Loving Madeline

Chapter 383: His Second Proposal

Chapter 383: His Second Proposal

Charlotte’s POV

As we sat together over dinner, the warm lights casting a golden glow across the table, I caught Jack watching me. His gaze wasn’t intense—it was tender, thoughtful, like he was memorizing every detail of my face. And though I tried to focus on the meal in front of me, my stomach fluttered with anticipation.

We were going to have a baby. That alone should have been enough to fill my heart, and yet... a part of me hoped for more. I didn’t dare say it out loud, not even to myself, because it felt selfish, childish, even. But it lingered all the same: the desire for something permanent, something that would bind us together not just as parents, but as partners.

I reminded myself to stay grounded. I was going to be a mother. My strength had to come from within, for the sake of the tiny life growing inside me. And Jack being here, holding my hand through it all, should have been enough.

But then something shifted.

The music faded. The serenade came to its final soft note, and the clinking of cutlery was replaced by a hush that blanketed the entire room. I blinked, confused for a moment—until I saw him.

Jack was no longer seated across from me. He was on one knee. My breath caught in my throat as he reached for my hand, and everything else melted away.

"My love," he began, his voice steady but full of emotion, "Charlotte, having you back in my life feels like a second chance I never thought I’d get. I know this might seem sudden, and maybe I’m selfish for asking—but I don’t want to waste another moment. I want to spend forever with you. Charlotte Divenson... will you be my wife?"

Tears instantly blurred my vision. The world swirled into soft colors around us, and all I could truly see was only him.

"Yes," I whispered, my voice trembling with emotion, the lump in my throat making it hard to speak. But as the overwhelming joy bubbled over, I said it again—louder this time, clearer, with all the love I held in my heart. "Yes, Jack. I want to be your wife... and the mother of all the children we’ve yet to bring into this world."

I reached for his hand, tears slipping freely down my cheeks as I smiled through them. "And you’re not selfish, Jack. You are the most selfless person I’ve ever known. Everything you’ve done tonight... everything you do for me—it’s all love. And I see it. I feel it."

He looked at me like I was his entire world, and in that moment, I knew I had found mine in him.

He slid the ring onto my trembling finger, and I barely had time to admire it before he scooped me into his arms and spun me around. I let out a surprised yelp, followed by a laugh that came from somewhere deep in my chest, the kind I hadn’t felt in so long.

I was his. He was mine. And for the first time in what felt like forever, everything felt beautifully, breathtakingly right.

Suddenly, the soft clinking of glasses and gentle hum of conversation were replaced by the sound of doors opening and footsteps approaching. I turned, confused at first, until my breath hitched in surprise.

The restaurant was no longer just ours.

One by one, familiar faces began to appear. Family. Friends. People I hadn’t seen in months, some even years. I never expected it—never imagined Jack had contacted them all, bringing them together just for us, just for this moment. The realization hit me like a wave of warmth: he had planned everything, down to the last, most beautiful detail.

Tears welled up in my eyes again as each person came forward to offer congratulations. Their smiles, their embraces—it all felt like a dream I didn’t want to wake from.

Then I saw her.

Madeline.

She pushed through the crowd with a wide grin on her face, her eyes glistening with shared joy. "Congratulations, Charlotte!" she said, her voice filled with sincerity as she threw her arms around me. "I’m so happy for you and Jack. You deserve this happiness."

I held her tightly, overwhelmed with gratitude for her presence, her friendship, her unwavering support. And just behind her was Hunter.

My heart swelled as I looked around the room, taking it all in.

Then I felt a strong arm pull me into another embrace. My brother.

He looked at me with eyes full of pride, joy etched into every line of his face. "You did it, little sister," Hunter said, his voice thick with emotion. He extended his hand to Jack, and the two shared a firm, meaningful shake before my brother pulled me into a tight hug, holding me like he never wanted to let go.

In that moment, surrounded by love, laughter, and the people who meant the most to me, I realized just how much Jack had given me, not just a ring or a proposal, but a memory I would treasure for the rest of my life.

"Sweetheart," my mother called gently as she made her way through the crowd toward me.

"Mom..." was all I could manage to say as emotion overtook me. My voice cracked, and tears streamed freely down my face. She didn’t hesitate—she wrapped her arms around me, holding me close, and for a moment, I let myself collapse into the comfort of her embrace.

In her arms, I felt like a child again, but not fragile. Just safe. Loved. Complete.

"I’m so proud of you," she whispered into my hair. "You deserve this happiness, Charlotte."

I clung to her like she was anchoring me in a sea of joy I could hardly contain. My heart felt too full for words.

Around us, the celebration continued. Jack’s family had joined us too, his mom and sister together with his uncle and aunt, cousins, each of them smiling, laughing, congratulating us as if I had always been one of their own. The air was alive with warmth and connection, with memories being made in real time.

I thought the surprises were over, but I was wrong.

Suddenly, the soft background music faded, and a spotlight beamed toward the front of the room. I turned instinctively, blinking in surprise. A stage—when had they set up a stage?

And then I heard it, a voice I recognized from the radio, television, and from my phone playlist. My eyes widened as I took in the sight of a full band stepping into place under the soft glow of string lights. Not just any band. A nationally acclaimed group I had adored for years. I gasped as realization hit me. Jack hadn’t just arranged a dinner or gathered our loved ones.

He had brought music. Magic. Memories. He had thought of everything.

I turned to look at him, stunned. "Jack... you hired them?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.

He just smiled—that soft, boyish smile that melted me every time. "I told you I wanted to give you the kind of proposal you’d never forget."

I covered my mouth, overwhelmed, as the music began to play—our song, the one we used to dance to when the world was still uncertain and everything was still unfolding. But here, now, it was all falling into place.

Then, just as the laughter and music swelled around us, Jack suddenly raised his hand. The band’s melody slowed to a gentle stop, and the chatter in the room gradually faded into a hush of anticipation. Someone from the staff quickly handed him a microphone, and with confident ease, he stepped onto the stage, standing under the soft glow of the lights that framed him like a spotlight made just for this moment.

He looked breathtaking—sharp in his suit, his eyes sparkling with joy, and a kind of pride that could only come from love.

"Good evening, everyone," Jack began, his voice carrying warmth and charisma that immediately drew the attention of the entire room. "First of all, thank you all for being here tonight. I know many of you traveled far, and it means the world to Charlotte and me to be surrounded by the people we love on this unforgettable night."

Applause rippled through the room, and he paused with a smile, waiting for the noise to settle. His eyes found mine in the crowd, and for a moment, he said nothing, just looked at me with that quiet, grounding love that made my heart ache in the best way.

"But there’s more," he continued, this time with a playful glint in his eyes. "I have another reason to celebrate—something even bigger than tonight’s proposal."

The room buzzed with curiosity, a few whispers fluttering through the air.

Jack took a deep breath, then raised his free hand in the air as if sealing the moment in time. "I’m going to be a dad!"

For a heartbeat, there was silence. Then the room erupted.

Cheers, laughter, and joyful gasps exploded around us. Glasses clinked, hands clapped, and someone even shouted, "It’s about time!" People rushed to their feet, clapping and whistling as the news sank in.

Jack laughed, the happiest sound I’d ever heard, and gestured toward me. "And the amazing woman I get to marry is carrying the greatest gift we’ll ever receive. Charlotte, I love you more than words could ever express."

Tears filled my eyes again, but this time, they were joined by uncontrollable laughter. I was completely overwhelmed, blissfully so.

In that moment, under the lights and surrounded by the sound of pure celebration, I realized that my heart had never felt so full.
