Chapter 73
Chapter 73
The morning sun streamed through the windows of Emma’s office, illuminating the organized chaos that had become her life in the days leading up to the gala. Stacks of invitations, guest lists, and event diagrams cluttered her desk, while her phone buzzed incessantly with last-minute updates from the event team. The gala was only days away, and the pressure to ensure its success felt like a tangible weight on her shoulders.
Emma glanced up as Thomas entered the room, a tray of coffee in hand. His easy smile brought a small measure of comfort amid the chaos. “Thought you could use a pick-me-up,” he said, setting the tray down on her desk. “Triple-shot latte, just how you like it.”
She smiled gratefully, taking the cup and inhaling the rich aroma. “You’re a lifesaver, Thomas.”
“Just doing my part,” he said, taking a seat across from her. “How’s everything coming together?”
Emma let out a sigh. “As well as it can, given the circumstances. We’ve secured most of the major donors, but there’s still a lot to finalize. And with Harlow’s threats hanging over our heads, I can’t help but feel like something’s going to go wrong.”
Thomas’s expression darkened. “That’s why we’ve taken every precaution. Security is tight, and I’ll be there the entire evening to make sure nothing gets out of hand. You’ve done an incredible job, Emma. Don’t let him shake your confidence.”
Before Emma could respond, the door opened again, and Alex stepped inside. He carried a folder of documents, his usual confident demeanor softened by a hint of hesitation. “Morning,” he said, his eyes flicking between Emma and Thomas. “I’ve got the finalized schedule for the evening. Thought we could go over it together.”
Emma nodded, gesturing for him to join them. “Perfect timing. We were just talking about the gala.”
Alex took the seat beside her, his presence instantly shifting the energy in the room. While Thomas exuded calm reliability, Alex brought a palpable intensity that made the air feel charged. Emma felt the tension between the two men before either of them spoke.
“I’ve double-checked the list of speakers,” Alex said, handing her the folder. “And I’ve arranged for a photographer to capture key moments during the event. It’ll be great for the foundation’s publicity.”
Thomas nodded, his tone measured. “Good call. I’ve been working with the security team to ensure we’ve covered every angle. We can’t afford any surprises.”
Alex’s jaw tightened slightly. “Security’s important, but so is making sure the donors see the impact of Emma’s work. This gala is about inspiring them to invest in the foundation.”
“And we can’t inspire them if the event is disrupted,” Thomas countered, his voice calm but firm.
Emma held up a hand, cutting off their brewing argument. “Both of you are right. We need to focus on all aspects of the gala—security, logistics, and presentation. This isn’t a competition, and we don’t have time for posturing.”
The men exchanged a brief, tense glance before nodding in agreement. Emma sighed inwardly, wishing they could set aside their differences, at least until after the gala. Their support meant the world to her, but the simmering rivalry between them was an added stress she didn’t need.
The next few days passed in a blur of activity. Emma worked tirelessly with both men to finalize every detail of the event. Thomas coordinated with the security team to review emergency protocols, while Alex handled media outreach and donor relations. Despite their differences, they managed to function as a cohesive unit, each contributing their strengths to ensure the gala’s success.
On the eve of the event, Emma found herself at the venue for a final walk-through. The grand ballroom was a vision of elegance, with crystal chandeliers casting warm light over the polished floors. Tables were draped in pristine white linens, adorned with floral centerpieces that added a touch of vibrant color. A stage had been set up at one end of the room, complete with a podium and screens for multimedia presentations.
As she surveyed the space, Emma felt a surge of pride. This was the culmination of months of hard work—a testament to her determination to make a difference. But her moment of satisfaction was short-lived.
She noticed Thomas and Alex near the stage, deep in conversation. Their body language was tense, their voices low but intense. Emma approached cautiously, catching snippets of their exchange.
“I’m just saying, you’re making this about more than the gala,” Thomas said, his tone restrained but pointed.
“And I’m just saying you should stay in your lane,” Alex shot back, his voice tinged with frustration. “This isn’t your fight.”
Emma stepped between them, her expression stern. “Enough. We’re here to finalize the event, not to hash out personal issues. Whatever this is, leave it outside.”
Both men fell silent, their gazes dropping under her sharp glare. She let out a breath, determined to refocus their energy. “Let’s finish this walkthrough and make sure everything is perfect for tomorrow.”
The trio moved through the venue, checking off items on the event checklist. Emma began to relax as each detail fell into place, her confidence in the gala’s success growing. But her sense of ease shattered when they reached the backstage area.
Emma froze as her eyes landed on the equipment storage. The AV setup—critical for the evening’s presentations—was in shambles. Wires were tangled and frayed, monitors were smashed, and several key components were missing entirely.
“What the…?” Alex muttered, stepping forward to inspect the damage. “This isn’t an accident.”
Thomas crouched beside the wreckage, his expression dark. “This was deliberate. Someone sabotaged the equipment.”
Emma’s heart raced as she tried to process the scene. “Who would do this? And why?”
“We know why,” Alex said grimly. “Harlow. He’s trying to undermine you, make the gala a failure.”
Thomas straightened, his jaw tight. “We need to report this to security and replace the equipment immediately. If we don’t act fast, it’ll be impossible to recover in time.”
Emma nodded, her mind already racing with contingency plans. She refused to let Harlow’s sabotage derail her event. “Thomas, get the security team on this and review the footage from the cameras we installed. Alex, start calling vendors. We need replacements delivered first thing in the morning.”
Both men sprang into action, their earlier animosity forgotten in the face of the crisis. Emma stayed behind, surveying the damage with a sinking feeling in her chest. The sabotage was a stark reminder of the lengths Harlow was willing to go to destroy her foundation.
But as she stood in the wreckage, determination flared within her. She wouldn’t let him win. The gala would go on, and she would prove to everyone—including Harlow—that her cause was worth fighting for.
Late that night, Emma sat alone in her office, reviewing the final guest list and making notes for her speech. Her phone buzzed with a message from Thomas:
Security is reviewing footage now. No signs of forced entry so far, but I’ll keep you updated.
A second message came moments later from Alex:
Found a vendor who can deliver new equipment by 8 a.m. It’ll cost extra, but it’s doable.
Emma exhaled, a mix of relief and gratitude washing over her. Despite their differences, both men had stepped up when it mattered most. She sent quick replies, thanking them for their efforts, then leaned back in her chair, her mind churning with thoughts of the day ahead.
The gala was her chance to make a difference, to show the world what her foundation could achieve. She wouldn’t let Harlow—or anyone else—take that away from her.
As the clock ticked past midnight, Emma’s resolve solidified. No matter what challenges lay ahead, she would face them head-on. For her foundation, for her twins, and for herself.
