserved exclusively for the Emperor or his direct subordinates—most of whom have unfortunately perished in the previous war, with the exception of Lucien..."
As the Captain mentioned that particular name, his tone dropped into a low, menacing growl.
’Oh yeah. All the Principals of the four different academies, who were in turn the Emperor’s subordinates, lost their lives.
Damn! Just how powerful were the forces the Otherworlders sent? This is crazy.’
Regardless of his inner thoughts, Grey shook his head and looked down at the letter with a curious gaze.
He began reading the script with calm intensity, and once he had finished, he let out an audible groan.
"Seriously?"
"Lemme see, lemme see, lemme see..."
Jesse kept shouting as she jumped up and down, frantically trying to catch a glimpse of the letter.
The Supreme Magus calmly ignored her antics and looked straight at the Captain instead.
Amir shrugged in response.
"I was also perplexed. I mean, why now of all times? Why would the Emperor seek to see you personally?" The Captain thought for several seconds before adding,
"... I am aware that he knows of your existence as a multi-elementalist after the Lunaria Academy’s tournament.
He actually desired to see you then but was far too occupied to arrange a meeting. Now that he is somewhat bedridden after that terrifying battle, he is less busy and could finally make the time to see you."
Grey neatly folded the letter back into its original shape.
"But why, though? I haven’t been here for a long time, so how does he even know I’m back? I’m certain that just as the news of my prowess spread after that tournament, the news of my death traveled just as fast. So how does he know that I’ve returned?"
Amir shrugged, then frowned for a moment before leaning his head back.
A look of deep suspicion entered his eyes as he glared at Grey.
The warrior mage lifted a brow.
"What? Why the stare?"
The Captain pointed an accusing finger at the mage. "Did you perhaps do anything reckless? Did you do anything notable recently?"
Grey lifted a brow in feigned innocence.
"Me? Of course not. I didn’t even cause any pr.... Uh-oh."
Amir sighed, the sound heavy with realization.
"I knew it! You are a trouble maniac. How is it possible that you wouldn’t cause a scene? Now tell me, what did you do this time around?!"
Grey chuckled nervously while rubbing the back of his head.
Turning his head to the side, a solitary trickle of sweat could be seen sliding down his temples.
"I-I... I uh, kind of wiped an entire town because I was pissed."
Amir’s eyes widened in a mixture of shock, dread, and pure horror at the mage’s casual admission.
"You did what?!"
.....
The Captain facepalmed in total exhaustion, shooting daggers with his eyes at the unrepentant mage.
"Why would you do that? What did the inhabitants of that town ever do to you?"
Grey scratched his chin thoughtfully before replying with chilling indifference.
"Their leader murdered Kiten’s town lord. Bale killed Lord Cedric, hence I decided to wipe them all out."
Amir frowned deeply, crossing his arms over his chest. "But why, though?"
Grey’s confusion was evident as his brows cocked upward.
"Why? Well, it was because of Lord Cedric’s consistent kindness toward my family. He didn’t treat me as a complete outsider; even though he had hired a fifteen-year-old boy to rescue his idiotic son and almost denied him his rightful payment, he remained incredibly gracious to me after everything was settled."
He paused, a flicker of warmth momentarily softening his gaze.
"He elevated my family’s social status and always invited us to every ball or party he threw, regardless of our standing. He was almost like a father figure to me, so yes, his murderer needed to be eliminated."
"...."
Amir stared at him with an unreadable expression before he slowly shook his head.
"I didn’t ask for a justification of Bale’s death. I asked you why you wiped the entire town out?
You just slaughtered innocent civilians who knew absolutely nothing about what their lord had done. You could have finished Bale off quietly; why involve the blameless, huh? Why did you do that?"
Grey thought for a moment before heaving a heavy sigh.
"If I hadn’t done that, the cycle would never have ended. Bale would die, and a new lord would inevitably arise who would desire revenge.
The same pattern would repeat itself over and over, so it is better to crush them all before they could even contemplate revolting."
Amir was taken aback by the mage’s cold logic, though he didn’t let the shock show on his face.
He could sense something unsettling deep within the warrior mage’s soul—a darkness of some sort that was beginning to crack open.
If it wasn’t contained soon, Grey would eventually lose himself to it.
Sigh!
"And what do you think that makes you?" Amir questioned pointedly.
Grey blinked, caught off guard by the question. "Huh?"
Amir leveled a finger at the Supreme Magus once again.
"I mean to ask: how does that make you any different from the Otherworlders?"
The query struck Grey unexpectedly, causing him to take half a step backward in genuine confusion.
"What—what do you mean?"
Amir uncrossed his arms and turned his back to the Supreme Magus.
"In the same way the Otherworlders eliminate the innocent, seize their homes, and assert authority; in the same way they crush a bug before it grows too formidable—that is exactly what you just did. Rethink your movements and your actions so you don’t end up wandering down the wrong path."
Tilting his head slightly, he looked back at the mage with a mournful stare.
"... Don’t tread the path of darkness, Grey. Don’t force us to eventually stand on opposite sides."
With a tired exhale, Amir turned around and began walking away, leaving the Supreme Magus standing in stunned disbelief.
"When you are finished here, come outside. A carriage is waiting to take us to the Emperor. I will be accompanying you."
